Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate …. Opinions.

Surprisingly for an old guy like me the Ioniq 6 is now top of my shortlist.

My new vehicle order date is in just one month (Dec 12th) so I’m now coming close to ‘ make your mind up time’ lol.

I’ve researched a number of cars including the Mazda CX60, Kia EV6, Ionic 5, Renault Austral e, Enyaq (humph!!!!) and also considered  extending my lease on my Peugeot 3008 hybrid.

I’m interested in changing to full EV and feel that now may be my last opportunity to do so due to advancing age. The Ioniq 6 Ultimate comes complete with all the items on my ‘need and wish list’ including a heat pump, opening sunroof, full electric relaxation front seats, and an essential quality audio (Bose) etc, etc. So no expensive optional extras would be required.

I haven’t previously considered the Ioniq 6 because when I’ve seen them around they looked to low for me to get in and out of, so when I was in the Hyundai dealership for an Ioniq 5 test drive I sat in a ‘6’ just to rule it out, but to my surprise I was able to get in and out with no difficulty at all (due to the raised floor over the batteries) …. that started me thinking.

I’ve almost convinced myself that I should order this car but I thought I would ask you guys for your opinions if you have any.

      Cheers.

I thought the point in digital wing mirrors was aerodynamics, in which case, why are they so big? When you see the size of the camera and add a few LEDs to the outside you could easily halve both the height and length. I saw a set on (I think) a Jaguar ipace and they were pretty much 2 aero wings sticking out each side with the camera at the tip of each wing. At first glance it looked like someone had taken the mirror off, thats the size these should be not these rather large and hideous boxes. Safe to say they’re an option I’ll pass on, thanks.

        They are for aerdynamics 😉🤔

With the 18″ aero wheels (seen in other European markets) in combination with the digital mirrors gives 0.21 drag effiency and WLTP 381 miles. However when you start looking further into it, it seems having the 18″ wheels accounts for 380 miles and only 1 mile for the digital mirrors 😂

Ive saw a test, where they changed the 20″ stock tyres to a different manufacturer (forget Youtbe) they were able to extract another 30 miles. In the same test they put after market 18’s on with decent tyres and got better range than the stock 18’s!

Its a shame we don’t get the option of wheel size in the UK as, I would probably make my trip there and back in one go. The downside is the 18’s are only 225, where as the 20’s are 245, meaning better handling for the 20’s.

          I. don’t like the look of the 18in wheels and I am not too bothered about the extra millage, but if they looked the same as the 20in and were still 245, I would be happy to have the 18in for the more comfortable ride.

I drove an Ioniq 5 with digital camera mirrors, and although they gave a very high resolution image when driving slowly through town, I found them distracting due to the “cinematic” quality of the image. At one point driving through Worcester there were two nicely dressed ladies on the pavement behind me and I could clearly make out the fabric and patterns of their clothing. This was at low speed in heavy traffic, but it was obviously a distraction (this is a genuine observation, not just put in for laughs) It was almost like watching a film on the end of the interior dash. The standard mirrors are large and clear, and evidently do a better job in wet weather and night driving.

If the camera system improved safety and awareness of the road in all driving conditions I would consider it, but I honestly thought they were just an interesting but distracting gimmick.

As far as range is concerned I would personally sacrifice 40/50 miles of distance per charge in exchange for greater stability and safety. It’s easy for me to say though because I average just 80 miles a week with very occasional longer journeys, and I am usually the only person in the car so I only have to think about myself. Those of you who have much higher mileage to cover and passengers with their own needs will probably have different opinions.

As I’ve mentioned before, I also think the 20″ wheels look superb on the ‘6’, and complete the eye-catching look.

It seems from the Facebook group its not a very comfortable vehicle on long journeys

its long and wide with a large turning circle which can make parking difficult

I would thoroughly test this vehicle out first, looks a lovely car

The only complaints I’ve seen is one guy complaining about not being able to travel 4 hours at 80mph  and charging wherever he likes, more an infrastructure issue than the car.  Others have said it’s comfortable enough but, I’d agree a test drive is essential for any car, afterall you’re committing to a 3 year lease.

