Luxury cars removed from Motability scheme ahead of budget
Luxury cars will no longer be available for Motabiltiy recipients, it has been announced, with the government saying more money will also go to British manufacturers under changes.
The announcement comes just days ahead of the budget, although it does not appear that the announcement will have any change to government finances.

Surely this action will have major implications for the manufacturers (dealers) affected.
November 25, 2025 at 1:04 pm #317957i agree with @jojo22 all this is just the softening up barrage to see where the weak points in their arguments are and what mud sticks and has support from voters. one by one everything that has been “leaked” to or via the press has been back tracked as speculation and where its gained support its been doubled down on.
not this year but next stand by for amendments in qualification and even levels of support. i applied for an increase in my war pension as everythings worse than it was, we are up to 18 months and counting i wonder why. i reckon rules will change and they will apply to current and future applicants.
be careful what you wish for !
November 25, 2025 at 1:04 pm #317958Motability buy 300 000 vehicles a year, if 50% British built is achieved, 150 000 vehicles will be split between the Nissan Juke, Nissan Qashqai, the new Nissan Leaf (good car), the Mini (small one) and the Toyota Corolla. The JLR cars will not be joining the Scheme. The Nissan Qashqai is the 3rd best selling car in the UK, 35k sold to date this year. From a business perspective it seems a little odd to show your hand in such an overt way, surely when it comes to pricing negotiations with these models the power is with the seller.
That’s a very good point! Also, all of those cars are far too small for our needs!
November 25, 2025 at 1:06 pm #317959I love my BMW The last of the breed. After my 3 years is up I will probably leave Motability and do as @Glos Guy plans to do. I love the BMW badge ( that must make me a “badge bunni”) I love the build quality, the level of comfort and quality of the driving experience.

Indeed. I know the Motability specialist at our local BMW dealer very well. I’ll be contacting them soon for a chat. I’m sure they will be redeployed back to the normal sales team but others may not be so lucky.

I thought of you as soon as I read about this @joss. Well done for getting your X2 when you did. As for the anti BMW comments, they are just laughable and demonstrate a huge level of ignorance on many levels!
November 25, 2025 at 1:24 pm #317962… and of the British built cars, how many of those manufacturers are currently British owned.
And of the British ‘assembled’ cars, what percentage of UK manufactured parts go into them, and is that really likely to change much by the 2035 target date; given the Labour policy of targeting businesses.?
Certainly unlikely for EV batteries for a start-off.
November 25, 2025 at 1:35 pm #317964Motability said it hopes that 50% of the vehicles it offers will come from British factories by 2035
lol
They know that will not happen but if it keeps N010 off of their lucrative backs for now
The presented sums are
The scheme currently leases about 300,000 vehicles a year. Assuming it remains about the same size, that would mean 150,000 British-built vehicles being leased in 2035 – up from 22,000 last year
Rachael from accounts has again failed to factor in the fact that 100% of future mobility users will continue to choose a car according to their needs and means as they have always done.
British made or not
Yet again her sums fall apart even before they are even implemented
Dear oh dear another half baked idea that was scribbled on the back of a fag packet and soon to go up in smoke
Just a thought
Or perhaps it was never designed to ever work instead its aim was to simply pander and get Joe Publics approval before spring
Mmmmm

