Lease end date error – I’m an idiot

We extended the lease on our current car becaue there was nothing suitable. We need an SUV with enough rear door clearance for a wheelchair hoist. Plus power tailgate and driver’s seat. This dramatically reduces the choices.

I had it in my head that I needed to be ordering something by the end of next year.

      WRONG!

I just checked my Motability account to see that the extended lease expire 14 March next year. I’m hoping the September or December pricelists bring some more choices, ‘cos currently I think I’m stuck with either an MG HS or another Kuga – although I admit the new graphite edition Kuga looks fab.

Gonna take a look at the Renault Austral, but it may be a bit small and seems awfully dark inside.

It sounds as though your lease was extended by 1 year and not 2? As we know, with a lease extension you can order a new car at any time within the extension period – even the next week – so it is never advisable to only extend for 1 year, always do it for 2 years, especially as Motability don’t allow 1 year extensions to be further extended. If it was your understanding that you had requested a 2 year extension, I would call them and express surprise that you’ve just noticed that the lease had only been extended by a year and see if they will make an exception, for the reasons that you have stated (poor choice, lack of suitable cars etc). They are awash with money and there is no justifiable reason why they should leave you worrying about this. Good luck.

It is my fault, sadly. Current lease started 2019. So 5yrs is 2024. Numbers have become slippery as I have aged.

Well if next year is 5 years then you’ve done nothing wrong, as that’s the maximum lease period allowed. If your financial position doesn’t allow you to leave the scheme and buy something more suitable, is it worth seeing if there’s a car with the one thing that cannot be worked around (rear door clearance) and then if it doesn’t have a power tailgate or power seat as standard see if Motability will pay for adaptations?

As GG has said – you are not tied to a lease extension and can change at any time.

Dante2 has had the Austral for 3 weeks and put up a review. see “Renault Austral update”

Thanks. I understand I can order at any time during the extension. It’s just I’d been hoping for more choices. I was gutted when the Qashai Tekna epower went off, then the Tuscon Ultimate full hybrid. Sadly, the Sportage with a power tailgate is not on the scheme.

I will go look at that Austral update.

PS. The part I left out is that I thought I had longer to save the AP. So I can’t order right away, in case delivery is in 3 months – I’m gonna need at least 4-5 months to get the AP together.

I wouldn’t worry about that, as the dealer could hold the car for you for a month or two if it came in quickly. Our BMW X1 arrived at the dealership in July and the dealer said that they were happy to hold it until September if we wanted the new reg. In our case, we were happy to take immediate delivery as I’d had enough of the VW Tiguan that we had at the time, but if you explain to the dealer that you won’t have the full AP until a certain month they can either order in the knowledge that’s the case or, if not, they can process the order on the Motability system but delay ordering the car from the manufacturer for a couple of months. Many do this anyway and don’t tell you (if they don’t have immediately available build allocations) and it doesn’t matter if the car disappears off the scheme as the car has already been ordered in Motability’s eyes.

If your in the Stoffordshire/Cheshire area I believe Holdcroft group allow ou to pay over 2 or 3 installments after collecting the car. Don’t forget the £750 new car payment and any GCB.

However do what you feel comfortable with, afterall you know your finances better than anyone!
