Hi all
If you get a hire car and shortly after getting it you get the no start possible after 1000 miles add adblue. Do you think it’s reasonable to add it yourself?
I’m thinking hang on I got the car with a full tank of diesel but it was clearly low on adblue already.
It’s not exactly cheap to buy £14 for 5 litres on top of diesel.
Just curious what others opinions are? I already put 5 litres in and it barely touched it, added about 300 miles I’m not adding more for now as hopefully I can limp thru and stay under 1000 miles or so. Hopefully I can keep the mileage low and hibernate until my car arrives.

Just my opinion: I would add it myself. Not worth the hassle of trying to get Motability or the hire company involved.
You can also buy it for far less than £14 for 5 litres. Just check out the discount retailers like Home Bargains, B&M Bargains etc, think I’ve seen it at around £8.50.

I’m well aware you can get it cheaper if you’re near somewhere selling that cheap
January 17, 2024 at 4:36 pm #255553Like I said I have put 5 litres in it made little difference light is still on.
Just think when you get a tatty hire car with scratched glass, dents all over and scratched paint plus the service soon warning is on that combined with the adblue is just really shabby.
I wasn’t asking so much about whether I should just do it I was more curious about people’s opinions on the matter. given how much they screw you over on as many little things as possible
Think I’ll query it over the service light etc and see if they want it back

I needed 15 litres and home bargains was the cheapest I could find, marked up at £5.99 for 5 litres but as a bonus it went through the till at £4.99. Chuffed.

No, you asked whether it’s reasonable that you should have to add Adblue yourself. It is.
As to the tatty hire car, yes send it back, I guess you didn’t have chance to inspect it before you accepted it.

I would have almost certainly contacted Motability about the condition of the hire car, so they were aware of the condition/damage of the hire car, ensuring you don’t get blamed for any of it!
January 17, 2024 at 7:14 pm #255580The part of me that holds open doors for others would refill it.
The part of me that’s dealt with hire companies before would reject it right now and insist they collect it from your drive ?
Then start charging storage!

For those interested Motability had to go check but Europcar said pop by their branch and they’ll fill it for free.
Alternatively keep receipts and Europcar will reimburse. That’s what I’ll do as I’m not doing a 46 mile round trip for them to put adblue in it.
I wish Motability would look on Google maps before using phrases like pop in or call in when you’re passing 23 miles each way on rural roads.
Hey Motability the branch is at an airport, if I’m “passing” the last thing I’m worrying about is my hire car more like my passport, swimwear and sun tan cream ?
As for servicing apparently for long term hires they’ll come and service the cars at your address. Well they won’t be here cos my drives on a slope so good luck with that but maybe they can pop up the road and do it instead. Maybe they can do it in front of the miserable old cow who keeps making complaints about us and upset her 😮 lol
Hopefully that might help someone else in the future

January 19, 2024 at 5:07 pm #255801Oh don’t get me started on the evil old cow.
Shortly after moving in they complained about an outside light shining in the bedroom window, they live best part of 750 yards away and the light is angled down has a hedge between us and them and was already there. I invited the council guy to come out he took one look and said nah.
3 complaints to our housing association none of which have gone anywhere.
She now has 3 police warnings and been told she’s not to even look at me.
They were out in the snow few years ago with the grandchildren and was just swearing non stop at us as we walked home.
She harassed us on Facebook groups too, didn’t like it when it was pointed out it was a breach of the wireless communication act lol.
Her latest stunt was to cycle down the middle of the road to annoy me then swerve like she was moving over then pull out again obviously hoping I’d got her or something (she didn’t see the dashcam lol) this from someone in the 70s. I just remind myself she’ll be dead before me…. Well hopefully lol
January 20, 2024 at 8:02 pm #255873I too have a Courtesy car which needed ad-blue as soon as I collected it from Enterprise.
I see it as a consumable much like adding fuel, and I’ll be returning it at roughly the level it was at. That’s the rule with fuel, so presume likewise for ad-blue.
The car needed new tyres from the get go too, as metal was exposed on one tyre & a slow puncture on another. Took it to Kwik Fit, and they changed all 4, along with tracking. They said it would have cost £1200 had I been a paying customer.
