I see Motability have updated their ”Statement of Responsibilities & Suitability’ which is signed by the dealer/customer/nominated drivers – to be completed upon application. It now incorporates the changes to the scheme from 1st July 26.
Full copy of the new (July 26) Statement of Responsibilities & Suitability here:
The actual costs for travelling excess mileage (incl VAT) are stated within an ‘easy read’ table:

Well spotted @Bigdave
That is horrendous, £3750 for 15k miles
July 4, 2026 at 10:43 am #372203Real difficulty for rural users. Taking our son to college will mean extra charges nearer £6000 over 3 years. Rather defeats the purpose and entitlement of our son and also against the intended purpose of mobility to enable the less fortunate in our society to lead a normal life

July 4, 2026 at 12:22 pm #372211How will they get this payment if you leave at the end of the lease. Are they going to send balliffs to try and collect for them. Or will they just tell the DWP you owe them money and keep receiving your allowance? Which I think would be pretty unlawful.

One would presume that Motability would not permit the debtor to obtain a new scheme vehicle whilst the debtor still owes monies to Motability.
Also, like any business/individual, Motability may take the debtor to the County Court to obtain a judgement in respect of monies owing. Then even the High Court if necessary and bailiffs may be instructed.
Should this still not be paid, then Motability could approach the court to ask for an attachment of earnings order against the debtor, so that payment could be made directly from the DWP/Veterans UK to Motability on the authority of the court.
Whether they would go down this route would probably depend on how much is owed (it is not worth it for £50)!
However, if too many people attempt to avoid paying for excess mileage and simply walk away, it may force Motability’s hand to toughen up their stance.
Having read through some previous Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) judgements, the FOS did endorse Motability disbarring an individual from obtaining a new scheme vehicle whilst outstanding monies were owning to Motability (usually from uninsured damage to a vehicle, or failing to pay Motability ‘back money’ owing following a positive Mandatory Reconsideration or Tribunal result where the customer had kept the vehicle but did not pay for the vehicle during the ‘period of forbearance’ pending the MR/tribunal).
July 4, 2026 at 1:16 pm #372214This works out @ 29 miles a day ….. I do 22 miles round trip for work leaves me 7 miles ..local supermarket 10 miles round trip doc 10 miles if going from woul and back to work 40 miles…..I can’t get bus as seats are upstairs… And it frequently does not run …. Scandal

Don’t forget that apparently Motability are due to make an announcement on the 8th July 26, regarding exceptions and exceptional circumstances and support in which one may be permitted to exceed the mileage limits.
July 4, 2026 at 2:49 pm #372217There exception are going to involve practically a full time job meeting notes of milage to beat and there … justifying you journey life etc they will make it practicaly impossible…… And tbh how do you know how millage will be in years time…. There should be options like car leasing to pay Extra a month for increased mileage…but let’s be honest they’re only interested in max money return
July 4, 2026 at 3:16 pm #372222I’m under no doubt Motability will support those that work, attend frequent or long distant medical appointments by announcing their willingness towards a support package. At this stage we don’t know what that support will look like untill the 8th July. My guess it will be either a reduced amount per mile or totally free.
However, it’s core value was to make “all” journeys accessible, which seems to have now gone by the wayside.

Even though there are to be exceptions to the excess mileage it still introduces another “ will they-won’t they” level of stress, for the person applying for the exception, into what was supposed to be stress free motoring “all journeys accessible” 😏

July 4, 2026 at 8:36 pm #372236@ Big Dave Surely this important information should have a permanent place in yellow, at the top of the information page, along with what comes out on the 8th July 2026.

July 6, 2026 at 2:03 pm #372297Haha, lucky you, I already do nearly 30k a year as work is either 62 miles a day, or 100 depending on site.
Thats before shopping, appts, visiting family.
I fear we may be forced to move to private lease / get a loan to buy a decent second hand car.
July 7, 2026 at 8:05 am #372322I’m semi-retired now but do a lot of charity work in support of the veteran community so do over 15k a year. This would make the scheme pretty much unaffordable to me.
Thankfully, I’m only three months into my current lease!
Current car: Mini Countryman EV in very shiny black!
Previous car: MG HS Exclusive in nice shiny black.

https://www.motability.co.uk/changes/mileageI think it will not stand in court as not only it is a discrimination (why X can travel to hospital for free, but Y who need less frequent appointments- cannot?), but also it will be funded by those who were not permitted to drive over 10,000 miles pa.

Motability VW Touran Family Pack May 2019 (happy customer)July 7, 2026 at 11:33 am #372338That is not going to wash, there is no discrimination, and there are no “permission” issues at all. A yone can drive over 10k miles, it is just they have to pay more.
You sign up to join Motability and the stipulation on the contract is 10k miles/year. If you want to go over that limit you pay the agreed excess .
If you have exceptional circumstances, believe me Motability will put in absolute criteria for additional mileage, and its on the document, employment, education, healthcare.
These 3 exceptional circumstances should see a higher mileage,. What the excess mileage they woll allow will depend on the individuals circumstances.
July 7, 2026 at 11:49 am #372340I genuinely think they will make it so complicated and time consuming……plus extremely stressful People will not do it … People due upgrade will need to find silly money for AP .. Plus pay mileage charge if over 10k .. In my case living in ritual village in Scotland would come to over 7k plus if you have EV the pay per mile charge…..I suspect in three years time masses of people leaving and not paying the charges
July 7, 2026 at 12:41 pm #372341Motability has been discriminating against people such as myself for years. I simply have no mental energy to battle the issue.
Although the scheme was originally established to support disabled motorists, including right-leg amputees, it has never been possible to test drive a Motability vehicle fitted with a left-foot accelerator, certainly not anywhere in the South West or South East of England.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but are some amputees’ not a prime example of someone who could need an Automatic transmission, due to their disability and to address their disability, but not only has to pay an AP, to get a suitable Automatic car, but will now pay VAT on top, of their AP, because they are not deemed to need a recognized adaption.
July 7, 2026 at 2:41 pm #372356Well WPMS used to get extra for an automatic car and am sure that is now stopped. But it is NOT an adaption. It is built at factory and you are not replacing anything that is deemed to be an adaption or on the motability list.
But an automatic is not a recognised adaption. Certainly not in Motability,s eyes so I guess no VAT exemption.
