Heilung is my favourite choice of Music to listen too. Especially through My head phones.

It is not for everyone. However, I find it very relaxing. Takes my mind away from life’s issues. Here is the track Norupo. Head phones on. Here’s my play list https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYpyzisv5Ga6HI23F0RhVLDFz7oq2ZGa0

Heilung is sounds from the northern European iron age and Viking period. We used everything from running water, human bones, reconstructed swords and shields up to ancient frame drums and bronze rings in the songs.
The lyrics contain original texts from rune stones and preserved spear shafts, amulets and other artefacts. Furthermore poems, which either deal with historical events or are translations/ interpretations of the originals.
Every attempt to link the music to modern political or religious points are pointless, since Heilung tries to connect the listener to the time before Christianity and its political offspring’s raped and burned itself into the northern European mentality.
Heilung means healing in German and describes the core of the sound. It is supposed to leave the listener eased and relaxed after a sometimes turbulent musical journey.

Joss, many thanks for this. I’m always looking for new musical forms to explore. Moreover, I’m very interested in the Celts and their artistic impact which was quite amazing. Abstract stuff which would look incredibly modern today, even though thousands of years old. Heilung certainly seem to have a Celtic influence – several Herne the Hunter types in the vids. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a Wicker Man playing a role somewhere! Will enjoy listening to more, in detail.

I’m still listening to a lot of Rock/Garage/grunge/alt etc, and when I want to relax I listen to country. Sorry for bringing the culture straight back down to basics, lol.

I listen through a pair of over ear Audio Technica ATH-M50X which are brilliant Β (imo).

Completely eclectic musical taste here, anything from classical and opera to prog rock and German electronic (hence the forum name!).

Currently listening to a mix of ELO, ELP, Tangerine Dream, Nina Hagen, Earth & Fire (Dutch prog rock) and Mike Oldfield.

    Favourites would have to include,

ELP, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Mike Oldfield, The Nice, Philip Glass, Beethoven, Virginia Astley, Fiona Apple, Rick Wakeman and many more!.

Wow! What a fantastic mixture of choices. Relieved to hear that I am not the only one who can range from Herman’s Hermits to Shostakovich. (Former did some great innovative songs, latter some brilliant jazz suites and film music, The Gadfly being outstanding). Current discoveries include Barbara Dickson’s “Nothing’s Gonna Change my World covers of Beatles’ songs and Schubert’s string quartets, particularly “Death and the Maiden”. Also stumbled across a collection of Cole Porter stuff recorded in 30s and 40s. That guy could really write popular songs!

Can’t believe I forgot to list Kate Bush!Β  Saw her first tour in Sunderland back in 1979 πŸ™‚

Skip forward a mere 35 years and my eldest son was lucky enough to see her “Before the Dawn” show at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2014

It’s such a shame she won’t release the recording of the show on DVD or BluRay.

I suspect the main reason DH chatted me up was because I bore a passing resemblance to Kate Bush (not unintentional, I confess!).Β  I still share her ‘independently minded’ hairstyle.Β  And waistline. πŸ™‚

Currently going through a bit of a Bowie phase at the moment.Β  Especially ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, for some reason.

Maybe we could have a sub-thread:Β  Favourite Song?Β  For me it’s ‘10538 Overture’ by E.L.O.

I discovered Heilung about 12 months ago and joss you are right it’s excellent with headphones.

Like everybody who as posted my range of music tastes vary from black sabbath, Hawkwind, rolling stones a lot of late 60s, blues and even some classic stuff. As I’m writing this I’m listening to sabbra cadabra by black sabbath and gimme Shelter by the stones.

Joss – thanks again for Heilung tip. CD arriving today – haven’t worked out the electronic music storage thing yet. Besides, even if I could get my vinyl on to a computer, it wouldn’t sound the same.

POPS -Country is in no way “basic”. The Trio set by Parton, Ronstadt and Harris is just brilliant. Indeed, anything by Emmylou Harris is worth a listen.

First thing I do is rip CD so I can have it on my pen drive for the car. However, when I built this PC I did not put in an optical drive. No real use for them these days. Save for ripping CD’s lol Doh.

Landy I was never really into heavy metal. More into Deep purple-Led Zeppelin-Moodyblues-Bowie-Genasis-etc etc.

“Optical drive, rip things, pen drive”.Β  Joss, he speaks in tongues. These devices sound very complicated to use. I have technical issues changing a needle on my gramophone!

Joss – Heilung CD now been listened to properly. Their music is certainly powerful; would aggressive be too strong a word? Good therapy, though, especially in our current troubled times. That powerful beat feels like the oars of a longship biting into the water as we power up the Thames towards Westminister. Pass me the war axe, Olaf!

A plug? Why would one need a sink-waste stopper thingey to make one’s sound engines work? I can turn a handle with the best of them! Am planning to install clockwork motor soon – isn’t technology wonderful?

Would send you a picture of planned device but my daguerreotype machine isn’t working.

@joss Mate, had to resurrect this thread in light of recent discovery. You introduced me to Heilung so I must return the favour with Skald. They are a trio of singers, French, curiously, who specialise in songs, chants etc., from Norse beliefs and traditions. Striking music from some amazing voices (and traditional musical backing). They can be found on the free bit of Spotify.

We use to watch the Vikings, think it was on the history channel, then it stopped, think we got some left to catch up on, loved the theme tune at the beginning..

Ajn – agree, Seven Nation Army sounds quite good. Personally prefer the stuff they do in whichever Scandiwegian language they use. Run and Valhalla are really good. It kinda goes better with the ancient strings and those big, big drums. Wish my earbuds could be made to fit properly so I didn’t keep losing the bass. My stereo’s amp and speakers make a perfect job of it but I worry about losing the windows! πŸ”Š
