Mould Spots Or Damp From Water Ingress

I’ve noticed some mould spots on the wall above a bay window. We don’t use the bedroom and only heat if for 1 hour each evening, but we do have a clothes airer in there.

I have noticed the silicone around the UPVC windows has gone a bit mouldy too, windows are 3 years old.

We had new guttering a year ago on the other side of this wall and they lifted and reset some lead flashing. I’m wondering if it’s straight forward mould spots from not ventilating / heating the room or is it water ingress from the lead flashing. Anyone got any ideas?

Damp cloths & no ventilation is a recipe for mould mate

humidity, condensation, poor ventilation or rising damp are the most common causes.

@kezo, yep, I’ve convinced myself it’s mould spots. It high up in the room and it’s the upper floor of the house. If it were water ingress I think it would be more of a solid area rather than spots. Too much clothes drying without opening the window.

You might like to try a dehumidifier? They’re great for drying clothes and getting moisture out of the air.

We had an HPC done recently and we need more ventilation. Which seems to go against the grain for keeping the house warm and draught free.

I hope you’re soon mould free.

+1 for dehumidifier, especially if drying clothes in that room. We use ours all the time.

Have you got your trickle vents open on your windows? That might be enough to stir the air. As soon as you said clothes dryer I knew that’s what it’d be.

Can I offer a bit of advice? If you’ve got the room for one get yourself a heat pump tumble dryer, we got a sub £400 Beko one a few years ago costs us about £30 a month to run with 2 adults 2 teens plus pets so it gets used a lot, every day for sure it’s so cheap to use vs a condenser dryer that it’s more efficient than a clothes horse.

We don’t have trickle vents, at least I don’t think we have. But the windows have a feature that lets you fully lock them with a key whilst open a tiny amount, about half an inch. I’ve started using this.  The clothes on the airer are things that can’t go into the dryer, mostly jumpers and the like.

You can dry stuff in a heat pump dryer you can’t in a condenser as it runs at a much lower temp. It’s made a huge difference for us anyway can dry just about anything now even wool.

If they’re relatively recent windows I’d be very surprised thought it was a legal thing to have trickle vents now, maybe they’re internal ones.
