Motability will make a huge saving on insurance costs and there is no admin cost to Motability. Drive smart is run by itself, like RAC, and DLM.
There is no cost if it drives out the fraudsters misusing the Motability system. No doubt this is its biggest target and is probably mandatory from the Govt.
April 22, 2026 at 7:31 am #353873I would imagine the insurance companies foot the bill.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
April 22, 2026 at 8:16 am #353878But imagine how many staff are tied up asking complaints about false readings on drive smart.
Don’t forget if they bought it in bulk they would have got a discount.

Customer service probably 2 teenagers on work experience or what is now coming on screen A1 before you speak to anyone.

April 22, 2026 at 11:35 am #353917If this is purely bout insurance I don’t know why they don’t allow a two tier system that lets the customer source their own insurance and as a result pay a lower AP as well as keep the existing system for those that want the all inclusive package
April 22, 2026 at 12:16 pm #353920Its a low cost mobile telematics app data enhancer – your phone is the expensive part, which you download the app on. The developer is Track Global Solutions Holdings Canada.
April 22, 2026 at 12:38 pm #353922Motability said the 12% IPT added by the Govt. cost them an extra £3m on their insurance cost – OMG you say, that’s huge! Until you see the actual rise per customer of £3.30 per year based on their own figures of 900,000 Motability users. The extra tenner per lease hardly seems excessive.
But we don’t know the actual savings passed on to Motability by DLM for adding Drive Smart to their customer base, it could, if rolled out, save them significant sums. I doubt the £160 you can “win” with Drive Smart will pay out much given the restrictions and red flag mayhem that’s going on, so there’s sod all cost there.
I do think they fell for DLM’s spin and didn’t think through the bad publicity and backlash from their customers nor the flaky nature of Drive Smart itself – they may not roll it out as planned if it causes so much grief (fingers and toes all crossed on that one).
However, its not unknown for management to double down on their mistakes rather than admit it and move on – I saw millions wasted in my public sector procurement job on monumentally stupid management decisions and their refusal to admit they fell for some salesman’s snake oil nonsense, including the £15m extra cost of one contract that they only admitted was a mistake all along after 10 years and the manager responsible retiring. Despite all the staff telling them this before it went live and, indeed, several excellent staff resigning because of it (and they broke the procurement rules – which means they broke the law – but that’s also sadly not uncommon, anyone want a Scottish Ferry?? It’ll be cheap – and on time…cough cough…).
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
