Hi, I finally picked up my MB EV last week, it took nearly 6 months but it’s here now. Although I’ve not driven for 8 years and it’s got hand controls which I have used before but driving it back from the dealership through country lanes is not an experience I want to go through again. But I’m getting to grips with it more now and learning to better judge the width and length and gadgetry, it’s a steep learning curve.
I’ve been using public transport for the past number of years and wasn’t sure whether getting a car was the right decision for me, I worried about whether I would regret it. But I’m loving the car, the adaptions and the freedom it gives me. It’s opened up a whole new world for me. Previously I could only go places the buses went.
Anyhow I want to sign up to an EV tariff. I’m out of a fixed contract with my current energy supplier so am free to move.. But I don’t know where to go? I’m not that anal about being on the absolute lowest tariff but no-one wants to pay more than you have to.
Any suggestions?
Sorry if this is a bit of boring question and I know there are forum threads here about EV tariffs but the more I read the more confused I get.

Welcome to EV motoring. I made the switch over 2yrs ago and save so much on fuel.
Am with Octopus Intelligent Go – I find works seamlessly with my Ohme charger which is fitted to my home. Still the cheapest charging in the UK so they say.
From 1st May they charge me 6.9p/kWh so it costs £3.45 for 50kWh charge giving a range of 195 miles.
2024 - KIA EV6 GT Line AWD
2019 - 2024 BMW X1 2.0d X Drive Sport Auto
2017 -2019 Audi Q3 2.0d Quattro Sport Line Plus
2005 - 2017 Honda CRV Exec 2.0dMay 4, 2026 at 9:56 am #354654As tvs said Ohme works really well with octopus intelligent go and only £3-£4 to change you just switch over to Octopus, once you have switched over your put onto their standard tariff called flexible, the day your switch is completed just ask them to switch you to otopus intelligent go
this will give you off peak charging of around 5-7p off peak every night 23:30-05:30 it also will give you extra slots currently during the daytime also if needed.
The main benefit is when your EV is charging the whole house benefits from off peak so if you do as much of your energy consumption while the EV is charging you will reduce the house bill (for example tumble dryer or washing machine/dishwasher etc)
good luck you won’t look back especially with current petrol/diesel prices

May 4, 2026 at 4:38 pm #354663Thank you all. I will explore at all three mentioned to see which works best for me. But at the moment I’m leaning towards IOG due to it integrating well with the Ohme Home Pro charger.

Something to should consider imo and why you may need to ignore some other peoples costs/prices
Intelligent Octopus Go prices are regional. ( they forgot to mention that)
While the off-peak rate (typically 8p/kWh as of March 2026) is consistent, peak rates and standing charges vary based on one of the 14 UK distribution network operator (DNO) regions.
You can check specific rates for your postcode
These off peak deals imo are ok if doing a lot of miles PA and it all comes down to individual family size/POST CODE area/miles pa
If you example you have a family of say 4 or more your peak usage will be high
So for example using my post code the peak costs of IOG main usage) is 32.72p / kWh Which is a whopping 8P kwh dearer that my BG ANYTIME STANDARD VARIABLE TARIFF ( Standing charger 49.7p day) as my miles are low 5500 PA and a family of 4 it’s a no go for me ( BG 5 HRS HALF PRICE EVERY SUNDAY so top up EV then for the week)
Bottom line is do your own sums based on last years usage and then see if it works for you
POST CODE COST CHECKER
May 4, 2026 at 7:02 pm #354669Just tried that Intelligent Octopus rate checker.
Came out Day rate 31.02kwh, I’m currently paying 21.45kwh with Octopus.
Standing charge 57.05 a day, I’m currently paying 52.04 a day with Octopus.
Haven’t got the Elec car yet (Enyaq 85x sportline Maxx) but looking at these figures I’d be better staying on my current rate! Family of four and I only do around 6k miles PA.
I’m guessing I’d only need to charge once every 3 to 4 weeks to 80% costing around £14. I put £40 petrol in a month so I’d save. (Hopefully my calculations are fairly accurate?)

May 6, 2026 at 9:54 am #355348Yup its the same for me with the new Intelligent Octopus Go 12m.
The old IOG, is being phased out, and the new one in.
Everyone will be moved to the flexible option then you sign up for the neW IOG 12M.
But that is the current offer from Octopus, 8p/ kwhr between 11.30pm and 5.30.
May 6, 2026 at 2:01 pm #355521We are with eon next ev drive smart tariff and ours is only 6p per kwh. Our 50 kw battery cost us £3 and drive 200 miles in a good day.

The difference between 6p and 8p is not much. You got to look at the standing charge as well.
But energy costs are high with the Gulf war. A lot of energy providers will be raising prices as well.
May 7, 2026 at 7:52 am #358269Can I ask if you use a lot of electricity between 4pm and 7pm?
If not then really consider EDF as they give you free electricity on Sundays (up to 16 hours) if you keep the usage between 4-7pm at an absolute minimum.
If you do use a lot but are able to change your habits then that works as well.

May 7, 2026 at 8:01 am #358272I looked at the other suppliers but for me EDF was the cheapest and I benefit (usually) from the free electric on Sundays.

I had a look at the EDF one and it was appalling. For EV charging at night its a fixed price of £7.
I,ve never charged more than £4.36 and that is using max time on IOG.
Then you have to change your lifestyle to use electricity on a Sunday??
I currently pay £80/month dual fuel, it rises slightly in the Winter. But EDF quote was £118/month for electricity alone.

My ev tariff is actually costs us 2.99 per kwh. Just noticed lol 😆 So it cost me £1.50 to drive 200 miles 😮-

where do you see £7?
I find Octopus has gone expensive and I plan switching before July price cap increases more.

I went on to the EDF Website, put in my details, selected EV options and that is what it said. £7 for charging an ev at night. I dont know if that is every night or only when you charge.
When I saw the monthly cost £118, for electricity only, it was extreme, so shut the webpage down. I never got to the gas estimate…lol
