BrydoStick your post code in the box and see how close/far you are from a charger.

MattCI wouldn’t rely on that map as the nearest charger to me according to it doesn’t exist at all……
November 6, 2018 at 12:34 am #64445
BrydoMatt that’s a pity, I have five within a mile of me and they are all there so maybe you have been unlucky. Are there any near you that are actually there and if so how far away from you are they.
November 6, 2018 at 8:10 am #64464Waitrose – 2 chargers – Polar – 3 pin (3kW) & Type 2 (7.5kW) – 1 in use – 1 available – 10.3 miles
Next nearest – 11 miles but out of service
Then 13.4 miles – same as chargers as Waitrose but both showing as in use.
I’m obviously not in a good location for public charging, hence why i could only consider a PHEV or EV with a home charger.

BrydoYes Trev a bit of a journey there but at least you know your situation. That’s why I put the link on, there is a lot of misinformation about evs, one being there are no chargers available. You have done it and now you know your actual situation.
I ask everyone who reads this thread to give it a go and report back what your situation actually is.
November 6, 2018 at 10:45 am #644742 charging stations within a mile of me, both restricted, one dual unit at a Renault dealership – only their Zoe’s allowed, demonstrators parked there. One in a primary school car park, no access to the public.
3 in the next town, 11-12 miles away, one at a car repairers, closed to the public (they have the RAC outsourced contract – its probably a requirement to have one). One at the towns sports centre, and one in a Council car park.
Over 25,000 residents in those two towns….looks like we are ready for a totally electric future.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

BrydoCheers Abercol, that’s another poster that would have problems and would need at least another few usable chargers installed before contemplating an EV.
November 6, 2018 at 11:18 am #64477
MattCThis is why my next car is going to be the Toyota C-HR 1.8 Petrol/Hybrid so I don’t have to try and plug it in anywhere.
Hopefully in 3 years the situation will have improved and a) There will be more chargers available and b) a greater choice of EV/PHEV’s available on the scheme as right now the only suitable vehicle for me would be the Outlander but its AP is too high for me at this moment in time.
November 6, 2018 at 11:30 am #64479
BrydoMatt could you stick your postcode into the link and tell us how many and how close the chargers are.
November 6, 2018 at 11:32 am #64480
BrydoThis is not in any way a proper poll of how many EV chargers there are but it gives an indication of what’s available.
November 6, 2018 at 11:49 am #64481Within a 5 mile radius (I wouldn’t travel further for fuel) I have one at a private health club then only 3 more within a 15 mile radius. I anticipate that changing at a considerable rate within the next 6 months.
It will be interesting looking back on this post to see.
November 6, 2018 at 12:13 pm #64485
BrydoSorry Matt i noticed you have already checked your area, you say the nearest one doesnt exist but what else is in your area.
I am just outside Glasgow and there are loads of chargers available, do most of you guys live in rural areas?
November 6, 2018 at 12:23 pm #64488
MattCIf I use the park and ride into Truro the chargers are always full with vehicles that are not even plugged in and that is 6.3 miles away after that its 8.1 miles but they are restricted to employees at a local Gov building.
If I go the other way to St Austell then the first charger is at ASDA and that is 13.8 miles.
So full EV is just not an option for me right now especially with Landlord not allowing a charger to be fitted at the house.
November 6, 2018 at 12:26 pm #64489The local station is our nearest charging point and that is about a three mile round trip. However it is a subscription operated charging point owned and operated by Polar Network. The nearest town has no public use charging points that I’m aware of. Worcester has just three charge points in the city centre. I have space on my drive for three cars to parallel park in front of the house, so I would install a home charger if and when I change to an EV.

BrydoPops you are ideally placed to rent out your charger when you get one. You have the space and you would earn extra money.
November 6, 2018 at 12:46 pm #64492Free 30 min use of the hot tub with every 5th charge! lol
November 6, 2018 at 1:59 pm #64502
BrydoVery good Trev lol
November 6, 2018 at 2:28 pm #64506There are very few near use at present, but I would imagine will improve in the future. We have the ideal setup to install a charger, our daughter has her own drive and garage so ideal to recharge, all our trips are local, except when we tow the caravan (this is when we are going to use a lot of fuel) when we get there we can charge up on site (electric is covered in the site fees) so basically free electric whilst on holiday which will offset the high fuel consumption when towing.
For us we are looking forward, however, it a shame the government is cutting the solar energy grants in March 2019, and the cutting of the PHEV grants, hopefully the PHEV/EV including the Mitsubishi are still on the scheme in the future.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
November 6, 2018 at 2:35 pm #64507In my very rural part of North Yorkshire:
Closest: 16.6 miles (a single one – not currently in service, at a Nissan dealers for their customer use only).
Next Closest: 20.6 miles (dual one in use – in a hospital car park).
Third Closest: 31.0 miles – in a hotel car park (for guest use).
The closest and second closest are in opposite directions, east and west with the third further north. Hence if getting to one to find it in use or out of order, it is not really feasible to use the next nearest!
I don’t think I will be converting to an EV any time soon.
Mike

GarysNearest to us is the station but usually either parked up ( stupidly the parking bays are not for sole use by people charging but by season ticket holders) i expect that will change soon – or thete are either a porsche or tesla parked in them charging its right by the taxi rank and i know a few who let me know whats about – i have never seen them or a red leaf – that i have seen
They apparently park and commute so i guess in use all day
In have a phev and as we are 5 mins from said station have condidered a fee to park and charge for all day – thinking possibly £15 as parking at the station is now £8 a day – slightly cheaper if paying for a season ticket but not decided yet
November 6, 2018 at 3:12 pm #64513
BrydoNo mike I agree that would be a charge too far. Don’t know if you recall but I thought I had came up with a unique idea about renting out your house charger when not using it yourself. I think you can search for people who do this, on the original link, as for people in your situation this would be a possible solution, assuming you can’t have a home charger.
The thing that has struck me by the replies to this thread is that much more needs to be done to make access to chargers much easier, especially in rural and semi rural areas.

Littledave4 in Bognor Regis, 2 of which are at a Nissan dealer, population approv 70,000.
November 6, 2018 at 3:31 pm #64517
Suzy10 miles away is my closest, so a plug in car is not even on my radar (I don’t have a drive).
November 6, 2018 at 3:40 pm #64518
BrydoGarys we have two at our local train station and they are filled with the same two cars everyday. Parking is free up here, can’t believe your charged to park at a train station, shocking!
November 6, 2018 at 3:41 pm #64519My nearest is at the City of Bristol College 1.3 miles away but if I had a EV car I couldn’t imagine for a minute going there just to charge a car, but then I could pop in and learn something while I’m at it. ?
November 6, 2018 at 3:47 pm #64520
BrydoI wonder if the various councils would look favourably on installing road side chargers for those with disabilities, whether it be a lamppost charger or a stand alone charger. They can apply for grants from the government to cover some of the costs for these. So if you are ever considering an EV contact your local council first.
