Transport for London (TfL) will discontinue the Cleaner Vehicle Discount (CVD), which currently grants a 100% discount on the Congestion Charge to EV’s and Hydrogen vehicles from January next year.

From 2 January 2026, the standard Congestion Charge will increase to £18 per day. Electric cars will receive a 25% discount, reducing their daily charge to £13.50, while electric vans, HGVs and quadricycles will benefit from a 50% discount, paying £9 daily. However, these discounts will only apply to vehicles registered on TfL’s Auto Pay system.

Residents living within the charging zone who already have the Residents’ Discount before 1 March 2027 will maintain their 90% discount regardless of vehicle type. However, new applicants after this date will only qualify for the discount if they drive an electric vehicle.

Low-income and disabled residents can continue applying for the discount irrespective of their vehicle type, though this exemption will only last until March 2030.

Businesses have expressed serious concerns about the additional costs. The Electric London Coalition, representing companies including AA, Openreach and Royal Mail, estimates that professional drivers entering London five days a week could face extra costs of up to £3,000 annually.

      Yet another blow!

And 20% VAT on taxis, hopefully she will leave my class 3 mobility scooter alone.

It’s the sort of thing that starts in London and works it way out. A sign of the times, I’m afraid.

Also homeowners are likely to lose their right to subsidies for eco-friendly heat pumps as a result of government plans to bring down energy bills at the budget.

Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, is planning to announce a series of measures to bring down energy bills amid concerns the country’s stubbornly high cost of living is driving millions of voters to Reform UK.

Among those measures, according to sources briefed on the budget preparations, is a plan to take energy efficiency levies off bills and fund them through the government’s existing warm homes plan.

The move will mean restricting heat-pump subsidies so that only those receiving certain benefits will be allowed to claim them, sharply bringing down costs to the government.

Disabled drivers with a blue badge are automatically exempt from congestion charge if their vehicle is registered as disabled class by DVLA.
In addition, any blue badge holder can open a Congestion Charge account with TFL that will allow them to have 2 additional vehicles congestion charge free , petrol, diesel or EV.
Nothing will change for a Disability driver of an EV after the imposition of the charge.

So in other words, the charge has nothing to do with clean air and is just what we all thought all along.
