MINI Shadow Edition specification is unique to the UK and adds a range of equipment upgrades and darkened styling features.

MINI has launched a new Shadow Edition specification for the Clubman estte and Countryman SUV. Prices start from £26,805 for the Clubman and £28,755 for the Countryman, with both cars receiving some extra standard equipment and blacked-out exterior styling.

The new Shadow Edition trim-level is based on MINI’s Sport specification. Upgrades include 19-inch alloy wheels, black metallic paint, LED headlights and a John Cooper Works styling pack, which adds a larger rear spoiler and more aggressive bumpers.

Both cars also feature unique graphics on their A-panels and bonnets, while the Countryman Shadow Edition gets a set of black roof rails fitted as standard. The same roof rails can also be specced on the Clubman, although they’re an optional extra.

Inside, MINI’s Shadow Edition models get sports seats, anthracite headlining, piano black dashboard trim and a John Cooper Works sports steering wheel apiece. A 5.5-inch digital instrument cluster and 8.8-inch infotainment system is also fitted as standard on both cars.

The specification continues with customisable ambient lighting, rear parking sensors, real time traffic information and MINI branded puddle lighting. MINI also offers a range of option packs, such as the Comfort Pack, which adds automatic air conditioning, heated seats, a front centre armrest and branded floor mats.

MINI’s Navigation Plus Pack adds a host of extra technology, including a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger, improved bluetooth connectivity and some extra connected services such as Amazon Alexa.

Buyers have their choice of two engines. Entry-level Cooper models feature a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol model, with 134bhp and 220Nm of torque. The unit is available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Cooper S models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which develops 176bhp and 280Nm of torque. The unit is hitched to a six-speed manual as standard and gives the Countryman a 0–62mph time of 7.5 seconds. The Clubman manages the same sprint in 7.3 seconds.

Looks especially good with the copper coloured roof and mirrors,

though perhaps a bit too bling-bling even for me.  I think I’ll stick with BRG.

Absolutely stunning!! Love my Clubman Cooper S and would of went for it again had it not been such a heavy car. Mines comes in at over 1500kg – 200kgs overweight imo as you really feel it when chucking it around corners. The Leon FR Sport which i should get next month in comparison is 1255kg

Just worked out a massive over 47 Stone heavier than the Leon.

FR Sport and Xcellence Lux are both on my maybe list.  It depends on how my spine’s holding up.  Also have Mini Countryman Cooper S Classic and Ford Puma X-Line/X-line X if an SUV becomes a requirement.  All AP dependent, of course.  Mini prices jumped Q1 and Ford say Puma prices will now definitely be rising this year.

Still, I’ve got another year to go yet, and who knows what will be available on Motability in 2022.

Countryman Cooper S Classic on list?  The suspension should be soft enough to be bearable. But, there again, so would the standard Cooper drop top – if you want to go into Fantasy world..! C’mon, we all do!

Sorry, Georgie. I do know you have a wheelchair to consider. Just couldn’t resist a convertible gag! Could always drop the top, chuck it in the back and wear a big rain hat.

Seriously, reckon that FR Sport is a good piece of kit. Big-ish, comfy, handles as good as a Golf and with the PHEV stuff, goes quite well – damn site better than the Golfs on scheme now! So long as you keep the battery topped.

I had a Countryman Cooper S as my courtesy car when the Clubbie was in for its 2 year service and absolutely loved it didnt want to give it back. Clubbie is in for an MOT next week and got a courtesy car again though im hoping for the Hatch Cooper S so i can see how fun it is.

Tharg – I used to be a biker, remember?  I’m not afraid of getting wet. 😀

To be honest, the only reason I’m not thundering around on a ‘Mad Mad’ rat trike is because DH wouldn’t let me.

Seriously – I wasn’t even going to paint it purple.  (Some people are No Fun.)

The only problem with the Countryman Cooper S is that they’ve now put the AP up to £999.  Still, like I said, there’s another 12 month to go before I have to choose and prices and vehicle options are bound to have changed a lot by then.

Sorry, Biker Bird… forgot your two-wheeled history.

Mr comments on the FR Sport are also off target: thought you meant the Leon PHEV one which, I now see, has a ridiculous AP. As you say, live in hope that the Cooper S Countryman gets a bit more sensible in 12 months time. The 2.0L 180-ish bhp lump should suit it well. In its 192bhp incarnation it really is a bit much for the 3-door MCS. However, with the LSD turned on it makes for some old-fashioned sports-car driving. i.e. watch every corner and go easy with right foot!

Oh, and back, properly on topic, I wanted to say that I do rather like the Shadow Edition specials. You can almost do them with the standard set of choices on the Mini site. But not that copper-tint hat, which does look rather good. They also look much less fussy and full of macho bumpy bits at the front than other Mini models. Although could still lose the useless bonnet intake scoop with I believe is blanked off in everything but JCWs. Also wish they’d stuck with the “suicide/barn-door from original. Better looking and more useful for those of us with mobility issues. They might switch back – with many other makers now copying the barn-door in crossovers and SUVs.

Well, I got the blocker thingey as well. However, perhaps if you went for something a bit more modern, then DH might not object…
