My car at the moment is a Nissan Ariya with quite a lot of tech as standard and I’ve been thinking about how much of the tech I actually use or want and to be honest I don’t use much of it, for example the powered seats I’ve probably used twice, front and rear cameras with 360% view I still tend to use my side mirrors and theirs probably loads of stuff I’ve never used . But the head-up display, which I had on a previous BMW X1, I wouldn’t do without. The keyless system is so handy I wouldn’t like to be without.
So what are your thoughts on what tech you can do without or wouldn’t like to give up.

i like and use most of the stuff on my one. most im so used to i wouldnt like to be without. sensors and camera, blind spot, fancy cruise etc. anything that makes me safer and dont have to try and look over my shoulders too much is all great. in lane steer i dont really use much but i dont use motorways much or long runs

Last Car: Toyota C-HR Excel Hybrid...4 way 80kg hoistNever use cruise control as I feel out of control. Also lane assist is dangerous. However really value blind spot monitoring on motorways, and did initially miss parking assist until I relearned parallel parking!

Heated Front Passenger Seat- wife doesn’t like.
Heated Rear Seats-dogs can’t reach the buttons.
Power Opening Panorama Roof-weather in NI crap.
Multiple USB ports and 12v socket-no need of them.
Lane-Keeping Aid with Lane-Departure Warning-always switched off.
Cruise Control with Speed Limiter-very little motorway use.
Auto Start-Stop-Ford battery never charged enough to operate system.
Android Auto, Ford Pass-just don’t bother.
Eco and Sport Driving Modes- Keep in Normal always.
As long as I have my heated driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and some good tunes on the DAB radio, I’m happy.
I’m probably a minority here but I use all the tech I have every day. Blind spot, lane keep assist along with adaptive cruise and traffic jam assist means the car will crawl with traffic and stay in lane without much interaction from me. 360 cameras to get the car in and out of the garage every day. Boot hands free opening every week with the football gear. Heated seats only when it’s cold.
I’ve had issues with the adaptive cruise control when on duel carriage ways, it doesn’t slow down as quick as I would like when coming up to roundabouts. Bottom tightening in fact?
Like Aime I use most of the tech. Love the adaptive cc, especially in 30mph zones. Agree that lane assist as well as start stop are both death traps. Never used the self parking to be honest. VW Tiguan
Lane Assist – literally tried to kill us I’d happily do without that.
ACC – Very useful, use it on most longer runs.
Electric seats – great for when I’m waiting for people, used several times a week
Heated front seats and steering wheel – Used several times daily, the heat helps both adults with bad backs
Digital Side Mirrors – so much better in the wet than traditional mirrors
360 Camera – makes reversing much easier, used daily
Heated rear seats – used occasionally
Pano roof – often kept closed but there are times when my daughter wants it open to watch trees as we pass
CarPlay is in constant use
When I look back at the items we deliberately chose, they’re all in use and making our lives just a little better. The only few items we don’t use came with the car and would have come with a lower spec too.
Power boot is so much better than having to drag down a heavy door

Could live without all of it, but wouldn’t want to 🙂 Love the ACC, used on every medium or long journey. Love the reversing cam with top-down view, incredibly useful. Love everything being keyless (except when I walk past the car with the key still in my pocket and it unlocks itself…). Lane assist not too fussed about – It hasn’t tried to kill us, yet, but I wouldn’t miss it if it wasn’t there. Love the blind-spot alerts. Absolutely adore the auto-headlights/high-beam assist. Love the atuomatic wipers. I’m old enough to remember when electric windows were the neatest thing, so love all this stuff being standard 🙂
Preconditioning and lane keep assist. I would hate to be without these now. And I’m really looking forward to the kick activated power boot, I think that will become another essential.
We had the kick-activated powered boot in our previous car (Tiguan Allspace) and really miss it in our current car!

I have one that can roll forward/backwards when locked just from the remote. Got me out of a tight space or two and raised a few eyebrows as well. It’s useful but gets used more just as a gimmick.

the first thing the salesman showed me on picking the car up was how to turn the lane assist off and its not been on since.
the forward radar anti collission is a nuisance around here keeps thinking falling leaves are small cars and because cars are parked half on and off the pavements seems to think the are pulling out. total pain in arse and cant be turned off.
i could happily do without most of the eu dictated crap. its just annoying.
things i would like but dont have, heated washer jets, heated windscreen, heated seats, auto boot.
they would be useful.
I’m really looking forward to the park assist plus in my ID5 plus the adaptive cruise control. In current car ( and ALL cars) I have to have heated seats plus automatic gearbox ( if they count) . I definitely love preconditioning in the winter and will continue to use that. I believe my next car has 360 cameras for parking and that will be helpful as current car only has limited reversing sensors nothing at the front. I WISH next car had electric adjustment on seats but it doesn’t- I’ll miss that.
next car has super duper voice control so I think once I’m used to that I’ll like that
Something that makes my life easier is the warning ‘alarm’ which sounds when the tailgate is being opened by the driver from within the car. As I’m blind it means that if my wife is picking me up from somewhere she can pop the tailgate when she sees me approaching, I know where the car is and the boot is open ready for the guidedog to hop in to. Any car that lets you open the boot from within the car has to have the alarm so that a passing pedestrian doesn’t get taken out as they cross behind your car but not all models have the option of being able to open the boot remotely and dealers don’t seem to even know it’s a thing let alone which specs have it. Our Touran did whihc is how we discovered it so when we replaced it that was 1 of the things on the wish list. We ended up with a Tiguan and the VW configurator would have you believe that you have to add remote tailgate opening as an extra on top of power closing . After a bit of VW forum reading i took a punt on VW not bothering to programme 1 without the other and paid for opening only. It was a good call, we can open the boot from the key fob and the dash and are £350 better off than if I were more trusting.
One function on my CLA was comfort seats which let you set the driver and passenger seat to move slightly changing the angle of the seat back and base every minuteor so while you drove. At first it felt really weird, but really helped and stopped your back from getting stiff.
Self parking – I have never used it. Not because I prefer to park myself, just because it takes too long. Too long to set it up and too long to park. I have stopped using the memory parking at home as well, I just don’t trust it.

Ateca self parking. I use the parallel park all the time. It’s quick and really useful in my one way street, especially when people half block the disabled bay to make it really tricky. Rear view camera is great too. Often use the voice control for sat nav, but nothing else.
Turned off lane assist asap. Not been on for 3 years. ACC used once, useless.
Looking forward to new car next week with heated seats, powered tailgate and blind spot warning.
Most of the Tech on the I5 is magical power seats, didnt think I would use them, but I do, a lot, for moving around. Power tailgate is brill, approach the car an you get warning beeps, an then it opens. You can do it from the fob as well. The Self Driving Aids work seamlessly and accurately. The car essentially drives itself on the motorway. The blindspot monitoring helps a lot. Lane keeping assist is mild and works. There are 2 sections of road it gives a kick, but I know where they are and am expecting it.
The 360 camera is ace. I have to check around the car to see where garage cat is lurking when pulling away from the drive. Best thing us the Head Up Display, (HUD) it should be standard in every car.
