Went to order a Volvo C40 last March. Was told it would be 3 weeks if they had one in, or 6 months if it had to be ordered. Kept getting an email from Motability saying my car was on order and there was nothing to be done. Every other Friday around 3-4pm the same email came in.

10 months have now passed so I thought I’d better call my Volvo dealership.

Guess what? they have no record of a car ever being ordered yet they knew who I was and what I had ordered.

I called Motability who then phoned the dealership and I waited on hold. Motability then told me that a car was available but it was not the one I had ordered. Wrong colour. Said to be the last one available in the country. I have refused it and asked them to build me the car I have ordered. That’s the stage I am at.

I don’t hold out much hope.

The C40 is now the EC40 and this seems to be some sort of get out of jail free card for them.

According to Motability what has happened is that last January Volvo had a lot of C40’s they could not shift so gave Motability a good deal.

Maybe they have done you a favour, im due to hand back my XC40 and i can’t wait, the faults are getting ridiculous and my local dealer is useless. My MPG over the last 4 years has been 18-20 round town and 28-30 on the motorway and it’s a hybrid………..

If you were to get the NCB too see if Motability will still honour that on a new order as you had an order in already.

Sadly, this is yet another of countless examples on this forum where people trust that because a car shows as ‘ordered’ on the Motability system it has been. It is always essential to get a manufacturer tracker number from a dealer so that you can check yourself that the car has actually been ordered.

Very often, dealerships will input the details on the Motability system (which makes it show that it’s been ordered) when in reality they cannot place the order until a month (or several months) later when a manufacturer build slot opens up. They will never tell you this unless you specifically ask.

If a dealership won’t give you a tracker number that you can check yourself with the manufacturer, you can rest assured that the car hasn’t been ordered.

            Bit of an update.

They have offered a second C40 that is a cancelled order but again it is in the same colour I don’t want.

They have now gone from saying that it was never ordered to……It was ordered but Motability threw Volvo off the scheme for a few weeks last year and that cancelled the order.

Still waiting and hoping they come up with the car we ordered.

If America Taxes the EU soon I can imagine that a lot of orders will be cancelled.

I ordered my XC40 in September and took delivery 10 days later. Not everyone has a long wait.

                Yeah, for a stock vehicle.

This is about factory orders, and it very much isn’t the first time i’ve read of “cancelled” orders from Volvo. You’ll not get a factory order in 10 days, with any manufacturer. Literally impossible.

                Next: we'll see what's available in 2028.

I Just picked up my EX30 SMER Ultra on Friday.

Ordered it on the 29th of Oct. Volvo site states 4 to 5 months wait for the SMER ultra. There wasn’t any in the UK, in stock. Even to buy privately. Lot’s of twin motor or plus trims available, but they are not currently available via the scheme.

The dealer already had some factory orders placed, so limited colours and trim combo’s to choose from, to get the car 1 to 2 months earlier. I got the trim that came with the colour of car I wanted, but if one had been in the trim I did want. I likely would of gone with that colour.

At the beginning of December I called them for an update, all it said was dispatched and that the car was built on the 18th of November. EX30 is currently made in China. 7th of Feb I picked it up.. Latest software 1.5 is installed. Just over 3 months.

My account did say dealer has ordered the car, well I knew they had and allocated it to me on their system that day. So I didn’t need anymore than that.

So all in all it was in the time frame I expected. Yes I would of liked one sooner and with a different interior and as I’ve had the charger installed since November. It would of been nice.

I did call the dealer at the beginning of every month after for updates which they were happy to give me.

I’m a bit baffled by why, one would leave it 10 months to then contact them. If I hadn’t heard from them after the 3 / 4 weeks, I’d have called them and asked for an update. Then, if told it would be 6 months. I’d contact them for updates on that.

I have never expected them to call me with updates, only when the car actually arrives. Even when buying privately.

Sad as it is, it is what it is… You cannot get a car they are not making anymore, So have two options, get it in the colour offered or look at getting something else I guess and call that dealer for updates, so this doesn’t happen again and people can learn a lesson from this situation you find yourself in.

As ELTel says, you cannot get a car that they aren’t making any more. But it sounds to me like you have a perfect case for twisting their arm to get some sort of concession from them for keeping you hanging, especially as Motability sent you a holding email every fortnight. Keep banging their heads together and asking both parties what they are going to do for you to sort out a mess that is no fault of your own!

I’ve read about this happening for several different manufacturers though, its not exclusively a Volvo thing.

My 2022 XC40 1.5 Hybrid INSCRIPTION PRO T5 RECHARGE is due to go back, and I’m glad! Nothing but poor service from Volvo and issues that would keep me far away from another in the future! Electrics, suspension, OTA software plus much more…

I am due to hand my XC40 T5 Recharge Inscription Pro at the end of March/ early April. The car itself has generally been reliable apart from needing a small battery replaced. The software on the SENSUS system is a royal pain in the backside. The car preheating is tempramental and all in all leaves me frustrated. It is a real shame because apart from the software the rest is superb. I am sure if you get a Google based infotainment system that replaced the earlier SENSUS it will be better.

It’s been about 6 weeks since we’re realised the car hadn’t been ordered.

But we waited to see if the EC40 came on the scheme so we could transfer to that, and it hasn’t so today I cancelled.

I am not bitter, I just don’t care, but I haven’t got a single good word to say about my Volvo experience.

Went to VW and got an ID4 that they took out of the showroom for me and I was on the road in 2 weeks.
