JavertHi – I am waiting for a Motability installation of EV charger. I saw on a video that it’s recommended to upgrade your main cutout fuse from 60A to 100A – is this something that BP Pulse or whoever will arrange for us or should I proactively address that?

I don’t know particularly in regards to Motability chargers, but i can say that our installation (we went private) sorted everything out, including a new fuse box.
@DumfriesDik should know, i think he had something done? If i recall correctly, you have to pay the extra work done and can claim it back then, but i might’ve gotten that wrong. He is in the very process right now though, so he should know.Prior: SEAT Ateca Xcellence Lux 1.5 TSI DSG MY19, VW Golf GTE PHEV DSG MY23

Ian priceSame for us. Went private. But before doing so upgraded main fuse from 60 to 80 amp for free by UK power network. A 100 amp fuse would cost extra as there is new wiring required. As an added safety we had a load limiter installed, which regulates the power going to your car,so the fuse does not blow. From what I have read, unless you have a lot running. Power shower. Oven. Hob. Etc. You will be ok with an 80 amp fuse.

DumfriesDikI have been refunded everything I have paid for.
I was due a BP Pulse charger. However, I was offered an Ohme charger so I have switched horses.
I needed an isolation switch installed and as mentioned, I was refunded the cost (£160).
Ohme are coming out to survey next week.
At the moment I am not out of pocket.February 14, 2022 at 1:33 am #177271
MR Mark WinterHi
Had our BP Pulse charger installed a few weeks ago. No major issues other than finding out our electric supply is “looped”. At first Western Power Distribution following the survey “just me taking photos” said we could not have a charger installed until we were un looped. Apparently we get our electric from the mains under the road and one of our neighbours gets there’s from the 100 amp main fuse holder in our meter cupboard. Not sure which one as they both have a single mains cable entering there meter cupboard, we have two!
However electrician arrived and fitted our charger.
Was surprised as had been told only terraced or semi detached house were ever looped and then in the 50s 60s and 70s. Ours is a detached built in the mid 90s!

February 14, 2022 at 8:52 am #177281I did not wait for BP – I contacted the DNO and had them upgrade the fuse from 60a to 100a after having our sparky upgrade the tails (the DNO will not upgrade the fuse unless the tails are 25mm & they do not do the tails, that is after the meter, so your responsibility).
The upgrade was free, as they did it as part of my unlooping, but some DNO’s charge for it.
We never got any further than BP saying they were working on a quote – that was after 5 months. I gave up in the end and installed a unit at my own cost, life’s too short to deal with incompetent companies. Motability were not interested in the situation, although they did seem to change that a bit after we had ours done and are now using Ohme which has to be better than the BP “experience”.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

Javert@Dumfriesdik – Kona – expected delivery August. There is no rush indeed although I am not sure if they are trying to do it quick because of this grant which is expiring? They sent us a form to fill in and we had to upload some photos and my wife then got a text that they will be in touch “within 5 working days” – anyway I guess we will see as it sounds like others have had bad experience with BP Pulse. However they are still trying to use BP Pulse with us.
There is no sign that we are looped on my side (only one cable) but I guess I won’t know for sure until they check with the power company?
Dumb question – is there any technical reason that I must upgrade the main cutout fuse or get unlooped before the charger is fitted – I assume this could also be done after the charger is fitted, especially if the charger won’t actually be used for some time after?

It’s most likely insurance related, or legal regulations they have to adhere to.
