First Motability Scheme Car (and first actual car)

Hi, sorry if this is not allowed. I had some queries regarding the scheme and the process of getting the car as it will be not only the first Motability car, but the first car we will have ever had.

Myself and partner (named driver) viewed and ordered a PEUGEOT 2008 1.2 PureTech 130 GT 5dr EAT8 in either Black or Selenium Gray with no added extras following a test drive.

Fortunately, due to my condition, no adjustments needed to be made to the vehicle so an approximate wait time was between 2 weeks and 3 months which I sort of expected.

The gentleman in the dealership mentioned that if they have any in stock across the UK, they may be able to get one sooner than the 3 month period.

I’d just like to set my expectations clear, has anybody had any luck recently with in stock vehicles? Or is it more likely to be the 3 month wait (or longer, hopefully not).

What is the process if they do have an in stock vehicle? They were unable to check yesterday as their systems had been down for 2 weeks. Presumably they’ll just have one driven from another showroom?

I appreciate these are all questions I should have asked when we viewed the car.

      Many Thanks

A stock vehicle will get transported from another dealer or from the port, which means you get them alot quicker however, I find it odd a dealers system has been down for 2 weeks!

If you don’t mind telling us what car your thinking of having?

I don’t know whereabouts in the country you are, but if you look at post #297760 in the Motability Deals and Special Offers thread:

          Motability Deals And Offers – Q2 2024 (1st April 2024 to 30th June 2024)

There is a Peugeot dealer in South Yorkshire claiming to have some petrol 2008 GT autos in stock and is willing to forego the £399 AP (as well as give £60 travelling costs or a night in a hotel when you order the vehicle). Also in that thread, the Peugeot dealer in York is often amenable to give a discount on stock vehicles.

So it appears there maybe some in stock at different dealer groups if you are prepared to travel. They may/may not have your exact colour, but with stock vehicles you take the chance to get the vehicle quicker.

This may sound like a stupid question, but if (by sheer luck) it is available in another dealership, does it matter if they’re not part of the same group? I’d assume it does as they operate as separate entities thus different targets to meet?

It was ordered in Ormskirk through Chorley Group for reference. I’m expecting the wait time to be 3 months (or longer) but just curious about how it all works.

I’ve not had an order number or VIN obviously, but I can see that it had been ordered same day through the Motability account page.

To your first question, yes it does matter,  particularly if a different dealer group.

Dealerships inside the same group may be amenable to transfer stock, but that is only a ‘may’. They may not want the hassle (and cost) of transferring vehicles between branches, particularly if the losing dealer thinksthey can sell the vehicle themselves and claim the bonuses for selling it.

The ‘order’ showing on the Motability website is not an order for the vehicle. It is the dealership basically signalling to Motability that you are making an order for a particular vehicle. .

The dealership then actually orders (in the normal sense of ordering) your vehicle from the manufacturer on their own systems.  Dealerships sometimes do not submit these orders until it is an optimal time for them (i.e. if it is better to hold it to the following month to hit bonuses next month if they have already achieved their bonus for the current month).

If you can find a better deal elsewhere, or a car in stock at another dealership, you can cancel your order and go to another dealership.

Great, thanks for all the helpful information BigDave.

Just now had a reservation email from Peugeot with an anticipated collection date between 09/06/2025 and 04/08/2025 which is slightly later than the 3 months but another few months won’t hurt!

Hopefully I’ll be given an order number at some point to track against to get some better updates as the reservation reference doesn’t currently link to anything (that I can see).

I ordered car in August 2024 with an expectation of delivery of up to 9 months. I got an earlier delivery at end of November 2024 after dealer had a cancellation. (Unfortunately incompetent fitter took nearly 3 months to fit adaptations.)

                    blah, blah, blah
