I wonder how many are considering the benefits of an early termination charge and getting a whole new lease? I also wonder if Motability are geared up to prevent this very thing?
My guess is that anyone terminating this side of July will undergo a significantly stricter process to escape these new rules. I’m waiting to see what April brings to see if there’s value in it for me.

March 26, 2026 at 11:07 am #349360@kezo “Well done Rachael!”
Made me laugh when she said the other day she is going to help the poor with their heating bills because of the Iran war. No she isn’t because the heating season is more or less over for the 2025-6 season so will be paying naught.
March 26, 2026 at 11:08 am #349361Glad I can order mine from 19th July as the excess mileage cost would be crippling for me as I’m doing around 1300 miles per month based on the current mileage on my car and if that’s extrapolated across the 3 year lease I’d be 18000 miles above the new limit costing me over £4.5k, not money I’d be likely to have and I’d wager not many of us would.
I totally understand that changes needed to be made but cutting the mileage allowance in half and then upping the excess miles charge so much seems more than a little excessive. Like others I feel this, coupled with the probable (although as yet, unconfirmed) roll out of Drive Smart to all that this will push people away from the scheme if they can get a car privately.
March 26, 2026 at 11:13 am #349362In reality, most will just carry on as normal despite the changes and adapt.
For the members that are impacted, other avenues prevail.
Change comes to everything, and these are big changes on the scheme.
It would t be so bad, but the current geopolitical crises in the Gulf will hit everyone hard for the next 6 months.
Fuel is going to skyrocket in the next couple of weeks. That will affect everyone.
It is not a happy time.
March 26, 2026 at 11:16 am #349363Currently averaging 13,000 miles a year, so a paltry £1500 extra for going over. Add in VAT on AP and suddenly private leasing or purchase becomes very doable. Could reduce mileage to around 12000 I suppose.
I looked at the Tesla Model Y standard – came out to about £15,900 over 3 years (its a 5 year lease at 12,000 miles a year) excess mileage is 14p inc. VAT. Insurance is £485 a year, call it £1500. Breakdown cover, tyres etc call it £600 over 3 years. So, £18,000 all in for 3 years.
Motability…Same AP, £3500, but add VAT. Sacrificed PIP Mobility, £12480 (actually will be more as it increases every year…) Excess mileage fee £1500 for 6000 miles = £18180. And the spectre of Drive Smart on top – which is reason enough to bin the scheme regardless of cost.
I know, there may be lower AP vehicles, equally there will be lease deals to be had on other cars, this is just a quick comparison.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
March 26, 2026 at 11:18 am #349364I fully expect them to have already reduced their criteria for Early Termination but even if they haven’t you may fall fowl of the new Drive Smart criteria depending on how they interpret ‘ new-to-scheme’
- Anyone who is applying for their first vehicle on the Motability Scheme regardless of the age of their drivers
- Anyone who hasn’t had a lease with us in the last 7 years including anyone who started a lease and didn’t complete it within the same timeframe
The second half of the second point could catch a lot of people out.
Then there is also the fact the right to cancel is not the same as the right to apply again. Something else to make sure of before agreeing to a termination.
March 26, 2026 at 11:40 am #349369Did they even consult anyone on the scheme for feedback to try tailor these proposals
Currently I have a 5008 3.5k ap and has done 14k miles in a year their expecting me to pay for 4k miles extra which tbh I could argue are in relation to court orders to allow me to see my children (shouldn’t even have to do this) but no gaurentee of exceptional circumstances
Yes whilst we can mostly agree the scheme has went under the radar with abuse or whatever the recent press and media campaign has pushed this agenda that folk with bare minimum illnesses get cars which is bs
Even if lets say someone who has a sore toe and is anxious they’ll bump into an ex (not getting at anyone who suffers anything just making a point)
Their not getting a car because of that
Their getting or allowed the car because their assessment backed up with medical evidence
Or they were as we know able to work the pip assessment
I think its the narrative of you can get a car for the silliest of things which is farther from the truth pip declined me numerous times even with evidence it was only when adp came in I finally was looked at for the disabilities I have
I honestly feel the domino effect internally on the scheme and externally with thr 2nd hand market are going to be insane once this is felt in a few years time
And even for those who remove themselves from the scheme but cannot get a decent finance deal due to credit ratings this is honeslty excessive af
Dreading this as I think my cars going to be a economical loss in the next few weeks for a rear end shunt because of repairer vs dealership stalemate and culminating costs
If it were me id be fighting the gov back were we could
Argue against the vat increases or negotiate it as low as possible
15k-16k is more a fairer example i dont beleive the 7k mileage sh** at all
Tires are probably fair but its so easy to get screws in your tires on the uk roads but perhaps this needs clarification further discounted hits for further tires passed the required allowance
Eu doesnt affect me so cannot fairly comment there
The labour goverment are fu***** this country over irregardless of what they inherited they’ve targeted the wrong folk and im not even going to get into the political side of things on were other money is spent or going to which could address this or other issues in the uk
But the last part confuses me the adp side of things
Are they saying us in scotland currently may be exempt at this time past July
I know the recent benefit changes from the dip have this effect with scotland for some reason I.e lower lcwra amounts
They dont tell you this but scotland is exempt with that lower lcwra amount changes for the time being (honestly thinking it’s all being transferred to a scottish dwp ss system)
March 26, 2026 at 11:50 am #349374This table has been shared to Motability professional partners. It’s important to note that when you -pick the car up- is important alongside when you -place the application-. It seems easier to read than the /changes customer web page. One important detail (for me at least) that’s missing is the actual cost of the EU travel admin fee.

