How is everyone getting on with their electric cars?

      Happy new year, to all.

So. I have had my e208 for just over 2 yrs. The battery range has plummeted. I have to charge it up every single night. When I is charged, it looks fine. It charges to 180 miles.

      However……

The second I leave the drive, the battery goes into freefall. I generally reads 40-45 miles left at half charge. I need it to have 60 just to get to work and back. It’s been in the Peugeot service dept being tested repeatedly. They acknowledge the poor battery reading. They then say, they cannot replace the battery because it isn’t displaying a fault when connected to a computer. They  also say, “although it says it only has that it is showing as actually having 100 miles left when it is attached to a computer’.

      Hmm…..

They have now given me the car back saying they cannot fix a car with no fault. I pointed out I drive slowly. Roughly 45-60mph. Never 70. I do not have a/c on or anything else as I am so conscious of the battery. I manually operate the windscreen wipers to eek out time between screen wipes.

I rang Motability. They simply said would you like to change your car early. I feel frustrated that they are not interested in this. Their attitude is if the garage said there’s no problem we cannot intervene. How is a car with only one (light) person inside it getting such poor milage?

I’ve got a petrol Citroën C4 but I remember reading awhile back a DS3 Etense (same as the e208) customer was only getting 100 miles out of a full charge she got frustrated with it in the end as garage couldn’t seem to find the problem Motability let her change the car early, basically what they are offering you.

Thing is Motability won’t really care because used cars are going for strong money at the moment so they will do well out of it and when the new owner finds out the problem like your having  it won’t be Motability problem by then either.

I would be annoyed if I was in your shoes though.

The miles left indication on the GOM (Guess-O-Meter)  is know to be poor (very poor) the way it works out the ‘Range’ is a complicated formula. when charged between 90-100% it uses the WLTP figures you see in the adverts for the car adjusted for the current temperature (more on that below). as soon as the charge drops below 90% it recalculates using a different formula, this time a blend between the WLTP figure and the previous driving style (and of course temperature adjusted) , this will often cause a sudden drop in indicated mileage range which can be alarming. then when you hit 50% it applies a different formula again, now its based on your previous and current driving style and temperature. often from this point on the range will not keep changing as much.

Now all that is fine but its still know to be pessimistic in indicated range. in fact most e208/e2008 drivers often ignore the range left figure and rather go by the state of charge indicator, SOME (not the slightly older ones) e208/2008’s will allow you to look how many miles per Kilowatt usage you are getting on average. this figure is better to check your range, you should be getting between 3 and 4 driving the way you are suggesting, more in warmer weather. so if you get 4M/KWhr then the battery in the e208 has a useable 45KWhrs so thats up to 180miles range, if you are getting 3M/Kwhr then just over 130 miles. BUT the temperature as a massive impact on range.

many users feel the range calculator on the Peugeot web site is about right so try that and see what figures it gives. (i tried to put a link here for that but it doesnt seem to let me 🙁  )

I am also the e208/e2008 forum and this is a very common question on there, some people are seeing less than 40 miles at just over 50% charge on the fuel gauge type display .

its really a bad range indicator on the display (bad as is design not a fault). when you put it back on charge what does the charger say as regards how many KW it has put back into the car? reset the trip meter after a charge, drive and record the mileage done on the charge, then fully charge it again and see the KWs that you had to put back in, dived that by the miles you have covered and see what the efficiency works out to, that may be of use if you have a real problem. let the garage know the results.

I have travailed a lot in a friends e2008 now just waiting for mine to arrive.

            I Hope you get sorted

Have a good new year…. Paul

Have you tried taking it to another Peugeot dealer (not owned by the same group)

Mb aren’t bothered if the garage can’t fix it, they would prefer to be rid and sell it on and get a decent price for it, as used car prices are still high. The problem for you is the AP’s are still higher than 2yrs ago and dependng on the car you may have to wait far longer to get.

This is imo one of the few area’s the scheme still shines – you can just swap it with little to no questions asked.  Imagine if you were a retail customer you would be stuck with it unless you could afford another or running yourself ragged tring to get it sorted.

I would clarify with Mb should you decide to terminate your lease you get any pro rata AP back, good condition bonus/payment and there’s no termination fee.

@Fordmax  just an idea for you to try, ignore what it says on the dash and drive it until it stops noting the actual mileage you travelled, then you will know the “real world figure” for your car,you will have to phone the RAC to either be towed or boosted some electricity to get you home.

Maybe stick with petrol or a 50/50…

                  Back to 70mph ?..

I think the room for improvement for EV’s is massive, I wonder how things pan out the more people switch..

fortunately the kona has no such issues afaik. range is better to start with too which also helps with confidence.  as said, i’d ignore the 45 miles and go with the 90miles for half battery less any reduction for cold weather etc.. 180 mile range tops isnt very comforting tho..

I have to agree too, with the Kona comes a greater range typically 290-300 give or take, and importantly, confidence in the miles remaining. If I have an additional 20 miles range on a long journey, over 100 miles, then I am happy. I set out with 168 miles on a 112 mile journey and had 50 left, technically a loss of 6 but insignificant in the overall numbers. Other times this works in reverse, I work on the basis its around 95% accurate.

I think he is bating. He never answers questions, just a booboy about EV’s. That’s fine, not everyone will like or want them, but to keep bleating on about it is tiresome.

Perhaps the 100 miles range the computer states is if the battery was fully depleted. The 45mile range may be the range remaining before you hit “buffer zone” for battery protection.

Quite right. Sooner or later that’s all you will get on the scheme and it will be a matter of take it or leave it. A reason why you don’t want one like “I’ll need more mile’s should I need to get some where in an emergency” Not simply saying they are “crap” with a load of random bull.

cold day and it shows in figures tbh. heating was needed but even with it off on second run it was sucking juice…  above freezing too but guessing battery is very cold.
