So it sadly looks like after 6 motability cars i wont be renewing in 3 years time :(, the mileage cap has now changed from 20,000per year to 10,000!!, I do 20,000 a year and thats cutting some journeys out!, they have also increased the excess milage charge by a whopping 20p so its now 25p per mile!
So for me to continue to live normally it would cost me £7,500 extra over a whole lease! 😭
I know its just under 3 years in the future as I only got my car in December but I feel soo lost already!

With NHS fleet salary sacrifice schemes, you can adjust the mileage allowance and the monthly payment increases accordingly. It’s quite flexible depending on how much you actually drive. I think Motability could do something similar. For example, allowing higher mileage in exchange for a higher Advance Payment. That way people who genuinely need to drive more have an option, rather than everyone being on the same limit. It would make the scheme feel a lot more flexible and fair to different circumstances.
Have sat down and considered the impications of these changes and additional costs taking your children c200 miles a day to and from school?
March 28, 2026 at 11:11 am #349560And I don’t think it’s being contentious asking Motability to look closer to home, their staff pay and benefits package is way higher than the industry average. Opportunity to reduce costs which can be passed on to their customers. When you operate as a monopoly like the BBC, you tend to lose sight of these things.
Well said!
March 28, 2026 at 11:17 am #349561Yes, I have thought about it, and I’m aware it’s a lot of mileage.
To be honest, it’s exactly why I’m looking at different options going forward. Next time I may not use Motability and instead look at something like the NHS fleet scheme, which seems to offer more flexibility with mileage.
At the moment though, I’m just trying to work within the options available. I still think it would be helpful if there was some flexibility built into the scheme for people who genuinely need higher mileage.
Even if it meant paying more, having the option would be better than having no option at all and just having to accept a one size fits all limit.
March 28, 2026 at 11:21 am #349563Agreed, or if they are going to stick with 10k, reduce the excess to no more than 10p a mile. This new limit is going to cause issues for a lot of people and limit what they can do. No longer worry free motoring. I do remember when the £2k AP limit was introduced and many people including myself contacted Motability and said it was unfair automatic drivers were penalised. They amended and had a £3k limit for automatics. Given the 10k/25p elements are the most contentious, maybe we might see a slight tweak. Motability Live is at the NEC Birmingham on 15th & 16th May, I hope as many people as possible make their feelings known 😡

Agreed. I have made this exact point on one of the other threads. In fact, what the NHS does is what it seems all other leasing companies and manufacturers finance schemes (PCPs etc) do. The excess mileage penalties (which are never as high as 25p per mile) then only kick in if you exceed your predicted mileage.
It works out a lot cheaper for the customer to pay more for the lease based upon predicted mileage (in our case through a higher AP) than for higher mileage drivers to be saddled with an average mileage lease and then be screwed over at 25p per mile. I’m at a loss as to why Motability haven’t done this and am very glad that even if we were staying with the scheme it wouldn’t affect us, but I’d be livid if it did as it’s very unjust.

In my view, whats easier than emailing the CEO with your feelings.
I have already emailed Andrew Miller making my feelings known, that I took a car for my daughter to get safely to/from school and college this year, that will eat up and exceed the new mileage allowance without taking into account shopping, hospital visits or days out and signed off with, this will be my last lease and that I’m seriously considering terminating my contract before VAT becomes applicable on early terminations.

Based on 190 school days @ circa 200 miles a day, thats circa 38,000 miles a year 114,000 miles over 3 years and a potential hit of £27,750 based on 25p!
You could buy a car for that!

March 30, 2026 at 4:20 pm #350036Hi
I’m wondering if there is a discrimination case. Rural drivers are not being given a fair choice here There doesn’t seem to be a clear argument about what these changes will mean to MB and the rational for penalising a group who need the miles to allow them to live as normal life as possible (the point of the scheme?). The outrageous mileage add on is the stick to get rid of rural higher mileage users and could be argued as discriminatory.
Need a lawyer?
