@Big Dave I wish you well in your recovery.

In a general question to anyone who knows. I know if you are buying a car, the end of the month is a good time to look for a deal.

But if the timing is right for reordering a Motability car,

Is the end of a Month and the end of a Quarter, a good time to look for the best Motability discount from a dealer.

It is apparently ‘doing very well’ according to the surgeon. Although as you say, it was a serious saw, hammer and chisel job. Fortunately I was well away with the fairies!

However, the ruddy physiomasochist seems to think I can run a marathon 3 days post-surgery! By god does it hurt when she starts getting me to bend and stretch the leg in seemingly unnatural ways twice per day.

Seriously though, they are being very cautious as it is my only leg. Hence, despite wearing a bionic e-prosthetic as the other (amputated)  leg, in normal circumstances I put more weight on the knee and walk with a slightly twisted gait. So, they are taking things quite slowly. Plus the ketamine is still helping pain wise.

I think I will start mounting an escape bid  later in the coming week though. Although I am being very well looked after and my air conditioned room has been wonderful over the heatwave, there is only so much Sky TV and movies you can watch! The food is excellent though with a wide menu – I haven’t had kippers for breakfast for years!

The physio mentioned me going into the hydrotherapy pool on Tuesday and Wednesday albeit I would rather go to the pub! Hopefully if hydrotherapy goes well, I can go home later in the week.

I too am hoping to walk into the follow up appointment – although I want to get into a tractor first!

As for big discounts on vehicles, past history suggests if you will be happy with a ‘stock’ car you can pick up a good bargain particularly towards the end of a quarter with some discounts exceeding £1k, even upto a couple of thousand off AP’s in recent quarters.

However, the gamble is, will the vehicle you would like become available? Perhaps have a short list of a few vehicles, test driven etc and be ready to pounce.

Certain brands and dealerships seem to do the best offers, quite often Cupra in and around the Midlands, Hyundai and Stellantis models in Yorkshire. MG nearly everywhere! Volvo – forget it!

Whether the changes to the scheme may upset the apple-cart who knows? I do receive e-mails from one particular dealership with their Motability offers. The dealership manager is uncertain how their back office will process the VAT element on discounted vehicles in order to keep legal but no doubt some creative accountancy may come into play.

Wishing you a swift recovery and hoping it goes better for you than it did for me, my ligament surgery on my knee just made me worse sadly. So, I am hoping tahts not the case for you

I am considering getting both knees done at the same time.

What was yourtimelines for going in to hospital having the operation and leaving? I can imagine the physio would be rough, as would the lack of mobility and pain.

Getting one jnee done is going to put ne back out with the imbalance, and compensatory movement.

I saw your post yesterday evening and asked my surgeon about bi-lateral knee replacement as he was about to visit me. He said he will not do both at the same time (bi-lateral) preferring to leave at least 6 months between. Some surgeons will do them bi-laterally but there are greater risks and recovery will be markedly slower and more painful, requiring specialised physio and hydrotherapy.

As for your spinal problem, I also broke my back and neck when I was blown up by the IED as well as losing a leg, thus have a degree of spinal instability, but I  really wouldn’t consider a bi-lateral knee replacement.

As for timelines, for me I first saw the surgeon in April. Then had scans and was measured for the bespoke knee implant.

The implants took circa 3 weeks to be fabricated, and in theory I could have gone into hospital then, but I was away in the US.

So I agreed a date when the Nuffield had availability, the surgeon and his team had a free slots and I was available, so went in for the op on 23rd June. This was however purely private, not NHS (good old Bupa)!

Depending where you live, I believe the NHS waiting list can be up to two years.

I am hopefully going home on Thursday, so one week in hospital.

As for pain, yes even having one knee is painful, albeit the opiate meds keep the worst at bay. Apart for when the physio visits!

I went for hydrotherapy yesterday and will be there again today and tomorrow morning which does seem to help.

My recovery has been a bit slower as I was already a left leg amputee using an e-bionic prosthetic and it was my right knee being replaced. I have had to learn how to walk again putting more weight on the prosthetic as my natural bias is normally the other way round.

As for returning to normality, it will be underarm crutches for now, then arm crutches. I cannot drive for 3 months post-surgery and the surgeon reckons on 4 months absolute minimum before I can climb up into tractors and other agri-mechs. So, I will be relegated to the farms’ offices for the next few months which will drive me insane!

I will be having physio three times per week for the next 8 weeks.

Anything else you wish to know, please ask.
