      Hi All,
A question i dont know if anyone can help with it . my son (29years old) gets PIP/Mobility . he currently lives with us and my wife is down as the appointed person that gets the mobility payment/car for him. its been that way for many years. we are getting older now and struggle more to provide him the care he needs, he is not physically impaired at all but needs someone with him 24/7 to make sure he keeps safe as he has no real speech and little to no idea of danger etc.  In the next 12 months he will be moving into residential care if we can find a good place. At that time we expected that along with all his benefits his mobility award would also be take off us and go to his residential placement.  We would still need a car to visit him and take him out and about so we decided not to renew the mobility car and to take the money and use that to run a small car that we bought to replace the mobility car, the thinking was that these payments will help us with the purchase of the car while they continue or we would could suddenly be left carless and  having the find the full cost of a car when he leaves us and so we can still take him out and about then.

i have since been told that since he will not need nursing care by the NHS we would be able to keep the mobility award to let us visit and take him out. does anyone know if thats the normally way things work?

if so would we have a choice of taking a car or just continuing with the payments to fund the car we have now bought? or would it be take a mobility car or lose the award?

hope someone else has been there and  can advise .

      Thanks

Have a look here it should shed some light on what you are looking for

Do I still get PIP in a care home?

Tricky one because the decision also depends on whether your son may need the mobility part of PIP for other expenses, for example he may make use of it to enable him to pay for activities, days out (which you may well provide yourselves) that type of thing or indeed to fill the gap left because he will lose the daily living payment. (its far from certain he will lose daily living but can be complicated).

I would say sit down and work out finances before committing the whole of the mobility payment to a car.

Hopefully there will be some more sound advice with what the best way to go is, and maybe some experience from people who have been in the same position.

Have you looked at any different routes, such as the possibility of your son getting a Personal Budget or Direct Payments to provide for his round the clock needs?
