There are many questions members have about the motability scheme such as :-

      Can I extend my lease?

Can I change my car before my contract is up and if so will it cost me anything?

How much is the GCB and will I get it if I have a few scratches?

What happens if I lose PIP?

If you have any questions about motability, then this is the place to come. We have many knowledgeable members only to willing to give advice. Many of our members have been on the scheme for decades and know virtually everything there is to know about the scheme.

Where do you get the idea that the banks take a profit from Motability Operations, gilders? They don’t. It’s true that they are very generous with our money, but the banks don’t get it.

“The Motability Scheme is operated for Motability on a contract basis by Motability
Operations Limited (the operating arm of Motability Operations Group PLC, which
itself is owned by the major banks: Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC and Royal Bank of
        Scotland).”

I can’t speak for gilders, but I find it very hard to believe the banks that own it would do anything altruistic. Some banks are more ethical than others but the banks in question have not in the past shown themselves to be such.

@Wigwam it depends how you view it.

99.95% of the shareholders are banks, with 0.05% Law Debenture Trust.

They don’t pay themselves dividends, but it is a private company owned by the banks. So when the private company makes a profit and the private company is owned by banks, where has the profits gone?….to the company owned by banks.

Obviously the banks aren’t doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. If they were, with their buying power (being the largest lease company in the UK), the only lease company  protected by inflation (on all vehicles costing your full benefit allowance) and receiving a 20% discount (VAT), the prices to scheme users would be less.

So no, they don’t directly take a profit. But they spend the profit. I don’t have the figures for how much they charge/pay wages to all these various bankers, or how advantageous the donations they make are to themselves….but it’s obviously enough for them to make it worthwhile.

I hope your not suggesting bankers would do any wrongs just to get richer?

Look people, it’s really quite simple:

Motability the charity uses Motability Operations which is a private company owned by the big four banks to provide cars to us.  The profits from the company are reinvested in the company or donated to the charity.  The banks provide the financial security to the scheme and take no money from it.  That’s how the scheme was set up and how it continues to operate.

Waiting for a new car which is showing as “off line” at the factory.

Since I ordered the car the AP has reduced by £500

Do I have to pay the original AP from ordering or do I have to pay the current AP on delivery

I asked the dealer (S.G.Petch Durham) about this 4 days ago but they haven’t bothered replying & the attitude of the dealer is becoming concerning enough to make me want to cancel the order & go somewhere else which I would do anyway if I have to pay the £500 from the original order.

                  Cheers

dcdick, it is a common issue and an easy fix and shouldnt affect your place in the queue as its purely the paperwork between the dealer and motability that needs changing. the dealer simply cancels the original order with motability and puts in a new order 5mins later at the new ap.

probably best to go in and do it face to face, it seems to be the best way to get answers and action.

I’ll go in tomorrow & at the moment I’m of the mind to cancel the order as the dealer is being less than helpful (Nissan Qashqai auto) I’m in  no mad rush to change in the near future

Look people, it’s really quite simple: Motability the charity uses Motability Operations which is a private company owned by the big four banks to provide cars to us. The profits from the company are reinvested in the company or donated to the charity. The banks provide the financial security to the scheme and take no money from it. That’s how the scheme was set up and how it continues to operate.

Quote right, Motability Operations is actually a stand alone organisation, owned by four banks, and it is funded by a variety of sources such as from the resale of vehicles on the scheme, issuing of bonds etc .etc ., and to be absolutely clear, it does not receive any direct funding from the tax payer – monthly payments received from us, ie the disabled , are from our benefits, and it is our choice how we spend these benefits.

The massive plus point in the Government paying benefits direct to Motability, is that it gives Motability certainty of payment and as a result, there are no credit checks or Income assessment , on individuals, thereby allowing us to have much better cars generally than most of us would otherwise get?

It is a fantastic scheme for the disabled, allowing them to contract hire a reliable vehicle ( or mobility scooter) very often at a low or even no advanced payment, in order for the ‘disabled person’ to become/ remain mobile

Any profits made are reinvested in Motability ,and not distributed to shareholders .

It’s bulk buying power allows it to negotiate far better deals with car manufacturers than individuals can get , and the same applies to insurance, servicing, repairs etc

Well, beaten to the punch as it were by the Sales guy who phoned this morning telling me he had adjusted the AP to take account of the price change & would I like to pick up the car on Friday ?

