Not Long Before Leasing a car makes sense

I have spent several months looking at lease cars as an alternative to Motability Scheme, and for a long time is wasn’t really worth pursuing, recently however things have shifted somewhat towards it being viable, especially for affordable EV such as Renault , Renault 4, Puma gen-e and even Ford capri.

of course you don’t get the coverage that motability provide in their excellent service. But the gap is getting smaller. Octopus are offering cars with full maintenance for cheaper prices. And if you stay away from the 0-60mph in 4 seconds brigade insurance isn’t bad either.

so I did an example of the Renault 4 e-tech Iconic comfort range 52kw over 3 years, with 20k miles a year ( great thing about leasing is you can reduce this figure and pay less. Anyway the results are interesting.

obviously things like insurance depends on the individual,
tyre wear ( I’ve allowed 4 tyres over the lease period Goodyear EV Tyres so a premium brand and premium compound) here is a spreadsheet Spreadsheet showing cost for lease and Motability

      Cheers, all the very best

And 4 or 5 years? I think the benefit of going outside of Motability that one can lease a car longer than 3 years,  thus saving in AP, providing the leasing monthly costs are reasonable.

Yes sorry slip of my sausage fingers lol

              leaseloco or leasing.com

just wanted to illustrate that there are options out there, the convenience of motability can’t be underestimated of course. But with proposed VAT changes and possibly further tightening of the ridiculous rules re luxury cars etc you never know cheers

I took have been looking at Octopus EV vehicle, I am already with Octopus Gp, it’s that high AP which is a killer

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

I’m very surprised at these figures. Given that Motability get full 20% VAT exemption, huge buying power (so massive discounts on top of the VAT exemption), plus block insurance policies, I would expect a lease through Motability to be significantly cheaper. Plus, of course, there’s the issue that these figures are based on 20k miles Pa, which only a very small percentage of Motability drivers need. If the figures were re-worked with the sort of mileage that most Motability drivers actually do, the gap would be even bigger!

of course, you’re absolutely correct I had to put 20k miles for a private lease cos that’s what motability offer let me do the figures with 10k and see what the difference is then

And of course it will soon be the case VAT is added to the Mobility deposit (AP)!

However, the Renault 4, 5 and Nissan Micra, have been discussed before and very expensive in contrast for the scheme. I think it was said the AP + sacrified benefits over 3 years wasn’t a million miles away from the purchase price of these vehicles.

Sign of the times to come unfortunately as Motablity will start to get more expensive, narrowing the gap closer with leasing.

We have been outside the mobility scheme since 2021 – the main reason as detailed some while back is having ‘lost’ our Motability car due to the DWP/Motability 3 months in hospital rule, we have not felt comfortable taking on another 3 lease with them that might not be another 3 year lease!  Our current fully owned vehicle now 4 years old still drives well and is covered by Kia for another 3 years warranty we only do about 10k per annum and I keep looking a leaseloco myself to see what is out there should we look at that route next time and there are some attractive deals.  My initial thoughts are if APs rise and those that have the credit / insurance (no claim) history leave Motability the scheme, it will be left with fewer higher risk customers increasing the the overall costs on those that remain and sending APs even higher as a result.  Ideally Motability would do a ‘ hard reset’ and look at many issues like offering extensions again, 4 or even 5 year agreements, and offering customers sensible market based options to purchase at the end of lease as well in my case the option to pay the lease for periods when DWP would not.

But will a lease company give a lease to someone claiming benefits?

What’s the criteria for a personal lease? Working I’d imagine.

Gentle reminder not everyone who claims PIP is out of work.

With utmost respect a bit of generalisation as well. It’s bad enough that disabled people are labelled as “scroungers”

years ago when people were awarded DLA for life people took out mortgages because the bank or building societies knew the money was always going to be paid.

It is a mugs game leasing unless its Motability first a larger AP then you have insurance, they say GAP insurance VAT  as well and then you have to be careful if there is any light damage as to be fair Motability is quite good on that.On top of all that is Maintenance and tyres which will make Motability look cheaper.
