Unless I missed something, how he can use a car for business? Plus he can only do 10K now. He’ll be out of business very quickly if only reliant on Motability car. No?

When I was on the scheme, I arranged with the then insurer (RSAM) that I could use my Motability vehicle for business purposes (commuting being covered already in the standard policy). I was sent a revised insurance certificate that included usage for business purposes.  I believe this facility is still available from Direct Line/Aviva.

As for the ‘new’ 10k mileage allowance, one of the additional support mitigations for excess mileage is for travel to/from work:

As for any legitimate business mileage charges over and above the mileage allowance, as a company director, he will be able to write down/write off against tax any legitimate business travel expenditure, which should cover any legitimate excess business mileage over his Motability ‘allowance’.

He may even be entitled to financial support through the government’s Access to Work scheme, albeit I am not too sure of the intricacies of this scheme nowadays.

So, it may work out financially neutral to him overall.

I also had MB business cover when I was a trade union civil servant and. travelled throughout Central Scotland, albeit still with a relatively low mileage.