All’s well that ends well then    🙂

@Mike 700 Whilst I agree with most of your points, it’s worth stating that whilst Motability will be the best leasing option for most people, those who are able to buy a car can do so at considerably less cost than leasing through Motability, especially at the lower end of the market. I’m currently changing my daughters Hyundai i20 which we bought new 6 years ago. The total cost of ownership (depreciation, insurance, servicing, tyres, road tax etc) has totalled £1,300 a year and it’s been just as ‘worry free’ as a Motability car. The same car through Motability, even with nil AP, would have cost £3,250 a year. Many Motability customers are accepting 5 year leases at present. That’s a cost of £16,250 in lost benefits with nothing whatsoever to show for it at the end. You can just about make a case for that with cars at the top end of the scheme, given the depreciation and higher running costs, but not for the average car IMHO.

My mum and dad (mum is the one claming) have done that for years as they aren’t bothered about a top of the range or big car anymore and not bothered about changing every 3 years. Last year they chose to rejoin the scheme and had a crossland. Only the other day my dad sat down, did the sums over 5-6yrs and said if we have another car it will be are own. My dad is in his 80s

As a former banker, I was invited and volunteered to become a Director of a Credit Union , and given my experience over many , many years of holding a Lending mandate I was tasked with overseeing lending.

Most members, albeit not all, were in receipt of benefits rather than income from employment, with many receiving Disability benefits, and a high proportion of these had either non existent or poor credit records often through no fault of their own, but nevertheless could not enter into car loans or leasing through regular channels.

This is where Motability stands head and shoulders above the others, in that it offers an easy route to disabled, and often disadvantaged people to a new car, which many would not be able to access without the Motability scheme.

You make a valid point GG but my opinion , for what it is worth, is that even though the Motability scheme may, in some cases be more expensive than others, for the majority of disabled it is a Godsend, and Long May it continue!

                                      i fully expect to receive a call from the place we’ve order our car from to say its ready, {just like when you ask to see a doctor and when you eventually get an appointment, you feel much better}

                                      So anyway, we have a Skoda Kamiq on order, normally we get our new car last week in July, everything is signed for, but it won’t be ready until maybe the 2nd week in September, i pop in to see what’s happening near the end of August, ”oh i was just about to call you, there is some issue with {can’t remember what old flannel he told me} ”  couple more weeks past and i popped into get another update and to let them know i’d need extended insurance, ”oh right we can do that today, i was then told the car ordered hadn’t even been assembled yet, and it would be end sometime in November before week received it, then the final time i was in, it had actually been built and was on its way, that was probably a month ago {at no time have i been contacted by the motability dealer, it always been me who has to pop in to their dealership, then i get the ”oh, i was just about to phone you” patter}

now that was such a long winded tale just to ask, Can i say i don’t want the car and go elsewhere, even though i’ve signed for this agreement?

another smaller issue is the advance payment for our summer time swap to the Kamiq is £300 more than if i ordered one today.

You can cancel the car at anytime prior to putting the PIN in provided by Motability without any problems regardless of signing an agreement. If you do so just be aware that when you place an order elsewhere, you will be at the back of the queue and be prepared for a longer than normal wait again.

As for advance payment being £300 cheaper today is not an issue. If you ask the dealership to put the order through again at the lower advance payment, they will do this for you without loosing your place in the queue or the car you have ordered. This is common practice and is done by many including myself. My advice is do it in person rather than over the phone.

Good advice from kezo but just to add before the possibility of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire most if not all dealers are in a rock or a hard place to mention just another phrase as they have as much information as the manufacturer gives them and that’s almost next to nothing.

All they can do is to apologise on behalf of the manufacture and in the 54 weeks since I ordered and yet to be delivered car I’ve heard from my dealer about 4 times and one of those was the Motability specialist telling me there moving to another job with another dealer probably because of the stress.

So you could get a phone call every week or every 3 months but the end result will be the same.

Yes to chase but contact motability not the dealer. I ordered in July and chased in September (luckily as the order has not been processed). I had an email/ phonecall and device fitted all within 2 weeks of the chase. The device is an Easee One which comes with a charging cable via motability order.

apparently the dealer did not tick the box to say that i wanted a chargepoint !
