Phoned motability this morning to see if they would offer an extension on the lease (up in mid january) on my partners car which has done a total 0f 4600.
Nothing at all – the car has to go back. Explained that we would have difficulty sourcing a new car as she has an impending operation and couldnt get to a garage.
But we could rejoin the scheme when she is better. %th car on the scheme and our last……We’re out…..

3 month before the end of the lease they should have contacted you and asked your intentions, they seemed to have gone hardball.

December 1, 2025 at 4:50 pm #318745I am leaving after this lease too partly because of the decision not to extend or buy but mostly because I think its been done in e very underhand way. I am not prepared to pay monthly for a car where they pic and choose what rules apply when. It’s my first lease…. and last! Salary sacrifice is ahead for me instead. zero deposit and competitive monthly payers with a tax incentive. The UKG loose out from tax revenue but thats their consequential impact of poor policy decisions.

I can see quite a few leaving, including me!
December 1, 2025 at 7:09 pm #318759If there is a mass exodus surely this will have an effect on Mobility business model and buying power.

December 1, 2025 at 8:11 pm #318763@jd68 you could try and ring up grants team they would probably allow a 2 year extension
December 2, 2025 at 1:50 pm #318782I have lost trust in Motability. I paid for me, a high advance payment sure in the knowledge that provided I kept under a certain milage I would be able to extend the lease for a further 2 years. This has now been removed. No consultation. No warning. No it starts for new contracts from a certain date.
It seems it’s open season on the disabled. The one thing motability should have done, stand up for disabled rights. Well in my view they have rolled over and are awaiting for the next requirements from the government.
Max advance payments reduced probably, this reducing choice even more.
It may not be the end for motability. But it’s the end of the motability we all once knew.
December 2, 2025 at 2:45 pm #318788I’m puzzled as to why the grants team would allow an extension when the people I spoke to wouldnt ?
We’ve had 5 motability cars – all have been returned in excellent condition. I merely wanted an extension on the lease to cover the time when my partner recuperates from an op as she cant get out.
Obviously I am not going go to the hassle of buying another car and then returning to the scheme in a few months when she feels able to get out and about.
I mean its completely ridiculous.
December 2, 2025 at 3:56 pm #318825Not sure what we will do, we can easily buy a car outright, new or used (prob 1-2 yrs old, same as we used to before Motability came along) will see what the scheme looks like in 2 years time. Hell, at this rate, average AP will be £10k, except for the Dacia Spring. Wife’s salary sacrifice is Tusker – not cheap, they are a rip off, so that’s unlikely.
It will be interesting to see how they “promote” British built – artificially high AP’s on everything else I expect.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
December 2, 2025 at 4:38 pm #318826The car industry needs Mobility it is their biggest customer (economies of scale) for both new and the supply of used vehicles, For too long we have been overcharged for vehicle, since the arrival of all these Chinese state subsidised vehicles, all of a sudden western manufactures have matched or lowered the prices.
I have recently have been looking around new registered Kia EV6 less that £36,000, Tesla prices dropping, I have even seen Kia EV3 GT Line 81.4kWh 583 miles £29,000.
I believe the market will level out in the next 6/12 months they are in the business to sell car or fold.

December 2, 2025 at 4:52 pm #318827If Motability don’t do something with their EV APs then I’m priced out of the scheme. As I said elsewhere on here I can get a used but higher spec Mach E for just over double the AP for the standard one on the scheme. I’d much rather know someone is there to keep the car or me on the road if something goes wrong but I’m not going to throw money we don’t have away just to have that security.

December 2, 2025 at 8:33 pm #318836It makes perfect sense for Motability to halt ALL extensions in 2026.
Vehicles bought in 2026 will be returned in 2029, and giving a bit leeway for new orders, and a waiting list, the extra 12 months to 2030.
In 2029 when 2026 vehicles are returned, there will be very few new ICE cars available. A flood of low mileage ex motability cars will go for a premium.
People when supply drops for ICE vehicles, prices will rise.
Its just a purely commercial decision, motability are running at a loss the last year or so and need the cash. With over 700K customers, a few leaving the scene wont make much difference.
Its the UK, lots of grumbling, but nothing woll be happen.
December 2, 2025 at 10:00 pm #318838Wishful thinking, with the way the government are going about it, they won’t meet 2030. Every time Reeves opens her mouth, it becomes more and more plausable the date will be pushed back to its original date inline with the EU.

There’s no chance they’ll make 2030. Even the most conservative estimates show that new EV sales will be hit in the tens of thousands after the 3ppm increase. It doesn’t take much research to know I’m not exactly anti-EV, in fact much the opposite where it’s practicable, but this decision has clearly put spending on non environmental issues above the motoring transition and that will, I’m sure be shown to be both short-sighted and unsuccessful. The first draw back is that with a reduction in new sales and EV drivers thinking more seriously about their driving habits (after all, it is quite simple to have a short trip out when you’re charging at home for pennies) I simply can’t see the revenue being anywhere near estimates, again like the Motability ‘Savings’ where people will simply change their spending.

December 3, 2025 at 9:42 am #318842I feel for everyone who now feel trapped between a rock and a hard place with these Political shifting sands. The Mobility car scheme used to have something for everyone, wide selection and affordable AP’s plus being able to spread the cost over 5 yrs with the extensions. Running a well made car with essential specs (heated comfortable seats, parking sensors, collision warning system, and enough space.) This is looking like being my last car on Mobility, back to buying an car of choice on Petrol come renewal.
The UN agenda 2030 is active, ‘you will own nothing but will be happy.’
The UK is signed up to it.

Motability Operations (who provide the cars) are a separate entity from Motability the charity who provide grants towards the AP of a new car.
I spoke to the grants team a few weeks ago and if your current vehicle is fine for you then their preferred option is to extend the lease rather than give you money towards the payment of another vehicle. They said it’s absolutely not a problem to extend the lease if you want to and they will push it through with Motability Operations.December 3, 2025 at 2:36 pm #318851Thats interesting – I’ll give them a call.
December 3, 2025 at 2:47 pm #318852I can imagine lots of people will suddenly need a grant for the AP. 🤔
