Long Term thread – Options for my next car

Here’s the starting point for me deciding what my next car will be.  I’ve some set criteria:

Electric – if you don’t like them, good for you but this will be my 4th, I’m not going back now.

Comfortable seats – Both myself and my wife have spinal issues, sitting on the wrong chairs can be incredibly painful and rather quickly too.  I’d hate to have a car that I can only drive locally because after half an hour I can’t actually get out of the damn thing.  Heating and Cooling seats would be good, heated is essential though, it’s amazing how that can help the back.

Electric tailgate – again with the back issues, stretching up to pull a boot door down, especially if the gas struts put up some resistance, is a problem.

HUD – I’ve gotten used to it now, I can’t remember the last time I looked at the dash to see how fast I’m going.

Wireless Apple Carplay –  Pretty much all I listen to is on the phone, it’s either music or audio books but I rarely listen to the radio as it’s usually crap down here.

As you can imagine the current selection is rather lengthy.  I’ve barely began whittling them down so here we go, in no particular order:

      Ioniq 5

      Enyaq

      Elroq

Capri (I know but it’s not a bad car)

      Grandland

      Scenic

      Mach E

      Ariya

Budget depends on just how much I can save, which means it won’t be excessive, so that will drop a lot off the list.  Currently to replace what I have, thanks to the model changes, would cost something around £6.5k, which isn’t happening.  If I could save that in 3 years, I’d be much richer than I am in reality.

Front runners based on budget and equipment are either of the Skodas and the Scenic at the moment.  I don’t care about the Elroq dropping off the scheme next quarter, it’ll be back before it matters to me. I’m still hoping the EV3 comes onto scheme and sticks around, that’d be a nice option, although I expect KIA pricing will put it higher than the Fords.

I’ve learnt some lessons from my last search, so the infamous spreadsheet is being updated each quarter, with a new tab holding the new quarter’s pricing and leaving previous quarters for reference.  I’m hoping this may provide some interesting insights once the car is chosen, looking at where prices and models have come/gone.

I’ll update as I start to whittle out some options and as new quarters add a new perspective on the search.  If there’s anything anyone wishes to add, I’m always open to opinions.

2 cars driven and we have a clear winner!!!

MGS6 was a very nice drive.  We could turn off every annoying bing and the car can be set with a customised button to take you straight there or you can put a setting to custom and they’re all gone each time you start up.  Boot space was adequate.  Seats could be adjusted but the lumbar support didn’t quite go far enough back.  The faux suede material makes turning in the seat quite tough.  With 1 pedal driving set it was a very quiet and comfortable ride.  The space between front and back seats was vast, our daughter couldn’t touch the front seats with her hands and could cheerfully stretch out.  The seat material did result in sweaty backs, which wasn’t great.  Overall, it’s not a bad car but not for us.

EV5 was next and they gave us the GT Line S, so was over specced.  Seats were much better for getting in/out with the faux leather material.  Because we were in the top model, we needed to cover up the sunroof but that’s a little thing.  Again going through settings to shut up all the nagging, although you need a couple of pages to put a stop to everything (the beep every time the speed limit changed was really annoying rather quickly).

Driving was smooth although we felt much more aware of the size despite both cars being generally of similar dimensions.  The seats were as comfortable as the Ioniq 5 and cooling really helped after the MG.  The KIA was much smoother over bumps, which means it’s a winner with the state of our roads.  Generally it was like driving our car but on stilts as we were sat so much higher.

So, having gone through so many cars, there’s only 1 that’s suitable.

We had a noisy look inside the GT Line EV5 very very nice but far beyond our budget

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

Yes, price would be something of an issue.

We went for the Škoda Enyaq 85 £995, I hope we have made the right decision after the bulletproof Suzuki Across.

1 month before ordering and KIA/Motability have thoroughly put a spanner in the works.  Having decided that the EV5 was our best option, it’s GONE!!

The biggest KIA on offer is the EV2, which is simply too small.

There’s just no excitement on a new quarter anywhere no more!

What are your plans now now?

The Atto3 Evo 800v has joined in lower trim, if that any use but no suitable MG’s unless your willing to go PHEV, which you don’t want.

I’m going to have to look at the VW ID4/5 just to see if the newer versions have dramatically improved over the last ones I sat in.  The BYD had issues getting in/out, I’m going to have to look at that again.

