Not exactly straightforward is it? Does it mean that for the first 3,000 miles over the 10,000 mile allowance you can’t get any support?
July 8, 2026 at 1:31 pm #372428I think it says that for the first 5000 miles you pay 10p per mile and then anything above that is free? Its really confusing me!

From first glance, the 3000 miles is included within your annual 10k miles (so within your annual 10k it is 7000 ‘leisure’ miles and 3000 work/school/hospital etc miles).
Then the next 5000 work/hospital/school miles per year is 10p per mile.
Then the next 5000 work/hospital/school etc miles after that per year are free.
Then from there on it is 25p per mile for any miles over 20k per year.
But you do have to apply in advance for these work/school/hospital etc miles for these rates to apply or else presumably all excess mileage is 25p per mile.
July 8, 2026 at 1:42 pm #372431In essence because you work, you have been taxed twice now: the usual HMRC plus £1,500 for the duration of your lease by Motability.

Albeit I cannot see this mentioned anywhere.
However £1500 in excess mileage charges at lease end plus an AP for the next vehicle maybe a leap too far for some.
July 8, 2026 at 2:19 pm #372435Will be interesting as to what they do about collecting excess mileage fees from people that can’t afford to pay them.
At least going private I know exactly what I will be paying as I can fix the lease to the mileage I require.
July 8, 2026 at 2:58 pm #372438How does this work with our son who is autistic. Over the time we have been on the scheme we cover about 20k miles each year, this has nothing to do with work/hospital etc. but due to his condition. He will not stay in and we have to drive him out and about to visit the shops and places to keep him visual simulated. Once this has been done he is happy and contented Otherwise what do we do with him. Keep him locked in. The scheme has been good to us and I fear for him and us when the contract ends in 2028. Let’s hope they see sense. And change this.
July 8, 2026 at 3:04 pm #372439Completely confused…I do 6200 miles a year just for work…. What does this actually mean in real terms…. Maybe just me but no idea what’s going on now
July 8, 2026 at 3:05 pm #372440Go find another lease where you don’t get charged for excess mileage, those with company cars also get charged for excess kileag3.
You can’t have it both ways, either y8u want to be treated lije anyone else, 8r you want to be treated “special’ as if you are better than those who work and can’t afford to lease a new car every three years.
You moaning will push the government to make p8p jeans tested
July 8, 2026 at 3:26 pm #372441I’m not moaning in just asking for clarification as I do work and I do over 6kn just for work I can’t get a bus when if I could they’re so infrequent or don’t run at all …we all know you get excess milage charge but not at what motability have set it at
July 8, 2026 at 3:38 pm #372443Clear as mud that is …jeez.
Essentially, 10k-20k miles you pay extra 5p per mile. Which is good, as that is well below the private sector
20k miles+ is the sting. At 25p/mile, it is brutal.
For those that do in excess of 10k miles, you will have to do your sums and see if it is cheaper to leave the scheme, and move elsewhere. If you dont like to move, its going to hit your pocket….hard.
But yes, if 25% of members indeed do a lot of miles, its going to get expensive. It will not be so bad if you are employed, you could cover the increased cost. But for those with no income, it is going to be really difficult.

July 8, 2026 at 3:50 pm #372446Indeed
July 8, 2026 at 3:53 pm #372447This is excellent news because disabled people definitely don’t have enough form filling, document providing and evidence supplying in their lives already.
One good thing is, that at least it’s very clear cut. If you were using the scheme for the purpose of making motoring one less thing to worry about (which the scheme has done brilliantly for years) then this should definitely telegraph that the scheme is no longer fit for purpose. For in the last few months, it has gone from magnificent simplicity to hopelessly trying to explain things through the most complicated infographic I’ve ever seen. Tremendously sad.July 8, 2026 at 3:55 pm #372449I don’t mind paying for the excess mileage we do, but why 25p, I don’t know of any leasing company that charges that amount,
the formula they have come up with for this just adds to the confusion
July 8, 2026 at 4:08 pm #372451Completely confused…I do 6200 miles a year just for work…. What does this actually mean in real terms…. Maybe just me but no idea what’s going on now
Well, going by their formula, and assuming you use your 7000 miles per year on, for want of a better term ‘ social domestic & pleasure’ journeys, you get 3000 miles for work free and then 3200 at 10p per mile which is 3200 x £0.10 = £320 per annum in excess mileage charges.
However, doesn’t your employer pay for your business mileage (excluding commuting)? Or if self employed claim it back via tax as a justifiable expense?
July 8, 2026 at 4:21 pm #372452If you are only doing 6200 miles per year, you have nothing to worry about.
Its only when you breach 10k miles/year that complicates stuff.
Even then its 10p mile up to 15k. The jump from 15k to 20k is free….allegedly
But that adds 500 per year if you do 20k per year.

Depends on the deal in private sector, I think: we only pay 3.9p per extra mile for a car we took in March this year.

July 8, 2026 at 4:57 pm #372456I understand life more than that announcement !
July 8, 2026 at 5:16 pm #372457With the help of Gemini AI, I put a scenario of someone travelling 16000 miles a year- higher than the 10,000 limit because of work.
Here is the response which is clear but detailed
Under the new Motability rules, the standard annual mileage allowance has dropped to 10,000 miles per year. Since you cover 16,000 miles, you are looking at an overage of 6,000 miles. Without support, the new excess charge is 25p per mile, which would cost you £1,500 a year.
However, because you use your car for work (employment), you can apply for their Additional Mileage Support.
Here is how their calculation works for a work-based application:
1. The 3,000-Mile Threshold
Motability assumes your standard 10,000-mile allowance should cover everyday life plus your first 3,000 miles of work travel. Because of this, support only kicks in for work-related miles above 3,000 miles per year.2. How the Discount Scales
If your case is approved, they look strictly at your total work miles and reduce the excess rate for those miles using a two-tier system:The First 5,000 Extra Work Miles (3,001 to 8,000 miles): The excess charge drops from 25p down to 10p per mile.
Anything Beyond That (8,001+ work miles): The excess charge drops to 0p per mile.
What this means for your 16,000 miles
Your exact savings depend entirely on how much of your 16,000 miles is purely for work. For example, if 8,000 miles of your total are for commuting or work business:
The first 3,000 work miles are covered under your standard allowance.
The remaining 5,000 work miles qualify for the discounted 10p rate instead of 25p.
The rest of your personal miles that spill over the 10,000 cap still cost 25p.
If your work mileage is even higher—say 12,000 miles of your total:3,000 miles count as standard.
5,000 miles are charged at the 10p rate. (£500 in total)
The final 4,000 work miles trigger the 0p rate (entirely free excess miles).2024 Skoda Enyaq estate- 85x Sportline plus in Race Blue. Extras: Supernova 21 inch wheels, Maxx Pack, Transport Pack, Heat Pump and Pano Sunroof.

Indeed. However, if anyone does go down that route they need to be careful as some tools like the OBDSTAR X300M cannot always access some of the modules. In some BMWs, the millage is held across several modules. What will be popular are the Mileage Blockers.
July 8, 2026 at 9:21 pm #372473And now is the real question: how to prove you do work from the office 5 days a week?
Is Motability going to ask the employers to produce a letter? How self-employed person, who works with a company for years is going to prove?
It’s another nonsense.