I’ve just been in contact with MB and told because I have already placed order it is totally irrelevant if my handover date is before or after 1st July, I will be on current terms for this lease. 20k miles, 8 tyres, euro breakdown etc.
March 26, 2026 at 11:52 am #349375I wonder if Motability are tempted to push the price up of AP this coming cycle then for jumper man come the 1st of July to proudly proclaim how they battled hard for us in the scheme and come along with generally lower AP for that 3 months or so even with the vat?
just a thought
March 26, 2026 at 11:57 am #349377There was a survey that went out to some customers that included a ranch of proposals including the mileage reduction.
As for the 7.5k average, I can believe that, whilst there are plenty who work and travel and stuff I know there are also those that drive a lot less. My mum’s last car did 4.2 k miles total in 3.5 years. I also know of others for whom it’s a weekly trip shopping, occasional trips to the doctors/hospital. 7k a year would be a long way beyond what they do in total.

March 26, 2026 at 11:59 am #349379Only the messenger but that’s not what they are telling dealerships, adaption suppliers etc. That table is from their partners information website, and has been shared by several dealerships on Facebook / social media.
If Motability has agreed something with you that’s different to their new general policy, that’s great to hear. I would however strongly suggest you get your exemption in writing.

I completely agree. The affected date is when you sign that order/application for the car, not the handover date.

I have ASD and thus have difficulty with social and understanding information, written and verbal. I process information in logical blocks, before I reply. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong.
I also have a corneal visual condition, which makes me visually impaired without daytime, or daytime bulbs, among other disabilities/conditions.March 26, 2026 at 12:51 pm #349382Ive overdone things yesterday and now I have a lot of things going on today and brain fog being one of them in particular
Any advice appreciated and just want to be clear
If a new car is ordered prior to July ( my lease is ending Sep ) which of these multiple changes will affect the new lease
Many thanks
March 26, 2026 at 12:51 pm #349383With this announcement it is safe to say my current lease will be my last with the scheme after twenty years. The ever increasing and to be fair excessive in the extreme advance payments for even a relatively basic car to meet my needs plus vat on the advance payment and now the reduction to half the milage allowance with a 25p per mile charge is madness as I currently cover approximately 20000 per year or to put it £7500 in excess charges. The amount of money involved over the course of a three year lease to be allowed a daily milage allowance of approximately 27 miles for myself who lives rural is just not viable this is a very sad and worrying day indeed.
March 26, 2026 at 12:56 pm #349384When we picked our current car up it had a few hundred miles on it (can’t remember the exact amount) we had a certificate from the Skoda factory saying it was chosen for an extended test drive. If this happens again I’d absolutely kick off especially with the 10k mileage allowance. 10k is nothing !

