Second point first.  The current duty is collected as a hidden cost in every litre of Dino juice bought.  You’ve an inefficient car you drive lots in, you pay more.  The EV duty is much more visible but still counts as potentially less per mile than the duty on petrol.

As for the government watching us, that horse bolted years ago, just look at all the cameras pointing at our roads and it’ll be a challenge to go anywhere beyond a few miles.  Then there’s the info gathered by your car manufacturer, phone provider, phone manufacturer, travel app company, route planner and those other apps you clicked ‘allow all’ for permissions.

Fuel duty costs 52.95p per litre excluding VAT & actual fuel costs. A hybrid will travel an average of 11 miles  with a litre of fuel.

The pay per mile duty for an EV, to cover the same 11 miles would cost 33p. 19.95p excluding VAT cheaper.

Is it fair EV drivers should pay per mile, probably not. Is it expected almost certainly, because like anything the government does will include an element of carrot dangling initially.

The problem is that as an EV vehicle they can also stop you remotely from driving. And it is not a conspiracy – enough to read the leaks from upcoming Green Party’s conference this autumn.

That’s all very well… until the government agency that will be set up at some future point meticulously goes through your digital driving record – and issues speeding fines for all those speed limits that you broke.

Sound far fetched? You have more faith than me if so!

To be fair, they could probably do that for the vast majority of us now.  The self righteous would simply say don’t break the speed limits but we all know that’s not realistic either.

It’ll be interesting to see just how far things go and how quickly.

This seems to still be self reporting and payment over 3 years alongside VED if you opt out of vehicle tracking.  That, to me, suggests you have to give permission to be tracked and for that tracking to be used in that manner.  If you do so you can pay for your mileage based on your declaration and it gets checked at the MOT with either a bill or refund if you’ve not payed accurately.

I’d still like to see how you’re supposed to pay.  If you get to your Motability usage limit, that’s a £300 annual charge, would there be a monthly payment option? Could we elect to deliberately overpay and then take a refund towards the end of each lease?

Simple don’t speed, they are there for a reason.

My partner has just come back from a trip to Edinburgh and speeding north of the border seems to be tolerated. She was tailgated by cars and lorries on 60mph roads and thriough20mph villages. She noticed a complete change as she came south again. I’m guessing enforcement is not a priority but should the above monitoring come in then who knows how that may change. If you break the speed limit it is a choice you make. Modern cars tell you what the limit is 90% of the time. There may come a time whe speeding is automatically limited.

Would it not be simpler if the added £300 to EV and £150 to PHEV road tax, there will always be winners and losers.

A6nother interesting part of the proposal is to charge for overseas mileage, shows it’s just a mony grabbing exercise

EV owners taxed for driving abroad under pay-per-mile plan

Govt are saying 3p oer mile for evs, so 30,000 miles rs £900

Hybrids 1,5p on top of fuel costs

I am a bit confused with premises of this discussion: we don’t pay road taxes either via Motability or when owing our first car. Where does it say disabled motorists will have to pay 3p if they drive EV?

Really Illegals?  If it’s not us taking too much money it’s the millions of illegals and their boats.

The 3ppm replaces losses in fuel duty.  Disabled people aren’t entitled to a deduction in fuel prices, so when the inevitable charge for EV duties comes we have to pay that too.

Oh, and here is the fact from tge government

No, disabled drivers are not exempt from the new EV pay-per-mile tax (eVED). While you may continue to be exempt from standard annual Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) due to benefits like PIP or DLA, you will still be required to pay the upcoming per-mile rate when it comes into force. [1, 2]

                                And

The government maintains that disabled drivers should not be exempt from the new mileage charge because this tax replaces the fuel duty that petrol and diesel drivers currently pay, which is not subject to a disability exemption. [1, 2]

Quite happy to pay the 3p @ mile, I would imagine it will be brought in line with fossil fuel duty and raised to 6p @ mile

I am still confused- we already pay taxes on the electricity we consume to charge the vehicle.  Especially in public domains.  I am sure someone will take it to the court to decide.

Basically it’s an ev tax as the govetnment wasn’t getting much money in as to when cars were all ice cars and their tax in the fuel.

The excuse i think, is evs cause more damage to the roads than ice xwrs, but those of us with large suvs pay extra tax for them already in road hubs licence and extea fuel duty.

The big point is they don’t try to hide the fact it’s another tax, by charging for milestone outside the country.

It won’t stay a 3p per mile, it will rise each budget and im waiting for them to try to nake ice cars financially unviable

How do I know, I was hospitalised at 3 mths old, and placed in an oxygen tent in 1974.

The x-ray from my lungs showed a shadow on one of my lung lobes.

Also, my ASC wasn’t caused or triggered by vaccinations, as my mum never let me have them. After a mess one of the doctors made on my late older brother. My mum BTW is a retired paediatric ICU nurse. I’ve never caught any of the big bugs from not having the vaccinations.

I have ASD and thus have difficulty with social and understanding information, written and verbal. I process information in logical blocks, before I reply. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong.
I also have a corneal visual condition, which makes me visually impaired without daytime, or daytime bulbs, among other disabilities/conditions.

It doesnt really matter who pays what, the Govt has to tax people to keep the country afloat. But it us always, the more cash you have, the more you pay tax. Arguing about who pays what, is a waste of time. If you get upset about it, you are only shooting yourself in the foot.

Your basic premise is wrong and may I swy, based on a leftist view of the world. Whilst there has to be sone taxation, to cover tge basic things, this and previous government taxed to waste billions on their pet projecs which the people should hot pay for. Taxation should be the minimum to allowibdividuals to spend their money as they see fit.

I do take issue with your depiction of a lefty or leftist you are incorrect.

Looking at the evidence from what you write on this forum, we can tell you are a bitter, and nasty old man.

If you want a decent society, you pay your taxes. Most of us dont like it, but the alternative is anarchy.