The MG S6 has seat material that I just stick to, so when I swivel to get in/out my clothes stay where they were, which isn’t exactly comfortable.

Just to add to the fun, the Motability site seems to have decided I’m a security risk and have blocked my IP.

I might just go back to bed and see if I can wake up to a better result….

Looking at the models offered, the VWs are out.  58kWh just isn’t enough on a car that size.

                      New potential option:

Assuming that the EV5 may well return or something better than the current offerings, at least, I could speak to the grants team and extend until a car that’s entirely suitable without being insanely expensive comes on Scheme.

Thus I’d be watching with intent ready to go should the right car become available any time this side of the next election.

BYD’s Seal U might just be big enough and I could cheerfully do all electric for the majority of my current driving and then the expensive option (petrol) for longer runs.  The seats were just about comfortable enough.  I’m not sure if there’s better plug ins on Scheme as I’ve not looked at them closely enough and there’s so much difference between what they can do electric only and what sort of regen they could employ.  Ideally the closer to one pedal the better but any kind of slowing notably would be enough at a push.

It’s pretty bleak to say the least.

Friends are telling me to just get another Enyaq as at least I fit into it OK, apart from the silly £1999 for the bottom trim I’m reading quite a few horror stories about the new Google OS and 6.x software in the MY27 models, looks like being back at the original launch problems again.  No support from dealers as they simply can’t do anything about it and have to wait days or weeks for Skoda to offer possible fixes.

I can wait until Q1 as my lease runs until Jan 12th but I don’t think anything will improve.  Only hope is to either wait and see if the C-HR+ returns at a sensible price (or lease one from Toyota) or settle for something that will just get me from A to B, both the Ciroen eC3 Aircross and Suzuki eVitara are under £1000 but neither get very good reviews.  At least the Atto3 Evo is on, at £2000 it may be worth a look.

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

It’s the Design spec but it’s still pretty decent.  It’s only missing a sunroof and heated rear seats from the Excellence, which isn’t a vast loss.

If it’s big enough for you, it’s a properly decent car, well worth the money when you look at what else is available for that money.

Indeed, I’m going to try and get out tomorrow and have a look at one.  The same dealership also does Hyundai so I may see if I can get into a Kona N Line as well, my friend had a used one for a very short time (rear brakes and AC were both faulty!) and I managed to get into the passenger side!.

                                Waste of a morning! 🙁

Suzuki Durham, nowhere to park, couldn’t even get into the car park.  Ended up 200+m on a main road with double yellows, painful walk there and back (none of the good painkillers due to driving!)

Managed to get into an eVitara, not good, seats uncomfortable, cabin seems very cramped and poor quality, centre console (same as C-HR+) is about 5-7cm higher than the Enyaq so bangs right into my left knee.

BYD/Hyundai Durham, same problem with parking, it’s on an industrial estate so parking on the main road not good, lots of vans, cars and a few car transporters all trying to up and down the road.

BYD Atto3 EVO, No idea !!!  Rang them this morning to check they had one in stock, got there to be told it was sold earlier this week! 🙁

Hyundai Kona, same dealer but further down the road so more walking!, no good, could just squeeze down enough to start to get in but right shoulder hitting top of door opening so couldn’t get sat in it.

Skoda Durham, just up the road from BYD/Hyundai, no problem parking.  Couldn’t see an Enyaq in SEL trim but did find an Elroq so identical cabin.  Seats OK, bit wider than my current Sportline seats and otherwise) apart from a lack of toys) same as my current 85X.  Delivery is currently 3 months.

So at the moment Enyaq or leasing a C-HR+ privately looks to be the options, nearest BYD dealer is in Newcastle, I may persuade my friend to have a run through next Weds on his afternoon off and try and see the ATTO 3 if they have one.

@Phaedra that sucks.  At least you have an affordable car that you like, the Enyaq is a decent car and you’re fully aware of any downsides.

Indeed, bit worried about the new 6.xx OS, seen quite a few reports now of some serious issues with either fixes taking weeks or not at all.  At least the Elroq I sat in had Pirelli tyres so there may be some hope!  The Bridgestone’s only lasted about 13,000 on mine (well 3 of them did!).

I’ll give it a month or two before deciding which way to go, the C-HR+ might re-appear! and hopefully I’ll have had a look at an Atto 3 by then 🙂

Ok knowledgeable people  I need some super quick education.  PHEVs.