, it appears from the Arnold Clark review on Youtube that there’s a snow mode as well as the usual Eco, normal, sport modes.  Not sure quite how it helps or if it’s only on the AWD variants but worth checking out.

I’m not sure which Facebook page says that because the one I’m on and every other report says the exact opposite… it’s a big comfortable cruiser and with the 360 cameras, parking sensors and good visibility is easy to park?

                    Quote from Honest John:

Hyundai Ioniq 6 2023: Handling and ride quality
Our first impression of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is just how relaxing it is to drive. You feel totally isolated from the outside world – it does a superb job of hushing any wind or road noise. The ride quality is impressive, too – particularly for a heavy electric car. It’s an exaggeration to say you won’t notice bumps in the road, but it certainly causes less discomfort than some EVs.

We’ve only driven the rear-wheel-drive Ioniq 6 so far. While RWD perhaps conjures up images of old BMWs going sideways on wet roundabouts, the Hyundai feels safe and secure. That’s not to say it doesn’t feel agile – the steering, while perhaps a little on the light and uncommunicative side, is eager to quickly change the car’s direction when required.

Despite its pretty huge dimensions, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is an easy car to place on a rural road (or around town), thanks to excellent visibility. We haven’t tried one with the digital door mirrors, but the Surround View Monitor (standard on Ultimate and First Edition models) makes light work out of tight parking manoeuvres.

                      Watch Bjorn Nyland YT reviews.

If you think the 6 is wide at 1880mm have a look at the ioniq 5 dimensions.

Turning circle 11.8m, which isn’t huge considering  the shorter wheel base Tuscon 0.8m less

The person must have drove a Fiat 500 before 😂

The rwd has snow mode, that limits power and alters traction control. I was watching the below video of the ioniq 5 v Cupra Born last night. It appears the tables have turned where EV’s are concerned, where as rwd is better than fwd 🤔

I took a test drive in one last night and one of the tests was parking and turning into my driveway. If you saw how tight that was you would realise just how agile the car is. My wife closes her eyes every time we enter it and reverse out lol. The 360 degree parking system is out of this world and the best i have seen in any car, yes it is a large beast but certainly does not feel it when driving or parking it thanks to the tech inside. I even got on with the bings and bongs, certainly not as obtrusive as people make them out to be but maybe i`m used to it coming from a KIA.

Can confirm this – been to EH today and was told the same thing – they only have ONE left in stock, it’s white, which is the one colour I was kinda planning to avoid after 4 years in a white Tiguan (and next door has a white qashqai, with white BMWs and Mercs just across the square) – to make it a little worse, it also has the cameras instead of the mirrors which is an unwanted upgrade of £1000 which would eat all (and then some) of the £750 EH are contributing.

Seems the deals around for the 6 are all stock cars and they all seem to have the cameras instead of mirrors which adds a grand to the cost, completely wiping out the 750 dealer contribution.

The cynic in me can’t help but wonder if the dealers ordered too many with the digital mirror option and people are generally wanting standard mirrors as the digital ones are an expensive extra with pretty much zero functional improvement, so the dealers are now desperate to get rid of them hence the disount/promotion

How many people who have ordered or are considering ordering a Ioniq 6 would be happy to accept the car (in the colour they want) with the digital camera for an extra £245, which is effectively the deal, and saves the wait for a factory ordered car.

Although I do think that they look cool (although would be cooler if smaller) but I would also be worried about vandals breaking them off.

I was just interested to hear peoples views on the subject.

I`ve driven one and they are horrendous so for me it would be a big fat NO, even if they were free. Quite happy to wait for the right car in the colour i want. Yes its a pity there were no stock cars to bag the extra £750 but you cannot have everything i suppose.

All they had when i was in the dealer was a white premium edition, so not suitable.
