Hi All
I just got an email from motab offering me an extension. I am tempted to accept it, however, wanted to know if anyone would know if this extension would mean an extension to my current agreement or would it be extended with the new rules?
Thanks

An extension would have to be on your current terms, or it would not be an extension, it would be a new contract.

Wonderful, thanks!
September 8, 2026 at 12:13 am #378767If you don’t mind me asking what car you have, What’s left of the three year term and what mileage is on the car?
September 8, 2026 at 12:41 am #378768And, how long of an extension did they offer?? 🙂
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
September 8, 2026 at 10:37 am #378775I was offered an extension at the weekend. I’m currently driving a Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate with around 15.5k miles and was offered 15 months extension. I’m guessing that the extensions will vary depending on current mileage.
I can order a new car mid September but for the first time in over 25 years I cannot get myself motivated to really search for a replacement. Current AP’s are frightening but are they they going to get worse? Who knows. I feel as if we are being shafted here, crazy AP’s for middle of the road cars.
September 8, 2026 at 12:55 pm #378786Joining the rush to tesla, doesn’t seem so bad now does it?
No exorbitant ap charge, cheaper monthly rates, no maintenance except a pollen filter, yes insurance is to find but with the letter from mb that is reduced as well.
Motability scheme has been a life line in the past undoubtedly, however with the new government disability bashers getting there way it’s become yet another way to bash the disabled.
The scheme has become far to expensive and not fit for purpose.
This is not mentioning the profits made by mb.
Im reaching for my soap box so im going to stop.
However if your contract is an older one and it would appear so, check out your length of contract lease, you might find your lease stipulates your initial is 3 years with a 24 month option.
September 8, 2026 at 5:00 pm #378808BIYT that is what my contract stipulates.
3y + 24m
September 8, 2026 at 7:47 pm #378815Then your lease is for 5 years.
My thoughts are perhaps email the ceo of motability and explain your taking up the lease of 3 years plus 2years as stipulated in there contract.
September 8, 2026 at 8:42 pm #378816@BYIT, can I also ask: my lease was as far as I know, 3 years. On looking at the contract, it also says the following:
DURATION OF HIRE
The Hire Term is for a minimum period of three years starting on the date of delivery of the Vehicle (the
“Minimum Hire Term”), but continuing thereafter until either the expiry of a period of twenty four months
following the Minimum Hire Term (the “Maximum Hire Term”) or the date on which this Agreement is
terminated in accordance with the terms set out in the Contract Hire Terms and Conditions (Ref T&Cs –
09/24)(the “Conditions”), whichever is the earlier.Looking at the terms & conditions for my contract date:
10.1 You are only entitled to use the Scheme Vehicle
for the Hire Term as specified on the front of
the Agreement. The Hire Term shall continue
automatically following the end of the Minimum
Hire Term referred to in this Agreement unless
either you or we have served not less than 60
days’ written notice on the other to terminate this
Agreement on the last day of that Minimum Hire
Term. If no such notice is served, this Agreement
shall, subject to the provisions of Clauses 11 and 12,
terminate upon expiry of the Maximum Hire Term.My 3 years is up in September 2027 and on my online motability account it says my lease ends at 3 years. This is at odds with what is actually in the contract (3+2). I take it they can, at year 3, refuse to let me take those extra 2 years if the mileage is too high for their liking? Its so contradictory and confusing!

@barmyifyouthink (BIYT)Not this old chestnut again! See post onward from:
The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has already judged on a number of cases regarding the ’24 month’ extension clause and found in favour of Motability (other posts hereabouts passim).
In effect the FOS judged that any lease extension over the initial 36 months (or 60 months for WAV’s) is only with the consent of Motability as laid out in the Contract Hire Terms and Conditions. The FOS stated there was no automatic right for the customer to extend, provided Motability had sent the customer the letter they send out at the 3 month point prior to the contract end which in effect gives the necessary notice of termination of the lease.
The full FOS decision is here:
https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/decision/DRN-5711848.pdf
However, in saying that, some folk hereabouts have been successful in negotiating a lease extension directly with Motability by being fairly forceful about what is stated on the ‘Contract Hire Agreement’ (which actually should read in conjunction with the Contract Hire Terms and Conditions).
So it seems the route maybe to keep protestations informal and direct with Motability as opposed to going down the formal FOS complaint route.
Ultimately though, Motability do have the right to not extend the lease or can offer less than the oft quoted 24 months. There is no ‘right’ on the side of the customer.

Says it all really.
September 9, 2026 at 11:47 am #378833BIYT I’ll not be renewing whether allowed to or not. Cars a pain in the a…
Probably have to leave as my current mileage is now 24414 and I’ve 15 months left of current contract. A quick calculation would suggest that on new mileage terms I would be billed about £4360 and that’s being genourus as wee child will go to secondary school which is further away, big child will be in higher ed and is starting a new PT job so a lot more miles. I can’t see any of this being deemed essential so allowed more miles. Quick rough calculation.
Ap average for me (due to get higher) £2300
Sacrificed benefit (will get higher) £12480
Access mileage (will get higher) £4360
Total over 3 years on new contract (yip, again it will be higher) £19140
Sorry slightly of topic. Just a rant about motability and why I would like to tell them to shove it and not take an extension.
September 9, 2026 at 1:36 pm #378841It seems your joining the growing number of people voting with there feet,
Good luck in your future endeavours
September 9, 2026 at 3:09 pm #378843@des Quite understand your frustration. A number of the long term contributors to this forum (myself included) have come to the same conclusion as you and voted with our feet.
Even without excess mileage charges to worry about, the combination of the huge value of benefits sacrificed in order to join the scheme, plus the ludicrously high APs these days for very modest cars, many of us are now choosing to spend our money elsewhere. For higher mileage users such as yourself, the case for bailing out is even stronger.
It’s a shame that things have come to this but, on the bright side, those who shop elsewhere have unlimited choice, with the only limitation being budget!
September 9, 2026 at 3:41 pm #378844I’m leaving the scheme in January too. Ordered a car on my work scheme which is cheaper than on motability and I get a new car every 6 months.

