I went along to their show today (Friday 11th) and spoke to a few of their staff. Made my feelings known about the changes to the scheme (cars removed because of their badges, mileage reductions, tyres, APs rising, less choices etc) all things they are aware of because according to a call centre supervisor they get told it on a daily basis from users who call in. All this information is collated and passed up the chain but who knows if it’ll make a difference, the staff aren’t happy either cause they know if the scheme keeps shrinking they won’t all be needed so job losses will follow?

So unless things change I’ll be another leaving the scheme next July ☹️

If you go along to the show do please make your feelings known to them, but do it politely as these workers are the monkeys not the organ grinders… for that a message to your MP is required.

As for the show itself, not as busy as I’d have expected, we arrived at 11am and left about 3pm and had plenty of space and time to look around. Lots of cars to look at and test drive as long as you wanted an SUV, don’t remember any 4 door saloons or estates 🤔 Test drove the ID3 as that might be a contender next year… it’d do the job but not my first choice 🤷‍♂️

Push/Pull hand control prices shocked me… 😱 starting about the £1,000 mark and going up for the simplest systems, and if I bought an identical car to what I have now (Ioniq 6) Jeff Gosling won’t take mines off my car and fit them to it so I’ll need to do more research into alternatives.

@Rhodgie FYI if you do decide to leave the scheme, you are allowed to remove and keep any adaptations that your Motability car has and fit them into a private car. Some parts may be specific to each car, but not all.

In our case, we have a person hoist. We got a fitter to instal and wire in a new mounting bracket to our new private car and we left the old one in the Motability car when we returned it, but nothing else. We retained the hoist, extension arm, carry holder and sling, which we now use in our new private car. The cost of getting an engineer to fit the new bracket and wire it in was about the same as the subsidised price that Motability charge for having one fitted to one of their cars.

Needing adaptations was something that we thought might be a problem moving away from Motability, but it turned out to be no problem at all.

@Glos Guy  I know that most hand controls (& any adaptions?) are likely to get removed from a vehicle and binned but did wonder whether they could get stroppy and say “we paid for them, they’re a fitment on the vehicle, they need to be left” but in truth I doubt they care or would notice as long as it can get sent to auction asap? I can always use my portable Lynx hand controls that bolt straight on to the pedals, not as nice to use but I keep them in my wifes car in case I need to drive it.

I know I’ll get the controls I need but the costs are another source of frustration the main stream media ignore when they prattle on about us getting brand new free cars 😡

@Rhodgie Initially I decided that I would just keep the adaptations and say nothing to Motability on the basis that, as you say, they just bin them and don’t re-use them.

During my first couple of calls regarding the early termination they rattled through a list of what you had to return with the car (both keys, handbooks, locking wheel nut etc) and notably didn’t mention adaptations, so I felt safe with my approach.

However, I needn’t have wasted a second wondering if they would be bothered, as when I made their final call to confirm the return date the lady rattled through the list again and added “I see that you paid a fair bit for your adaptations, so presumably you will be keeping those?” 😂

That’s just what I was about to say, surely it is a grey area, as I paid £600 for my hoist (that’s remote keeps failing), albeit, the full price is supposed to to be £2,000. But as usual, we cannot be sure what MB actually pay.

@Rodgie Was this run by MB or was it run by Arnold Clark, as it is in the West of Scotland.

I was never notified by MB of it being held. MB have never held a MB roadshow in the West of Scotland, it is always Arnold Clark, hence all makes are never all present.

@Callmejohn it was Motability who organised this one, only Ingliston and the NEC in May this year.

The Arnold Clark show is usually in April or May but don’t think they had it in 2026 so fingers crossed it’s back for 2027 🤞
