GWM Ora 03 (Slightly Off Topic)

I appreciate GWM Ora 03 is not on the scheme at the moment and my question may be off topic.

My kid wants to spend £1,500 and purchase 6 years old car with 80K miles on the clock as her first vehicle. My concern there are high chances that type of a car will hit the garage at least once in a year and was thinking instead to  lease the likes of Ora: there are good deals for 3 years now for £200 pcm and I have a wall charger at home.

Does anyone have an experience with the car itself and / or GWM dealers and can share from their experience, please?

Apart from funky dunky Ora, an ICE 6 years old 80k miles, with serice history, will have plenty of life left in it. Whats the insurance on the Ora, compared to say a newer ICE (e.g used mg hybrid+)

We agreed I don’t pay for the insurance, so it is not my problem 🙂 The likes of ORA I can get on lease very cheap nowadays. The ICE – I don’t know how trustworthy the service history is. This is one of the cheapest options she sent me. Plus the likes of Ora in my mind are much more safe, as they offer cameras, lane control etc.

There are same type of deals now on Ford Puma E, Citroen E-C3 etc.

I wouldn’t fancy my chances of being in an accident with an 8 year old C1.  If your daughter is ok with the monthly payments I’d do that.  The C1 will require more maintenance on a monthly basis against a new car with manufacturers warranty.

Before i go on a rant on how stupid that comment is..

Who is paying the insurance on that brand new 170hp EV? Because if it’s your daughter, then man, sorry to say, but clearly you should leave financial decisions of any kind to her.

PS: the Ora is north of £6000 per annum in insurance for a beginner female driver (with Admiral). And that’s with my address used, in a small village in wales (where insurance is cheaper than in bigger english cities). For the base model Ora, too. You can replace every single part and body panel on that C1 for the money she’d have to pay for three months of insurance on the Ora.

For reference, the Ora is in a higher insurance group than a 2025 Polo GTI.

edit: also funny to suggest that a C1 is less safe than a 170hp car. I can tell you that you won’t get yourself into trouble in a C1, you very much can with 170hp. If you’re so concerned with your daughters safety (as you should), then double her budget and look at an around 2012 Polo.

You do rant on. The quote from Admiral with tracker installed for her in our area (South East of England) is below £2,000.

Yeah, how much is the excess?

                    edit:

Just for reference, she pays insurance, but you pay for the Ora, or is that also her responsibility?

Check out the owners forums, the Ora has not had a blemish free introduction. Issues with infotainment, chargers & software. Not brilliant build quality.

Also test drive one yourself, especially with all of the safety aids you are keen on turned on. Many Chinese cars are not very good at lane keep assist, either bouncing between lanes or veering off to one side – Bjorn Nyland (he’s on you tube) is a good source of objective reviews on this sort of thing and other issues like charging times etc as he does long distance tests.

Not trying to put you off at all, just making sure you go in with your eyes open. Yes, it’s better than a clapped out C1, but so are a great many other cars out there for the same or less cash.

I agree with what you are trying to do, we did the same with our son some years back. Convinced him to get a new Citigo after his test, it was a brilliant first car and he had 4 years & over 50,000 trouble free miles out of it, rather than a clapped out £1500 banger (especially given his daily 52 mile commute to his work).

In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

@Rene  it was only a wee rant you had but 👏👏 you were spot on 😂😂😂

Funny how 6 year old cars… (that’s 2019 😱) with 80k miles are likely to be unsafe, knackered & needing big repairs from a garage every year 😂😂

Personally I’d buy the £1,500 car and put the £200pm into an ISA. That way don’t have to get too precious about hitting a kerb or getting a supermarket ding while still getting to grips with driving and once more experienced should have a few quid saved up for a deposit on something newer… but it’s your kids choice and so far I’d say they’re the financial brains of the house by not wanting to get weighed down by unnecessary debt 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, on the subject of the Ora… we looked at one when my wife was after an EV and didn’t find any bad reports 🤞 if you get one it will be fine to do exactly the job it was designed for, provide low cost comfortable transportation 👍

I have to agree with @Abercol over the ORA reviews, noth by journo’s and owners so certainly worth looking on forums and reviews.  Depending on age and whether they are new to driving, a new car isn’t always the best course, if they have recently passed their test and a used car may be the best, one thats perhaps under 5 years old and not a C1 regardless of age. I’m also a great believer, a new driver should learn to drive a car without relying on driving aids and the bing bongs that go with them, can be distracting.

Has it got to be an EV or are they best racking up no claims in a petrol / hybrid and thus saving their money to enjoy themselves or put away to a new car in the future. If you think they need an EV, why not look at a used european one, say around 3yrs old. Not only are they giving them away, but you could help towards the insurance lol

Most cars today up to 10 years old are reliable, but I understand why you would want something newer.