Middle column mate (application submitted before 6th July)
The only change is excess mileage will be 6p inc VAT.
March 26, 2026 at 2:17 pm #349370I do wonder just how many are going to try this? Also I wonder if Motability have changed how they allow early termination to happen and what criteria they’ll set.

March 26, 2026 at 2:39 pm #349393Most people probably obtain any information regarding the scheme from the dealership that’s selling the car. The dealer’s are supposed to ascertain if the vehicle is suitable for you? ie Comfort, access etc. Surely they will need to enquire how much you intend on using the car ? The mileage penalties are a valid reason for the car not to be suitable.
Due to finance’s somebody is unable to pay the AP, for a suitable car from Motability. You apply for a grant to obtain a car. Its fair to say there are a number of people who will not be aware of the mileage change.
Yes I get you should read the contract and its you’re own fault if you don’t.
But there will surely be people returning cars over the allowance and expected to pay possibly £1,000’s of pounds.
The ethos from motability has always been trouble free/ worry free motoring.
March 26, 2026 at 2:42 pm #349394I’m not effected by the mileage allowances as most of my Motability cars have been returned with around about 18K miles on the clock except my 2018 car that I had for 4 years plus due to long delivery time of my 2023 reg car so wonder where we stand on those occasions, are we going to be penalised for manufactures long delivery times.
Another thing how are they going to collect the excess mileage money, every week, month, year and with the numbers being thrown up here it has to be something regular as many would simply not have that sort of money if it was billed on the cars first MOT where the cars mileage is recorded.
March 26, 2026 at 3:11 pm #349396I can reorder my car from 29 June, so I’m just in ‘if’ I choose to go with an EV (which I may do if the AP stays the same on the one I’m considering).
If the AP goes up on the EV I’m looking at, then I will leave the scheme and go back to buying my own car. I’ve had mobility issues for many years, but only decided to join the scheme in 2023 for an easy life. It certainly doesn’t save me money as I would financially be better away from the scheme, but the lure of hassle free motoring got the better of me.
March 26, 2026 at 3:16 pm #349397Another thing how are they going to collect the excess mileage money, every week, month, year and with the numbers being thrown up here it has to be something regular as many would simply not have that sort of money if it was billed on the cars first MOT where the cars mileage is recorded.
Cars will be digitally clocked as they do with private leases. It’s been going on for years. There is an abundance of people with the correct software to clock the inbuilt recorders (ODO, Modules, etc) on new cars leaving no trace.
March 26, 2026 at 3:21 pm #349398Does anyone have any idea how this will affect those of us in Scotland? Any guesses?
Will we be better off or worse off?
March 26, 2026 at 4:24 pm #349400I’m disgusted with this and it seems like a total rip off. Motability pay higher than average salaries with higher than the norm employee benefits and operate from premises that are far too lavish for their operations. At the end of the day they are just a call centre.
This will definitely be my last car on the scheme. I will use my benefits to get the car I want with the mileage I require and with the deals that are around it won’t cost me any more than I’ll be paying on the scheme.
What really gets me is that Motability just rolled over and accepted it knowing it doesn’t affect them. They will still earn the same money, get the same benefits and work from their ridiculous extravagant offices. It’s us that’s paying for it all and they’re laughing in our faces.
March 26, 2026 at 4:28 pm #349401Well said Elliot we are been well and truly shafted with no fight given by motability what so ever.
March 26, 2026 at 4:29 pm #349402Surely 15k a year mileage and a slight increase in advance payments would have been better?
I’d also guess that members on the scheme who have 3 drivers on insurance is relatively low. Could have looked at that first surely?
