Was in Morrisons today and saw just about the best offer on beer for the World Cup, 2 cases for £19.66 (see what they’re doing there). I got 18 pack of Carling and an 18 pack of Strongbow. There’s over 20 types of cases to choose from. Don’t bother looking online as the selection is really limited, go instore. Sorry Scottish cousins (I genuinely do have Scottish cousins) I’m not sure if this offer applies in Scotland due to minimum pricing.

@kezo I didn’t know Wales had minimum pricing on alcohol as well.
As well as minimum pricing, there is no multi buy offers up here. That is why we are all tetotall up here, Aye, right. 😉
I did a calculation based on the minimum price for Carling 4% and Strongbow 4.5%, the same alcohol in Scotland would cost £36.64 as opposed to £19.66. I’m all for encouraging healthy options but…
You can’t get a bottle of whisky for less than £18.20 In Scotland. I’m still not convinced that they can produce accurate and justifiable stats. It still affects you if you are a working class moderate drinker.

Just looked on the Asda website, cheapest 700ml bottle of Asda own brand blended whisky is £13.23. Surely they can relax the rules to give a bit of joy for Scotland being in the World Cup.

The price increased from 50p unit to 65p unit on 30th September 2024 in Scotland and will similarly be increased to 65p unit in Wales from October 2026.
Has it worked, I’d say no, just like fag increases never worked or 20mph has never worked, but the devolved governments like to give their spin on things and exercise their rights, yet you still get the homeless drinking from early doors. What they can’t afford in drink, they can in drugs!

kezo, Sorry we can top that up here at 65p per unit of MUP of alcohol.
jojoe That is the problem, how can we define a problem drinker and what alcohol related illness or death’s are attributed purely by alcohol consumption. The last figures’ I saw could not prove that MUP in isolation was making a significant difference.
It is tantamount to saying that we can reduce the amount of road deaths each year, by vastly increasing car tax and road tax, so there would be less cars on the road, due to the working classes not being financially able to afford the running costs.
It would at least make some sort of sense, if it was a tax that went to NHS or alcohol addition bodies, to try and control peoples alcohol intake. But the extra revenue generated, goes directly to the retailer’s, who the Scottish Government claim will pay extra tax on their profit’s
It only works as a deterrent on the working class, whatever their consumption is. It is obviously less of a deterrent for the better off, who could afford to consume more freely but sadly, without any extra support or NHS care coming from the wasted extra revenue being created by Minimum Unit Pricing.
Just paid £12 for 24 300ml bottles of Budweiser at Asda England, Tesco are doing 20 bottles for £10 with a Tesco club card, good value at 50p a bottle. At the Tesco in Welshpool, just inside Wales, they are £13.50.

It was rather a silly idea imo and didn’t really acheive much, but in true Welsh form, the MUP will fall in line with Scotland come October. Not asit bothers me that much, as I go back home once a month and bring it back!
I do buy most spirits from Amazon though, especially round Xmas.
