I’ve been my mums designated driver for a long time, I’ve always paid the AP as I worked, I’ve now been off work for 18 months with long covid and am now on universal credit, I have to use a wheelchair as I’ve developed fibro myalgia and am not always mobile, my mums needs have also changed, as well as severe dementia and severe arthritis she has developed other conditions which also require her to use a wheel chair as she struggles to walk, she can’t get in and out if standard cars as they’re too low but she manages OK with the tiguan allspace as its high off the ground and she can just slide in without being in pain, bit long winded I know but my question is, I can’t afford the deposit to get same car again as now on universal credit so would I qualify for help with the AP?,

As far as I know, the grants team work on a case-by-case basis so you’d be better off just giving them a call, telling them your circumstances and they will advise you from there – https://www.motability.org.uk/charitable-grants/

If it’s your mums DLA / PIP I think it would be based on her income, though your needs as the driver should also be taken into account.

if the car is in your mums name and youre just a nominated driver its your mums circumstances and financials that will determine if you qualify for a grant. best bet is to give them a ring.

Also bear in mind, if your mum does qualify for a grant she may not get the car she finds most suitable.

They will assess her (and your) needs and give her a shortlist of cars they are willing to fund. Whatever car you have your eye on is rarely on that list.

If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

Pay prticular attention when you fill out the application form if you ask for a grant.

I agree with Wardy, although  you can top up what they offer by 50%. There’s also the option of extending your current lease to 5yrs if you haven’t already done so. Though I’m not a fan of extending myself 🙂

One thing to consider is keep your allspace on extension until 5 years instead of 3

Thanks everyone, I’ve spoke to motability and decided to extend my allspace to 5 years.
