If it happens then there’s talk that in order to spend your £500 you’ll have to spend some money first, maybe as much as £500. If that’s the case it will only benefit those that already have money to spend.

Am not sure it is the case that you would have to spend 500 first, it would defeat the whole point of stimulating the economy.
The Scottish Govt are to trial an unconditional  basic income for every person in a household, this was before COVID happened.
At best guess because the basic groundwork is already done on this, it would be a development of that trial (which has not happened as yet).

But Westminster are looking at ALL methods of stimulating the economy and the money suggested will just be one of these suggestions.
The  current Westminster Govt run by Boris is a far cry  from the cretins Cameron and Osborne….their ‘Austerity’ really screwed and divided the country.
    Any giveaway will be unconditional.
What COVID really brought home was that the shop assistants, clinicians, transport workers are the MOST important people in the country and the millionaires and billionaires are the LEAST important.

This has been done in other countries in the past. In those countries people were spending the money on food and basic items. This £500 (if it happens) is to stimulate spending in other retail sectors. The £500 spend first was only meant as an example as there are no hard and fast figures available.

And of course David Beckham, Richard Branson, Philip Green etc will also be eligible, as it’s just far too expensive to work out how to make it go to those most in need. 🤔

Yep, to use in supermarket with Terms & Conditions not to be used for alcohol, petrol, diesel or tobacco.😁

Just hope the kids today have well paid jobs in future to pay all this money back, it took us until the end of the last century to pay of the debt from WW2.😢

The money can’t be spent on-line, only in shops and restaurants, etc.  The Government want to restart Retail and Hospitality.

Conundrum: For a vulnerable person (and their family), is £500 worth the risk of catching Covid 19 from a member of the unmasked, mingling masses?

Reading between the lines, I think they also want the streets looking ‘normal’ in newspaper pictures in order to lure back the Tourists.  Britain no longer has a coal or steel industry, our car manufacturing is looking worse by the day, and Finance is/will be relocating en masse to Germany and Holland.  Tourism and Hospitality are pretty much all we had/have left.

For me, NO on very high risk list. I just would not risk it.

It’s best i don’t get started on this subject because there is no easy answer and alot won’t like the answer, The economy has been in trouble well before covid, The debt ceiling just gets raised more and more and all this does is make more people poorer.. Why because the more you give away the more you create which devalues the overall value of the stock, So more has to be borrowed/ created until you cannot afford the repayment and the banks / imf steps in and fleeces us all.. Look at greece, jamaica and others see how well they have faired after the people have to work more for less and what you can buy costs more so you get less of it. a lose, lose situation. Also taxes will be increased and more and more we will be squeezed for every drop of juice until none is left. Huge tax rises was on the cards to pay back the debt, but if they told you we’d all revolt but because of covid they got a good excuse for it. We are all enslaved to the debt they takeout in our names.

I’ll tell you what – Covid 19 is going to be a bloody godsend for Boris: When Brexit Britain goes down the pan he can just say “It isn’t because we crashed our Currency and then trashed our Economy – it’s all because of Covid 19!”

Todays youth have lived without the economy resetting itself, its safe to say a lot of us have lived through these times of boom and bust.
What kept the UK economy gong was the ever increasing rises in house prices.  One of the Tories greatest fears are that the house prices will fall through the floor.

This is very close to happening, a downwards blip in the economy, people lose their jobs and their houses go into negative equity, and they cannot afford the mortgage repayments.  There is a whole generation who have had low mortgage repayments, and a huge amount of debt backed by their house value.
The looming disaster will only benefit the people with a few million in their accounts, not the people struggling to keep their heads above water – even with 3 jobs. The house values will plummet and not recover for a few decades…so many semi detached houses especially in London worth a million? Nope..that is unsustainable.

No £500 – Sunak has squashed that idea.  Instead there will be a very watered down (= far less expensive) draft of ‘min-schemes’: Cuts in Stamp Duty for home buyers; Vouchers toward the cost of getting Cavity wall Insulation (money stolen from existing initiatives); (as I predicted) VAT cut to from 20% to 5% for businesses involved in Hospitality and Tourism; Half price/£10 discount on food and drink at pubs and restaurants Mon – Wed throughout August (which encouraging Tourism again, just by a different name).

Hands up anyone here who will be helped by any of these Schemes.

    Georgie in reality what help is that people buying houses , so the vat cut only applies to businesses involved in Hospitality and Tourism;

£10 of food at pub n restaurants and only in August, the last thing people that are struggling with family are thinging lets go out for a meal we cant afford because the government so kindly giving us £10 off  that will help use.

That is absolutely ridicules, it makes the government look good  and that they are doing something,

the government are not really interested in people that are struggling or are vulnerable

they should pay the three months holiday on mortgages and rent for everyone , not tell them to catch up after three months because if your struggling last thing you need is to add three month arrears to catch up on.
