The government will announce that the plug-in car grant will drop from £3,000 to £2,500 from today after a surge in demand for electric vehicles put massive strain on the scheme.

At this rate it’ll be zero by the time we are due to renew in 2023

Selenium greyMarch 18, 2021 at 7:47 am #142803No surprise there Really. Encourage folk to go green then cut the grant because there has been a massive take up of EV’s.

TimMore manufacturers have pledged to go ICE free and more electric vehicles appear every quarter. I’d argue the tipping point has passed and encouragement for uptake in the forms of grants is no longer required.
March 18, 2021 at 8:35 am #142806The idea is that EV batteries have been getting cheaper each year & that’s predicted to continue into the future.

Add to that the appreciation of the £ over the last few months & EV costs are dropping. The general break even point that gets bandied about where an EV reaches parity with a fossil is 2024, & that’s just 3 years away. Once that point is reached, unless a substantially cheaper technology arrives, then EVs will simply be cheaper to buy new & run than fossil fueled vehicles, perhaps they already are for those who generate a significant amount of solar electricity or use off-peak tariffs for their electricity & can charge at home.
The question now is no longer “should I consider buying an EV”, it is “how much range will this year’s EVs give me” and as ranges generally increase & choices expand it’s looking like EVs will be the natural choice before very long.
The hope now is that larger EVs will start arriving on the scheme over the next couple of years so that we can get wheelchairs into them easily.
For those who haven’t driven an EV yet, I’d encourage you to go “have a play” when the situation improves with regard to lockdowns, I think you will be a little shocked by the low speed performance of EVs, forget trying to burn one off away from the traffic lights unless you’ve got some really serious HP. The young guy with the baked bean can exhausts on a small petrol hatch simply looks like the fossil he is from a century ago.

Clipped wingsI suspect the scheme will be affected more by the ceiling of the grant reduced from£50k to £35k. APs certain to be higher £35k+. Kiss the Tesla 3 and others good bye, I fear.

IanIn view of this I bet motability will have to review the EV cars on the scheme or the ones that we’re coming on in Q2. Meaning more AP or removing them.

Lets get OrganisedAp up by £500 would be a simple idea no?
March 18, 2021 at 12:04 pm #142847
TimWhy would we automatically face £500 more of an AP? Perhaps residuals are £500 more now after 3 years. I don’t like the easy excuse to hike up AP’s whenever possible.
March 18, 2021 at 12:14 pm #142848
Lets get OrganisedIts logical if the government have reduced the grant by £500 if you were motability and you had spent time working out all the prices and then this new directive is introduced what would you do that is quick minimal effort and fair
March 18, 2021 at 12:24 pm #142852Having worked in finance all my working like, statistically, it is likely we will see both a drop in available cars and higher AP´s. The real factor is the rrp limit reduction from 50k to 35k for cars which will qualify. Those under 35k will still be viable but those over 35k, a good chunk of the available cars currently on the scheme, it will be a different story. There will be a black hole of 3k to fill, or find from somewhere. Well, Q2 is just 2 weeks away so not long to wait.
March 18, 2021 at 12:26 pm #142853Although this was announced today, we can be sure the motor industry and therefore Motability were advised it was coming in advance. Like fwippers I expect it will be reflected in the Q2 offers.
March 18, 2021 at 2:22 pm #142862More damaging to the Scheme is the fact that the grant cap has been reduced from £50k to £35k.
March 18, 2021 at 2:53 pm #142865It’s damaging to the UK sales of EVs in general, of course.
