Keyfob Battery Failure No Warning

So I was in the supermarket, just loaded the Enyaq boot with the shopping, returned the trolley, came back to the car and couldn’t get in, between closing the boot and returning the trolley, the fob had died.

I’d normally ring the father in law to give me a lift to get the spare key, but his car was in the garage being repaired, next port of call would be the sister in law but she was on holiday. So I walked home, around a mile, I walk a lot so it wasn’t a problem. I wasn’t sure it was the battery due to not getting a warning on the car dash. At home I replaced the battery and the red light came back in the keyfob, walked back to the supermarket and recovered the car.

Two tips from this, keep a spare keyfob battery in the car and a small screwdriver to open it, you could then get in with the emergency key and change the battery. Second, we have an Air Tag on the keyfob that uses the same 2032 battery, if I can find a micro screwdriver that attaches to the keyfob I could have swapped them.

Then there’s the after thought, why the f@@k didn’t I go to the Timpsons stall in the supermarket car park and get them to change the battery?

Just going to say that😂but would have cost an arm and leg!

Skoda (Superb) is the only car I have had where there has been the need for numerous battery changes often without warning and ended up putting in a cr2035, which dimensionally is only 3mm thicker and will fit😉

@kezo, I don’t understand why there was no warning, the infotainment system usually gives a warning when it detects the battery is low. Also, we’ve had the car 14 months and this is the third keyfob battery, the original one and two Energiser Lithium that we put in. Does the 2035 last longer?

Just looked online abd you are correct about being expensive, AI response says people have been quoted £12 to £25 for Timpsons battery replacement. My battery cost £8 for a pack of 6 and I also got some exercise.

Replacing small 2032 or similar batteries is a pain, they seem to crop up everywhere. I’ve never thought about carry a spare, but I just might from now on.

Does anyone know about the Duracell ones? I seem to recall somewhere saying not to use that brand. I just can’t remember.

One negative of using lithium – Alkaline batteries have a specific voltage range which can be reliably monitored as through use. lithium battery’s doesn’t always provide a good indication of there charge level remaining because they have nominal voltage the same as alkaine, but can just drops of a cliff without warning, especially in devices that are designed for alkaline use, lithium’s behaviour isn’t always guaranteed, as they can appear full and then just die due to how they are reported Tx / Rx with the car. Different brands can also react differently.

Looking around, the Enyak uses a 2032 alkaline from factory. I’d be inclined to re-fit with an alkaline and your likely find your car reports when the battery gets low however, as long as your aware of the risks you could try a GP lithium and carry a couple of alkaline in the car as an emergency if you can get any, as alkaline are getting harder to find branded.

The nominal capacity of 2032 is around 225mAh and a 2035 around 235mAh or extra life battery’s around 1.5x the nominal capacity. CR2035 is more of a specialised battery and cn be difficut to pick up from your averge shop.

Varta are as good as any and do different batteries for high and low drain.

I know Duracell have an issue with the protective coating they have which prevents serious injury if children swallow them, they simply don’t work in the Apple Air Tag which is why I have a stash of Energiser 2032.

I’ll get a couple from Skoda next time I’m in.

Skoda will change them for free, but its worth trying a GP/Varta as they might register different and not expensive.