There appears to be a few capable of doing 90% of my driving on pure electric, the rest will just turn the noise on.  That said, I’ve paid absolutely no notice of the PHEV market, what’s good, bad, well worth avoiding or that I should go look at immediately.   I’m looking at some and thinking they’re bigger than any EV I’ve looked at but are they actually capable of doing my local runs on electric or do I look at my electric plan B, which is the MGS6?

There’s still a part of me thinking that simply extending until the moment I see the EV5 on Scheme and then having everything in place to run/drive rapidly to the dealership and place and order, which runs the real risk of me still being in the I5 this time next year and looking at the new APs through tears.  I’ve had ages to look at all this and was focused on the ideal fuel for the way forward, now I’ve got this month to find a new plan or and adaptation of the old one.

At the moment, I’ve been pointed at the Starray a few times now and it’s Ultra model with 80 claimed miles (even if that’s only 50 it’ll do locally) but fear that’s going to suffer the size/comfort issues we found with the EX5.  Failing that, there’s the bigger VWs/Skoda which have boots that’ll give me no issues but what exactly will I get range wise from the little battery?  There’s the larger Cupras, but they come with the same questions.  The Seal U is nearly big enough (take the false floor out and I can put the walker vertically and have space for everything else but that creates a lip) however, every time I say BYD everyone points me at the Geely, which I think is nearer Sealion 5 size.

So, in a word – HELP!!!

I wouldnt assume the EV5 is coming back to the scheme. Multiple cars have went and with the way the schemes going I would assume its more than likely less cars are more likely. I would just plan with what’s available.

I’m thinking the same.  If I struggle I’ve got to January before I must either extend or place an order, so I could wait and see what Q1/27 brings but after the last 2 quarters you’d be very brave taking that chance.  Hence me looking at PHEVs as a better solution to spending thousands on a car that could well become unsuitable in 18 months to 2 years.

Cost will work out OK and will own the car. So
limited choice  on the scheme now, and AP have gone crazy.

                                              Update:

An eventful Saturday afternoon.  Ruled out the Geely Starray as it has the same issues as the EX5.

The facelift Ariya should be back on the Scheme by the end of next week. The local dealership had a notification that they need to order a demonstrator super quick as it was released for retail orders as of 1st Oct., Motability orders will be open within the next few days once the details have been finalised between Nissan and Motability.

The Jaecoo 7 SHS-P was a hit with both my daughter (who is fussy as hell) and me.  Unfortunately, at £6,099 it’s not cheap.

The BYD Atto 3 Evo is comfortable, although she who complains found an issue with the rear headrest.  The boot could be made to work with the help of some bungee cords.  At £1999 it’s by far the best option I’ve been left with.

Top car that JakeWho or should I say best selling😂 If you liked that or rather it was a substitute to what you really want, the rest of the Chery line up Omoda/Tiggo might be cheaper.

As a second best option to an EV, the MG HS might be worth a look, especially as there are some decent offers om MG in the offers thread, plus it has a longer range 70 miles.

Surely to God, an headrest can’t prevent you having a car that could suit you for the next 3yrs surely? There are thousands of used/aftermarket headrests available , with one that will suit or tell her to catch the bus, as that often works😂

Its just a total waste of hard cash, to throw away and waste £4k  in he current climate, just for a fecking headrest mate.

                                                  Don’t worry.

There was a funny moment where a salesman was really working the problem having been told last time how an autistic, hypersensitive teenager can screw up an otherwise ideal car.

All issues except the headrest were positive, she liked the materials, seats and light positions.  In the end we took away said headrest and all was good. We might look for a more normally shaped one that fits and she can have that, that can’t be too hard.

Our nearest Tiggo dealership is Exeter, 110 miles away. That’s a hard pass.  I’m hoping that a test drive of the Atto proves successful and all is good with an EV.

I think Peugeot use that style of headrest in some of their cars and to a degree understand where your daughter is coming from, but its a rather miner gripe and if I remember when looking at the AWD varient, the middle headrest might just be a solution.

I’m sure you’d be happier in an EV anyway.

Yes definitely happier in an EV.  The centre headrest is narrower than the two either side, we looked at that.  I’m pretty sure we can find something but even just taking it out is better than keeping it there and hearing all about it.
