i have one of those 3 pin chargers, I’ve not noticed but will check later after I’ve used it. I understand that they can get warm but shouldn’t be hot. I’ll test it and let you know.
May 2, 2025 at 9:51 am #305021Yes it is normal but it’s something you need to keep an eye out for.
It also depends if you have anything else using the same circuit and how old your electrics are.
I used the same charger every night for 6 months and was fine but I had new wiring and the plug was in an outhouse but I checked the plug and socket every time.
May 2, 2025 at 9:56 am #305022It should be fine, as its rated at 2.3kW, just make sure the plug stays warm, rather than hot and don’t use an extension lead!
Where did you buy it from, as Masterplug do an older version along with newer version?

May 2, 2025 at 5:45 pm #305035Heat is a big issue with these chargers. I used them with my previous car and to fully charge was about 14 hours from desperate, after which time the plug, lead and box were all quite hot. I had high quality, high rated extension leads, including externally rated socket at the end and still managed to melt a socket or two over 4 years. You need to make sure the connection is good, a loose plug will cause even more heat and will prove dangerous over an extended period.
As an additional thing to be aware of, many holiday let owners are now prohibiting these chargers in their properties on the excuse of safety. If you use one and they over heat you could find yourself in some severe trouble. There’s also a theory common amongst EV communities that this ban is partly to do with the impact that can have on the electricity bill, I’ve seen people charging 3 or 4 times in a fortnight stay, at 70ish kWh that’s quite some demand above what you’d expect from a normal holiday let use.

May 2, 2025 at 5:56 pm #305036I’ve just been using it and checked, as already mentioned, the plug is slightly warm but not hot. I’ve been using one for months with no issues.

You should be fine, as the car won’t be able to pull more than 10A from the granny charger.
Also try to limit useage to 8hrs or so.
May 3, 2025 at 7:26 pm #305069The granny charger which came with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV got only slightly warm in the summer nothing of concern, the granny charger supplied with the Suzuki Across is still unused in the boot.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
May 6, 2025 at 12:16 pm #305186Hello, we have been using a Masterplug 15 m three-pin cable pretty much exclusively for charging our PHEV for about 18 months now. The first cable died, but within warranty and was replaced for free by Halfords. I think water got into it, so I put an upturned bucket over the box bit now if it’s wet. It did get quite warm, so now we’re careful to fully uncoil that, and the heavy-duty extension cable we use, and it’s much better.
July 29, 2025 at 9:39 am #310569I have had two of these chargers and both chargers have burnt the sockets. I am taking my second one back tomorrow as the plug gets so hot and the plug smells electrical burnt. I have had to replace 3 3 pin sockets two outdoor and one indoor.
I am also getting on to masterplug in the morning to report this to them.
July 29, 2025 at 11:04 am #310593Using a coiled extension lead for something that draws a heavy current is asking for trouble. Usually the appliance goes on fire. That is user error
If its blowing your sockets, its your electrics at fault and probably not the charger.
