RbdoDo they offer good prices, or do they try to make a profit/ current retail prices?
Many thanks in advance.

Asked many times… Basically they ask top price, give no warranty and if a service is due it won’t be done.

RbdoSorry for spamming. Should’ve searched harder. Thanks for the reply.
March 20, 2023 at 8:33 am #215697Its a RIP OFF
Asked about my 1.7 DCi XTrail Tekna FWD Manual 7 seater.
RRP (4 years ago) £33,000
AP (4 years ago) £1,700
Good condition – Mileage 8,500
MB want £23,000 take it or leave it!!!
Ridiculous.

Motability would have paid £3 or £4k less for the vehicle depending on the deal they had with the manufacturer.
Say they paid £30k for it minus the VAT @20% = £25000.
minus the AP £1700 = £23,300
minus 3 years PIP payment £9000 = £14,300
Add onto that 3yrs insurance, set of tyres, 1 or 2yr service plan, an MOT and £250 good condition bonus- £2,800ish. The car owes them about £17k!!
I had the same with my 17 plate Skoda Superb 190 – it was cheaper to buy a 67 plate from the dealer fully serviced, warranty.

March 20, 2023 at 9:53 am #215705I’ve asked for a purchase price at the end of every lease, purely out of interest, and every single time the price they want has been thousands more than it should be. They get away with it sometimes because people have a fear of buying second hand cars and take the view that they know the car so aren’t buying a lemon.
The problem is that the car comes with no warranty (and, Sod’s Law dictates that something major will go wrong in the year after you buy it!). If you buy from a dealer, you will have a warranty, any servicing or tyre requirements will have been addressed prior to sale and, for those that need it, finance can be arranged. Also, nobody in their right mind pays the screen price. A discount can always be negotiated, something you cannot do with Motability!

Maybe, but do not overlook the fact that Motability Operations do not want to sell your vehicle to you.
They want you to take out a brand new (and profitable) lease contract with them and not lose you as a (profitable) customer.
Hence, they will do absolutely no favours in selling you your vehicle – in fact the opposite will apply in that they will make you buying your vehicle a totally unattractive proposition (as they have seemingly done).
They would rather sell your vehicle for less elsewhere, so you remain on the scheme.
Some might call it a good business retention strategy!
Heavens, they are now throwing in a £750 bung to keep your custom (the New Vehicle Payment) which shows how much they want to retain you (or just how profitable you are to them by remaining on the scheme).
March 20, 2023 at 10:06 am #215708Part of the rationale for the Motability scheme when it was set up was that it would provide a regular supply of good used cars to the motor trade. That’s what it must do. Selling to anyone else is working against that commitment. They do not want you buying their cars from them, they want you to buy them via the motor trade.

JojoeThis really annoys me. MB get the car VAT free because they are supplying it to a disabled customer. You have financed it for 3-5 years, but MB will sell it to a dealer who’s going to make a profit for a lot less than they will sell it to you. This seriously needs looking into. Have you tried entering the reg in We Buy Any Car to see what they would pay for it?

I had already told MB that I was waiting for my new car to be delivered and I wanted to buy my current car for my son who had just had his stolen and was looking for a family car as they have just had a baby girl. So this kinda negates what you said as they already knew they were keeping me as a customer so were basically just ripping me off!
March 20, 2023 at 11:10 am #215717Read what I said above. There is an agreement in place that they dispose of vehicles into the trade. It isn’t their job to sell cars retail.
It’s not hard to track a car once it’s handed back and find where it ends up at a dealers. I did it with my last one. If you want to buy your old car, that’s the place to do it, completed with warranty.

True. And, of course, the irony is that the prices that they get from the trade are many thousands below the prices that they ask from us! I found our previous Motability car for sale at a dealer 200 miles away and the asking price was £2k less than Motability had quoted me – and that was after the dealer had serviced it, replaced some tyres and factored in the cost of a warranty and wriggle room for a discount. And after all of that the dealer will still make a handsome profit against the auction price that they paid for it!

IantoHmm. Interesting to find out where the old car goes. Wigwam stated he followed car. I tried but could not find it. Any advice.?

Probably a daft question but, how do you track your car once handed back? Thanks.

JojoeSearch Autotrader. I found our old car for sale at a dealer 20 miles away. It was listed about 3 weeks after we returned it. The advert disappeared after 2 weeks so it must have sold fast.
March 20, 2023 at 2:10 pm #215748As Jojoe says, Autotrader. Plug in the make, model, age, mileage range, colour etc. And keep looking until it pops up. Mine was handed in in Dorset and appeared at a dealer in Kent, serviced, new front tyres, warranty etc. I thought the asking price was fair.