Nice one but, out of interest, why do they change cars every 6 months? That seems like a criminal waste of money!
September 9, 2026 at 7:01 pm #378860I’m leaving the scheme in January too. Ordered a car on my work scheme which is cheaper than on motability and I get a new car every 6 months.
Every 6 months? That seems to be the most expensive way to deal with new cars. They take the maximum hit then sell them? 12 months seems insane but understandable but 6? The only way that works out cheaper is by not the providing peace of mind assurances we enjoy with the scheme.
I'm Autistic, if I say something you find offensive, please let me know, I can guarantee it was unintentional.
I'll try to give my honest opinion but am always open to learning.Mark
September 9, 2026 at 7:27 pm #378862Apparently they don’t lose that much value until after 6 months. They don’t let you keep the cars longer than 8 months to keep residuals up.

I’ll have to pay for insurance and the monthly cost which varies from £200-400 depending on the car but that’s about it. Don’t need to worry about servicing or tyres since the car will go back after 6 months. No deposit or advance payment like a normal lease or motability.
September 10, 2026 at 1:03 am #378896BIYT I don’t really want to leave, but glosguy sums it up well. Except for one thing, and it’s mentioned a few times on the forum but not enough. Motability as a company used to be good to deal with. Understanding, honest, caring? That may be a stretch, but any time I’ve delt with their call staff I’ve had that impression. Except for the e3008 fiasco when they were unhelpful, ignorant and rude. And I believe a few others on here have similar views on dealing with them.
Worry free motoring is definitely something it was, but no longer.
Ah this just popped into my head now. No one ever seemed to question the sacrificed benefits all the years I’ve been on the scheme until recently, when the product (cars) became poor, actually rubbish, and the seller (motability) became crap.
Even this forum has suffered. Remember the days of thread after thread of positivity and people looking forward to their new cars or new quarters with excitement. Now every thread and post including this one is a moan. Except for one, and funny enough it’s regarding a car that’s not even on the scheme, the Tesla.
The only thing that will keep the scheme alive is the fact that some of us are handcuffed to it. Whether that be due to needing WAVs, which are probably impossible for most to fund privately, needing adoptions which again is expensive and maybe not practical on a car that may have to be sold privately sooner or later, or poor credit history for most who became disabled (I’ve personal experience of this).
I’m slowly starting to think that sooner or later people in high positions are going to start looking at the money the company/charity is bringing in and thinking this is wrong. Then looking at the salaries of those running it and thinking it’s worse. And the whole thing will get scrapped. Then maybe for a change it will be them being scrutinised and not us.
Mind it could also be the people who looked at the PPE scandal. Are there many OBEs, MBEs, Dames, lords etc on the board? lol
Edit. Apologies that just ended up a long rant.

September 10, 2026 at 2:03 pm #378915Although their are many MB problems which many of us cannot simply resolve by leaving the scheme, such as the AP’s, which are totally out of hand and out of proportion, leading to unacceptably high MB profits and asserts.
The often unacceptable and unhelpful attitude of MB customer service, who often treat us as scroungers instead of valued customers, who are largely responsible for their good employment conditions and pay.
The attitude of Politicians, the Media and Joe Public, that we are simply parasites, who thrive of the proceeds of the poor hard working tax payer. The biggest MB problem for many of us severely disabled MB customer’s, goes largely unnoticed by the Politicians, the Media. Joe Public, even some of our fellow forum members and especially MB.
But by far the biggest and most important problem for many of us more severely disabled customer’s is that MB has unnecessarily, purposely, consciously and systematically trimmed back and removed far too many of the essentially needed variations and makes of cars, that could meet the very essential, and individually required specifications to meet the full and essential needs of their most disabled customer’s, the very type’s of customer’s that MB was created to assist in the first place.
MB and other’s seem all too happy to claim that MB are meeting the needs of their disabled customer’s, by limiting their needs to fitting into two pigeonholes, AP free cars and WAV’s, neither of which can meet all of the needs of either wheelchair user’s or with other disabilities.
I have leased a MB car since the 1980’s as a Spina Bifida Paraplegic and now also a stroke victim ( also a broken leg in the last week, just as well I bought the lucky white heather), at no time did a WAV meet my full needs and cars (mostly small and basic) with no AP’s, which come no where near meeting my needs.
Which is why I always need a large estate car which comes with a large AP. But every year there are less and less suitable MB cars on their list, which could be a voidable if MB did their job right.
September 10, 2026 at 4:37 pm #378917Having thought about this, I can’t see any reason why motability is still needed,
First off it’s not them that dictate the vat on the sale it’s hmrc.
The insurance is done by direct line or aviva or another main stream company.
Roadside assistance is rac.
The manufacturers could be given an incentive to produce vehicles for disabled customers, after all they get paid for the duration of the lease and the car is returned afterwards.
So only thing missing is the upfront money , that could be managed over the life of the lease.
Just a thought, perhaps disability reps at manufacturers could work all this out over a nice coffee when you go in to get your car ordered.
That way the fat cats get a diet, the government gets it’s money, manufacturers get there sales back people get the cars they can afford .
All we need is confirmation of entitlement
Just a thought
September 13, 2026 at 8:26 pm #379039I received an email today offering a 15-month extension under the same terms, with the added option to make a placement during that timeframe.
