Are you a little fed up with 8mph for your scooter or ewheelchair? I am.
I see the NEDS zipping around at unlimited speeds on emotorbikes and even ebikes go up to 16mph. Why so slow for scooters?
It has stifled innovation and development, with companies happy to bung a 30amp battery on and claim it will have a range of 200 miles (fishermans tail).
I need more legal speed.

The legal speed is 8mph. Remember they are ment for pavment use, not road use.

It would be nice to get out at a reasonable speed of say upto 16mph like e-bikes.
it’s discrimination I tells you!-

November 16, 2025 at 5:02 pm #317578If you got time on your hands, a bit of understanding, 16mph would be easily achieveable, but I’m not coming to Scotland to put a stage 1 remap on a scooter lol.
First, try removing the speed limiter (easy) and see how much distance is affected and if necessary –
Secondly fit a bigger Ah battery
thirdly change/upgrade the electric motor.
November 17, 2025 at 7:48 am #317585Thanks @kezo but I was really wanting the max speed increased by legislation so that I could bimble along with a friend on their ebike.
No one else a bit frustrated with this low limit?

November 17, 2025 at 1:20 pm #317599Legislation for a mobility scooter is not the same as an e-bike and is 4mph for pavement and 8mph for road use, so no matter whether you make it go 16mph or 40mph is irrelevant, if your using it on the road.
Depending on you scooter make and model? you can change the sprokets by putting a larger one on the front wheel and a smaller on the rear and it will go x3, x5… quicker without messing with any electronics etc.
The other option is a 3 or 4 wheeler e bike, if your wanting to stay legal.
November 17, 2025 at 2:23 pm #317602Far more pressing, for me anyway, would be to make the speed of my stairlift at least double what it currently is! I’ve lost years of my life sitting on that you know 😆🤣🤣
November 18, 2025 at 11:29 am #317619It’s similar with e-bikes, they are restricted to 15.5mph and pedal assist. I have one and it’s just not enough, around 20mph would be perfect. If you ever see an e-bike on the road and the rider isn’t pedalling, you can be certain it’s illegal, unless it has a registration plate and insurance.

I can see that 8mph would be great on a stairlift!

oh definitely!! 😆
Some years back a friend gave all the big talk and said it was very easy to do, he would just change a gear and sorted. Of course when I said yes do it … he went all quiet.
My scooter only does 5 mph which is painful. Love it when I go to Spain where 17 kph seems the order of the day, it’s what it should be here.
November 18, 2025 at 5:13 pm #317643@uncj I agree, 10 or 11mph uplift would be great. I get the feeling the nanny state here wants us shrouded in cotton wool.

January 7, 2026 at 7:39 pm #326802Yesterday the Government Gov.uk website published a consultation on reform to mobility scooter legislation. Comments requested by 31 March 2026.
Question 14 in this document asks for views on increasing the mobility scooter speed limit.
There are also other questions, for example allowing mobility scooters in cycle lanes or allowing 2 person tandem mobility scooters .
There is also a question on using e-cycles as mobility aids. My wife can cycle but not walk. So it would be great if her e-trike qualified for a mobility VAT exemption and if she could legally use it on the pavement or other areas where cycles are currently banned.
Also it would be great if the Class 3 mobility scooter width limit could be increased to at least 1 metre to provide better off-road stability. My wife’s off-road e-trike is 0.985 metres wide with wide tyres and it is much more stable than her previous 0.84 meter wide version with narrower tyres.
January 9, 2026 at 2:56 pm #329998Mrs Joe would love to increase the speed on her stairlift, it goes far too slow for her.
