Well I collected my car today, 240 miles up to Lowestoft was a nice goodbye to the BMW.

Lings Hyundai were great and very efficient, car was waiting fully charged for me.

First impressions were really good, wasn’t sure if I’d like the colour, but really happy with it.

After about 30mins I was ready for the drive back, and I thought I’d see just how economic it is. I set the sat nav, and the cruise for 56mph, and drove to Swindon to see the girlfriend.

Initially the car said I had 298 miles of range and the temp was 7C. I ended up doing 212.6 miles, economy was 4.6 miles/kWh, temp had gone up a bit too to 10C and I still had 71 miles left according to the GOM, it was really windy, so not sure if that made a difference, but I also had the aircon on, so that eats a bit of range but can see 300 miles plus easily achievable in the summer.

First thoughts, love it, really quiet, ride is good, I’m surprised it handles as well as it does. The radar on the cruise is amazing, coming up to roundabouts, it slows with the speed of the cars in front, no braking needed and pulls away with them too, you just have to be ready to break if there isn’t room to pull out. Auto steering is also really clever, did 30 seconds hands free on a twisty road, no problem at all.  Seats are really comfortable, easy to get the perfect position, although it’s a shame there’s no memory setting  Heating works really well on the seats and the steering wheel  also tried the seats on cool, wow, that’s going to be lovely in the summer

The Krell audio system sounds great and the Aircon etc all has physical buttons, and the wireless charging works really well.  Oh and there’s even a HUD and that’s works a treat, great to have the directions in your eye line as well as the speed limits

Only negatives are I miss the clunk of BMW doors, not including mats in a £42k car is a bit tight and it’s a shame that CarPlay requires you to plug the phone in with a lead.

Took the car to a BP Pulse rapid charger, managed to get it working ok and was charging at 53kWH, 30 mins and I had a 75% charge again.

So far I’d highly recommend the Kona, looking forward to trying it at night and also checking out the performance tomorrow

Would you recommend Lings then? Have had a bad response to asking for a test drive from a local dealer & lowestoft isn’t much further & have family there plus collecting would be easy as can get the train.

Did you test drive it from them too? Thanks, will read your thread now as that’s what I’m now looking at given Q2 pricing.

The Kona was offered at a £2450 discount from a few dealers about 3 weeks ago. Lings was one of the dealers that had the offer.

I didn’t even bother with a test drive, I had driven the e-Niro, so had a good idea what the car would be like and apart from a small boot would have been on my wish list, that offer, now officially the price Motability have this quarter made it a no brainer for me.

Phoned them and had a chat and ordered same day, Mark at the Lowestoft dealership was really good and easy to work with and certainly have no issues recommending them.

For me it was a 500 mile round trip, but we’ll worth it for a great car. It’s just about finding a dealer that actually has one, as the price is only on the last remaining MY20.5 cars, I’d have driven to Scotland though, I have yet to read/see a bad review anywhere on the car

I will seriously consider the Kona although I cannot order until q4. Much will depend on the AP at the time. All the reviews are excellent and a 300 mile range with home charging almost rules out the need for fast charging on the go. Did you manage to get your Kona at the Q2 AP?

I got it as a £2450 discount off the Q1 price that a few dealers were offering, that is the same price as the current Q2 price. I spoke to the dealer on 1/4/21 and they said it made no difference, but if it had been ordered at the full price they would have made sure I got the new price. As I’ve said above, Lings were a pleasure to deal with

Excellent news.  Will be interested to see your view of the car and it’s real life range later. A bargain at £1499. I expect the facelift model to be a bit pricier but nothing like the £4k we saw in q1.

the new model actually dropped in price a bit, and has a sunroof too. So hopefully won’t be more. The Soul AP dropped this quarter too, so fingers crossed for you. Re my AP, was even better at £387 as a War Pensioner.

I think if you can have a home charger, you’d recoup the AP at £4K easily if you do 8k a year. I can’t have a home charger, but doing 20k a year, I worked it out that as long as I pay less than 49p kWh I’ll save money, that’s coming from a 52mpg diesel! The savings can be huge… as well as the feel good factor and at least making an effort to clean up the environment!

Looks lovely & glad you’re enjoying it.

The BP Pulse (Polar) chargers, that was one of the 150kW ones & with the BP Pulse card they come in at 27p/kWh I think it is, used to be 20.4p/kWh until a few months ago.

There are also older slower BP chargers, usually in pub/restaurant car parks, they cost 15p/kWh using the BP card and will deliver up to 50kW which is usually fast enough. Just remember these are usually single chargers so no backup if it doesn’t work, although there are 8 of them at the Milton Keynes Coachway just off the M1 (shaded by the “mushrooms”) and some Ionity rather expensive chargers in addition.

I did some calculations and prior to Covid typically covered, 15000 miles pa. On a full 3 year lease that would be around 6500 in fuel. Home charging on overnight tariffs would reduce that by 90%, so its a bit of a no brainer, as things currently stand.  I will start looking properly in the autumn and set the various wheels in motion regarding a home charger, and probably a smart meter which I think I would need for an economy 7 tariff. It looks like you have achieved the WLTP range on your car 283.6 is pretty impressive and the key for me, and i guess many, is to make charging on the go virtually redundant.

There’s a quick calculation on vauxhall website comparing running costs of eV & petrol corsa’s

Petrol Corsa worked out to £130 a month running costs roughly

EV Corsa was £20 a month running cost roughly

Obviously higher miles = bigger difference

Well done on making the switch, car looks very nice in that colour. Once you get your head used to battery power rather than combustion power it all becomes second nature. I love my Soul and will never go back to a fossil fuel car ever again now, just watch the speed as its very easy to take your eye off the ball and get a ticket lol.

@gothitjulie. Yes the BP ones are a bit expensive, but just wanted to see how fast it could charge. I have followed advise though on how much to charge and set DC charging to stop at 80%. I stopped at an Aldi yesterday and it’s great getting “Free” fuel

I went out yesterday and just enjoyed the car and drove it as I normally drive, did 200 miles, stuck it in sport, wow, you seriously get slung back in the seat. Overtaking a car doing 50mph and it was just as easy as the beamer, pick up is instant. 70mph on the motorway, hit 86mph at one stay, you’re right about watching the speedo. And at the end of the day, my average consumption for the day was 4.7kWh which equates to 300.8 miles on a full charge. I knew it was the way to go, but I’m surprised just how much I’m enjoying driving it!

I’d actually go hire one instead if I could just to dodge another trip to a cacky dealership & trying to get blood out of a stone (ie a longer test drive).
