I’m a Northern Ireland resident and I’ve just got a message through from Motability that because of UK/EU Windsor Framework regulations, as of the new year, cars sold in GB can’t be sold in NI. Our cars have to conform to EU regulations.
I was aware of that but apparently this means that some cars on the list will not be available for us to order. It hasn’t said yet which ones , just to contact your dealer if you applying for a new car.
I am collecting a Volvo next month and was aware of the regulations as Volvo state you have to let them know if you are in NI so they can deliver the right model. The main difference I can see is the the traffic sign speed limiter will be on by default.
only residents here realise the effects we are feeling with the cars the latest. Doing Xmas shopping on line is a lottery. I can fill a basket of goods, even on Amazon and reach the checkout to be told some of the items can’t be delivered to this address.
      what next??

The cars they are talking about are Peugeot, Renault, Vauxhall and JLR.  They will not be available in NI because of the EU rules. The manufacturers have known this for a long time but have done nothing about it. They are happy enough to sell GB compliant cars in GB but will not make the cars EU compliant to be able to sell them in NI.

Now only 2 VW & Skoda dealers in NI soon there will be none of the above here either. Bells in Crossgar have already give up Renault.

Can you not order from a GB forecourt/car showroom, and then just drive it back to NI, and transfer the servicing etc to somewhere local?
NI are still in the UK, and Motability are UK wide?

I have ASD and thus have difficulty with social and understanding information, written and verbal. I process information in logical blocks, before I reply. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong.
I also have a corneal visual condition, which makes me visually impaired without daytime, or daytime bulbs, among other disabilities/conditions.

Apart from Motability probably prohibiting it, there are some problems I could see. You would need to register it to your address and that would block it so you would need a GB address. Even if you did have a friend/relative with an address, if you were buying privately by finance, the owners details for the car would need to be the same as rage credit record address so that rules it out.

Even if it were possible, you would have the added cost of ferry transport, overnight stays etc.

Kezo link above seems to be the best hope.

The new car you buy on the mainland to bring back to NI would only be GB compliant, we have to have cars over here that are EU compliant.

Not quite the same. If I bought and registered a car in England and brought it to NI, it needs no EU compliance. So, for example, if I relocate from England to NI and bring my car, it is legal.

Compliant goes beyond physical features. It involves going through lengthy paperwork processes. There are GB countries that won’t import into Northern Ireland because it’s too expensive and time consuming to ‘comply’

If you live in GB you are probably not aware of the various ways we are treated differently. If you want to go on holidays with your dog in England, Scotland or Wales, all GB residents can just pack up and drive. However, if you want to visit Northern Ireland, you have to apply for a pet travel document!
