Got a Volvo XC40 On Order?

      Hi

Just a note for anyone who has an XC40 on order.

I collected mine three weeks ago, so far okay apart from the ridiculously aggressive auto braking when reversing which is so hard it has hurt my neck and back twice.  I have turned it off but this morning it decided to reactivate!  Coincidently this morning the infotainment system also decided to go into meltdown and take Google with it.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting is I happened to look on the Volvo website last week to see that the Plus edition now has Pilot Assist.  I have the buttons on my steering wheel but they don’t seem to do anything so I’ve just had a chat with Volvo customer services to be told my model is the MY25 and doesn’t have it but that the My26 does.  So within three weeks of taking delivery of a car I waited four months for it is lacking a feature that would’ve been incredibly useful (Pilot Assist includes adaptive cruise control) and is apparently an outdated model.  So, if you have one on order, before taking collection, check with your dealer that they are giving you the MY26 and not offloading the My25.

Interesting- we pick ours up this Friday. It was ordered in Dec. I suspect it will be like yours the MY25 model.

On a separate point the salesman told me that he has to do 20 Motability handovers this week in just this single dealership.

Bummer that the cars hand over is so close to an updated model. Usually the outgoing models are discounted to enable stock to shift.

I couldn’t be without ACC – sorry to rub it in!

The car has all the Pilot Assist hardware on board but it is switched off via software. Bit tight of Volvo to not switch it on for those with late 2024 cars onwards.

I think a few car makers do similar. You need to pay them to have it turned on. Maybe ask the garage if this is an option??

I did speak to Volvo customer services who said that there would be a software update available at some point but she didn’t know when or how much it would be.  It’s ridiculous that the car has all the necessary tech but they just don’t bother to turn it on!

My dealer seemed to be doing well with Motability customers as well.  Hopefully you’ll get lucky and they’ll give you the MY26.  Just be wary of the over enthusiastic auto braking when you’re in reverse.  It’s so violent that when it’s gone off I’ve been convinced I’ve hit something despite being nowhere close to anything, yesterday I was a good 4 feet away from the barrier in the car park when it went off and it really jolts your back, it even hurt my peak of fitness son!

So one orders a car which didn’t have pilot included as standard when they ordered it, but somehow you expect to receive it and somehow your upset. You’ve received t exactly what you ordered. I’ve personally discounted the XC40 and other Volvos over the years as Pilot or ACC didn’t come as standard and often was as much as £1500 extra. Many car manufactures are adopting these methods as the 2nd owner may pay to activate it and that’s an attractive model to them.

As for reversing I have a ex30 and you can turn off the RAB if needed. which I need to do to get it onto my real tight offroad parking spot. I don’t suffer such issues as usually, when I do reverse. I just let the car creep and cover the brake pedal, maybe that will help the such abrupt stopping of the safety system, you are experiencing.

Thanks @Ruby2002 – good advice on the reverse auto braking. My wife suffers from a bad back and being jolted in a car is painful for her- this was one of the reasons we got a bigger safer car.  Will have to be careful when reversing.

The salesman said today the MY26 car won’t be coming till later this year so I have got the MY25. Hopefully the software update will be free for ACC to be turned on. If not, I’ll do without it.

I hope you like the car.  I have to be honest I was a bit apprehensive as I had a Volvo years ago and wasn’t a huge fan but the XC40 was such a good deal.  Have to say that I actually really like it, it’s a great drive and I love the little removable bin, I’ve never had a car that’s so tidy!

the mpg is the main drawback for me but on wpms the ap is good so i would need to break out the calculator to see if theres extra cost there. it will be interesting to see whats around in a years time as i will be restricted to ice or hybrid.

Did a 30 mile journey yesterday in our new XC40 and averaged 38.9mpg. I expected better actually as I was driving gently. I still need to figure the car out and how to eke the most out of the hybrid drivetrain.

I knew the mileage the car gives was its weak point but overall the car seems to be excellent as an initial impression so we are happy with the choice we made especially taking into account the AP.

There is talk of a brand new model next year but I suspect the AP will be a lot more. Time will tell.

I’m averaging between 35mpg and 40mpg but I live the country where the lowest speeds on the majority of roads I drive on are 40mph and I’m rarely in traffic.  I had a 2.0l X1 before the Volvo which averaged 33mpg so the Volvo is slightly better for fuel economy.

If your wife has a bad back then the reversing issues will be the very least of your problems. The XC40 has the worst suspension of any car I can remember owning. It bounces all over the place on uneven roads and the lateral wobbling does my back in no end.

Not noticed this at all actually. Was quite impressed with ride quality, especially in front seats when we test drove the car a couple of times before committing.

Rear seats I am less impressed with but we’ve had the car for a week and so far so good on the whole.
