Minor bump… BUGGER

Had the new car for two weeks…

somehow managed to give it a little bump against a wall at the local supermarket. Scratches and scuffs, and some body work needs ‘popping’ back into place but only minor cosmetic stuff. Not massively noticeable stuff…

But I am utterly devastated! My lovely new car! I feel like such a complete fool and an idiot.Never put a claim in before and will be ringing the dealership tomorrow morning with my tail in between my legs..

Does anyone have any experience for minor cosmetic things like this, and so soon into a lease? How much will it effect things going forward?

I would also be aware that at the end of your lease,if not repaired, will it affect your good condition bonus of £600.00 at the moment, No idea if it does or not other members may be able to answer this one.

Regarding the good condition bonus – the dealer you return the car to at the end of the lease appraises the condition of the car and sends a report to Motability describing any damage and assessing the overall condition. Motability pay the bonus on the strength of that report.  The assessment is to some extent subjective but minor dings dents and scratches are considered fair wear and tear and are disregarded.  Up to three areas of other damage are allowed (inside or out) for the car to still be assessed as “good”, depending on the seriousness of it.

Motability need a report to attach to the car when it goes for disposal at the end of the lease –  they don’t see the car or even photos of the condition – they rely on the dealer.

Our X1 is going back end of July and earlier this week I took it to the Volvo dealer we are getting the new car from for his appraisal.  There is a dent and paint damage to one door caused when it was parked recently. Had it been earlier in the lease I would have had no hesitancy about getting Motability to arrange to fix it, but at this stage we could live with it if we still would get the bonus.

He appraised the car, pointing out bumper scuffs, marks scratches and minor stone chips and dents which he dismissed as fair wear and tear and decided that despite the damage to the door, he would assess the car as good and we would get the bonus, with the caveat that it’s Motability’s decision. ( our previous car went back with two parking trolley dents but no paint damage and we got the bonus).

So, if anyone is in any doubt about the good condition bonus, don’t assume the worst, ask your dealer.

What hoops did you have to jump through?? My sister is going through the same thing and need to appeal. Any advice??

            Hi Lorraine

Your post came at the end of a page so might not have been read but I think for anyone to help you you might have to clarify “and need to appeal”, need to appeal what?

I was in the same boat as you with my car, except someone hit me while I was parked and away from the car. Told Motability and they said it doesn’t need repairing but I said I’d rather have it done (dint in the rear quarter and major scratch and scuffs). They agreed and I paid the excess of £100. They sent out a body repair company that did it at the house (in the carpark at the back actually). Took him a couple of hours and I swear, you’d never know it was damaged, absolutely amazing work.

I glad I got it done in the end, I like to hand the cars back in good condition. Had I not been nearing the end of the lease though, I might have left it.

                £600? I thought it was only £200?

Yep, been £600 a while now and helps to offset the high AP’s we pay.?

I had no idea. That’s great news. Now all I need to do is make sure nothing happens to the car in the next few weeks before I pick up my new one. 😀

How do I attach a photo. I have some minor damage and would like to know if this would be OK for good condition bonus

do you think this would be ok to pass the wear and tear good condition bonus, the car will be 5 years old on return.

I would say yes, Ian. If there are no other areas of damage (you are allowed up to three) It looks to be paint damage only. Bumper scuffs are generally considered fair wear and tear.

But take it to your dealer. The Motability agent is the one who makes a report and decides if it’s classified as ‘good condition’ when the car is returned, and will give you a definite answer.

If you haven’t reported it to RSA then you should. They won’t want it repaired but it puts it on record.

                                Hi

Just picked up our new mobility car yesterday and our old car a BMW x1 was look at and assessed as good condition, it really wasn’t we had someone key the car 3 weeks before handing it back, the scratch went from the petrol cap right across to the drivers door near the wing mirror.

It had the normal scruff and wear and tear marks on it, but when the dealer was looking at the car he said you didn’t do that did you i said nope it was from a horrible teenager i told off for doing a wheelie on his bike in the middle of the road in the dar with no lights on and i nearly knocked him over (wished i did now lol) they car was keyed the day after outside my house

so he said thats a bad thing to happen, but it wasn’t your fault so you’ll still get your bonus, and i got an email from motability today stating i would get my £600 within 5 working days

You will also see from my photo there is a bump to the lower  bumper. When we made a claim to RPS for the wing mirror which was torn off. I mentioned the scuff to them and the bump. They said they would record both on their system as fair wear and tear.
