Mrs Joe has a powered wheelchair which she leaves in the car boot. It has Lithium Ion batteries, is it okay to leave them in the car when it gets really cold, I’m thinking minus 3c sort of temperatures.
I brought one in this morning to charge after being in the car last night, when I first plugged it in the charger light was green indicating it was charged, after being left plugged in for a couple of minutes it turned blue which meant it was charging but not fully charged.

I’ve been using Lithium Li-on batteries in various scooters for the past 6 to 7 years and my scooter is always left in the car, hot or cold, outside with the car on a hard standing and never had any problems with the batteries.
In cold weather I’ve found the battery meter on the scooter shows a low voltage because the battery is cold but within a few minutes of getting under way I find it soon perks up to show almost but not quiet, full battery level, much the same that I used to get with GEL batteries of years gone by.
My Lithium battery in my current scooter is getting on to be 7 years old now and has only lost about 10% of its original capacity.

November 20, 2025 at 3:08 pm #317677The cold shouldn’t be to detrimental to lithium with day to day use, similarly to the car won’t travel as far if battery is cold. However, storing for longer periods without use, its recommended to charge to the % the chair manufacturer recommends and preferably storing the battery somewhere it won’t be susceptible to freezing over a prolonged periods.

It’s used a couple of times a week. Was just worried after the cold weather last night and the battery chargers saying it was charged when I first plugged it in.

It uses 1 battery but also has a compartment that carries the spare battery. Think I’ll bring the spare in, don’t want to forget to put a battery in.

I was going to add, if you’ve a spare take that in, then you’ve a warm back up. I’m not exactly sure I’d trust myself with remembering to pick up a battery as we’re headed out in a rush, so it’s probable best to keep it in the car.
It’s worth remembering that all these evil BEVs have Lithium batteries and do well enough, even if a little preconditioning is sometimes required to get the best out of them. Similarly, with the battery remaining in the car whilst you travel, assuming the boot warms up a little slower than the cabin, it’ll still have some mild form of preconditioning before it’s needed.

November 21, 2025 at 12:09 am #317757Exactly Mark. I’d also put money on if you charged your car to full overnight and plug it back in tomorrow on a dumb charge, it would take a very small percentage of charge due to minus temperatures, which is typical of lithium ion, as it slows the chemical reaction and of much the same reason, a BEV looses range when its cold.
Edit: And when you apply a charge current it excites the energy in the battery again, much in the same way, we need a warm drink, a bowl of oats etc when we wake up to restore the energy flow.