I do know there are more people employed in associated businesses, manufacturing, logistics, ports etc in the North East than are actually employed at Nissan Sunderland.
November 25, 2025 at 2:11 pm #317968Just seen that total chunt Danny Kelly on TV. His take is that if a disabled person is able to save enough money to pay an AP, then should they be getting any form of disabled benefits.
It beggars belief that these people are allowed to spout the nonsense they do.
I just hope a few of these get to experience what we go through daily in the near future.
November 25, 2025 at 3:24 pm #317971I think this will now lead to further discussions on the scheme in general.
i 100% understand people complaining why do people that can afford £1000’s for an AP even get benefits??
I don’t agree but in black and white out of context it doesn’t look good. They don’t look at what you’re entitled to it’s a case of do you really need this “tax payer “ help costing us?!
As a single disabled person I couldn’t possibly save £1000’s for an AP in a million years.
i think the next conversations will be “so if they can drive somewhere and get out and walk about so why can’t they walk into a nice warm office like us???”
I can hear them now for all the “of work age” none debilitating disabled people with cars!…
If 50% were British cars in 10 years it would be good if they worked it as a better deal to us the consumers at least by having the British built ones cheaper to lease – even better I’ll take a Micra instead of Renault 5 is its only £60 a week sign me up I’ll cope!
Anyway, like I say I don’t necessarily agree with all this but I think this is now a hot topic that the government has just looked at the tip of the iceberg quickly to get a quick win for the Budget tomorrow
November 25, 2025 at 3:27 pm #317972VW Polo GTI why that 2ltr engine same as Mini 2ltr and VW are going through a very tough time but no it is not british although oh no we lost over 90 billion coming out the EU and we all have to pay for it.
November 25, 2025 at 3:34 pm #317973Hi
I have always believed that motability was set up to provide a way for the UK government to support the entire UK motor industry.
However motability customers if given a “free” choice will select 97% of the time a car not made in the UK.
Only 7% of cars on the motability scheme are built/assembled in the UK.
The decision of Motability to remove certain “luxury” brands wholesale from the scheme, thus removing customers choice.
In my view this is being done to pander to certain views of the press. Our Government now looking everywhere to find ways to stay in power. Thus hoping the votes lost by this move will be more than offset by those that believe motability customers should not be allowed to drive “luxury” cars.
What next?
How to move from 7% UK cars to 50% UK cars on the scheme by 2035. It could be done by UK motor manufacturers building as good as Chinese/Korean cars at a competitive price. Then motability customers will be able to decide themselves. But probably the advance payments will be used to guide customers into UK cars.
Perhaps we are seeing the end of motability.
November 25, 2025 at 3:40 pm #317974Very strange if the tories were in this would look even worse as they wanted more cuts to disabled and as for reform they stated or Lee Anderson wanted a return to the three wheel plastic pig do any of them know there is a case of breaching the Equality act 2010 and even discrimination in much of this. I think all politicians need to live in the real world and try being disabled it’s not fun and as think it is not easy to get DLA or PIP and even ESA although being a pensioner glad to be off that benefit as it was to me very degrading.
November 25, 2025 at 4:30 pm #317975I do think this is an agender that could be disastrous they are not saying just luxury they are saying premium models that could mean Peugeot Hybrids GT top of range models, that may have more standard equipment like heated seats park assist so it is very worrying why gov has got involved for first time since 1977, when motability was set up in meddling with the scheme which even though the press has for many years meddled and told lies it really needs a legal challenge as choice for disabled has been fought over for many years and it is just not right even though BMW Mercedes and others i’m not at all interested in it also as said will stop cars with features that are helpful for us.
November 25, 2025 at 4:34 pm #317976Apologies, but it’s impossible not to make this political, because that’s why this decision has been made…
The rabid far right have made Motability a clarion call to arms. The disciples of Fartage will always believe his propaganda. We can’t even rely on the media to question its veracity, as most of the media is right-wing controlled (now includes the BBC).🤦🏻♂️
The Tories left a complete mess for Labour to fix. No-one could fathom why Sunak called the election when he did, but they could no longer be trusted by the electorate or investors.
Labour are in a no win position, as they have raise money for the exchequer, as the Tories run down public services / Defence / NHS etc over the past 14 years, and now they need investment.
If you think things are bad now under Labour, then just wait until Fartage gets elected. Zero experience, zero competence, Pro- Putin, Pro-Trump and anti-EU. Worrying times.😱
Anyway, rant over and back to Motability. I was going to rejoin in early 2026 (when I retire). However, if all I am left with is Nissan, Toyota, Vauxhall, MG etc then I won’t rejoin and make my own arrangements…
Kind regards

Saved me some typing there, agreed on all counts. If Reform get in then heaven help us all.
November 26, 2025 at 4:55 pm #318115As a disabled member plus a stroke victim. I spent over an hour yesterday afternoon contributing to this subject, only to find the topic had been frozen, presumably due to the budget not being announced until today. However as the topic was still relevant and accurate, so any contributions that were sent before it was frozen should have been added back after the budget was announced.
Sadly this has discouraged me from any further contributions at great effort in the future.

Oh look! A far left idiot who obviously voted for this Marxist Government, a government who have imposed these changes, yet blames Reform! You couldn’t make it up
There was no 20 billion black hole, there us niw, they dug this hole by giving train drivers and junior doctors massive pay rises, there was no austerity until Rachel from Accounts screwed up the economy, tgere was no reason to give away tge Chagos islands abd Billiobs of pounds, thank God oeopke will bring in Reform at the next election ( ypthough this Marxist govetnment gas already stop9ed lical elections)
Until benefits and illegal immigrants are sorted this country will bounce along the bottom in the world.
Mirability should only be available to those who can’t walk, not for “stress”
November 27, 2025 at 9:05 am #318273Is there a cost saving implication, but not VAT, to the Government by removing ‘luxury’ cars?
As for luxury, can one of the most popular brands (BMW) be deemed luxury? Aren’t the two mutually exclusive?
I have had a few BMW’s in the past on the scheme, thoroughly enjoyed them. I don’t see the issue for the Government, if there is no cost to the Government, then why should they seek to limit our choices?

November 27, 2025 at 9:28 am #318276To be fair Motability has been taking the wee wee. At some point CEO was paid 1.7 million plus bonuses, currently it’s nearly 800k. Seriously… At some point they were sitting on 2bn cash reserve. Don’t forget it’s owned by 4 banks. To be honest it should be nationalised and turned into a public car leasing company or replaced with a scheme enabling dealers to offer similar all inclusive leasing deals for disabled people using PIP.
November 27, 2025 at 3:42 pm #318356Im not sure I’d call a 1 series or a an Audi A1 a luxury car. But hey ho, any excuse to bash the disabled, I suppose.
