The European Union is set to delay its deadline for the roll-out of electric vehicles until 2040. This decision has been influenced by pressure from various countries, including Germany, to avoid a full ban on combustion engines. The EU’s plan aims to reduce emissions by 90 by 2035 and fully decarbonize cars by 2040, without forcing a switch to any specific technology.  Tim Tozer, UK chairman of Allianz Partners and former boss of several major car brands, told the Sunday Times he has “good authority” that the EU will confirm the 2040 date. That would mean petrol and diesel cars could stay on sale in Europe for ten years longer than in the UK, raising questions about whether British drivers and manufacturers are being put at a disadvantage.

Given Germany is home to so many manufacturers, it’s hardly a shock that they’re being lobbied and are passing on that lobbying to extend sales of conventional piston engined cars.

Then given that the government have very successfully muddied the message, I can’t see them being able to be ready for 2030.  In fact, 2040 may be optimistic given the probable next government are still labelling them as “Stupid Green Policies”, I’d very much doubt they’d be pushing very hard.

Must say I’m surprised not that its been pushed back further, but the fact they have done it 10 years early!

Given most of the cars imported into the UK come from the EU, it leave Labour little little room, but to push back from 2030. Of course Labour would have been aware of what the EU were planning and could have been some reasoning behind the budget, but its been pretty obvios for a while I think, the need to push back. Needless to say, I expect Labour to carry on regardless, as an act of stubbornness till close to 2030 before making any announcement. Whether manufacturers here will start to push back earlier or even leave is yet to be seen. One thing for granted is, Labour will milk it till the very end!
