The next-generation Vauxhall Corsa will be available as a pure electric car, as part of a move by Vauxhall to offer an ‘electrified’ (either purely electric or plug-in hybrid) version of every model in its line-up by 2024.

A fully electric Corsa supermini, a plug-in hybrid Grandland X SUV (below) and two more models will arrive in 2020, with the complete rollout of electrification across the Vauxhall brand complete by 2024.

The electrification drive is part of the ‘PACE!’ plan – a strategic plan initiated when Vauxhall and its German sister brand Opel became part of the French PSA Group, which also owns Citroen, Peugeot and DS.

The new Corsa will be built in Opel’s factory in Zaragoza, Spain, and share mechanical underpinnings with the forthcoming next-generation Peugeot 208, Citroen C4 and DS 3 Crossback (which will all be offered in pure-electric form).”This offensive will strongly contribute to meeting the strict CO2 limits set by the EU,” said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. He also added: “Charging infrastructure is a key enabler for the development of electrification. Therefore, Opel will contribute to a charging infrastructure project at the company’s headquarters together with partners such as the city of Rüsselsheim.”

Other elements of the PACE! plan include Vauxhall and Opel cutting their fixed costs by 28% since the beginning of 2018, a streamlining of senior management, avoiding plant closures, sharing more technology across the whole PSA Group, and Opel’s Russelsheim engineering centre becoming a core part of the PSA Group’s research and development network.

Vauxhall and Opel are also increasing their focus on the light commercial vehicle sector with the recently launched new Combo and upcoming new Vivaro vans.
