my milage has plummeted since redundancy and with the new prices i am considering an electric countryman as the ap is zero and the range is 280 realistically 225? but ive only been out 10 times in dec and done about 150 miles. so the cars sat parked for most of the time. will an electric car lose much chrge parked for an extended time?

      thanks

Normally, no.  In extreme cold the battery will be used to keep itself warm and some cars have timers set for the morning commute, which preconditions both battery and car.  In either case the battery will drain.  Normally, though, there’s no worry about losing anything worthy of note.

Once you’re all setup, it might be worth keeping it plugged in one night a week, set max charge to 80% and you can be confident that you’ll not be in need of an emergency charge just because you forgot to plug in after the last trip.

            ok thats good.

as i cant charge at home even with a granny lead, parking is  20m from bungalow and council wont put in a drive dropped kerb etc as the grass in front of the bungalow has more rights than me lol.

at the moment i am lucky to do 200 miles a month so will only need to charge once a month unless i go off on a trip. so an hour or two at a decent charger once a month isnt going to be arduous or any more expensive than the petrol i was using before redundancy. i appreciate it will be more expensive than petrol for my current mileage if you see what i mean. so i am going to consider the electric countryman in my list.

No, mine was sitting at Volvo for virtually a month waiting for a part and lost hardly any charge.

The other thing to consider is that it’s not recommended to leave it sitting fully charged or with a very low battery. It depends on the actual EV as well as to what they recommend to charge it to for daily driving.

Also, have a look at ev.database.org/uk for real-world ranges.

Just my opinion if you are doing 200 miles per month you would be better off higher vehicle.

dobbies chesterfield now has 150kw chargers at 55p.

so they would be my go to local charger and it looks like you can subscribe and get it as low as 39p not sure yet of the conditions for that.

basically it would be easy to charge whilst mooching around cotton traders and the garden centre. at least it would get me out once a month lol.

the countrmans are 150kw 66kwh. max range 280claimed.

EV Database has the Countryman ranges as below.  It’s worth noting their winter is -10 degrees and their mild has no air con on at 23 degrees outside.   From that and with your mileage I’d be expecting 200-230 winter and 270-300 summer unless you’re doing short trips along country roads driving like you stole it.

Real Range Estimation between 170 – 350 mi
                    City – Cold Weather *                         230 mi
                    Highway – Cold Weather *                170 mi
                    Combined – Cold Weather *             200 mi
                    City – Mild Weather *                         350 mi
                    Highway – Mild Weather *                215 mi
                    Combined – Mild Weather *             270 mi

thanks mark i could live with that it would be a once a month thing at most to start with until i can sort out something to get me out of the house lol.

                        @Mitch
, we’ve holidayed in Barlow (two great foody pubs!) for the last two years. In 2024 the best value was at the football ground in Chesterfield, but in 2025, I found new chargers at Arnold Clark. These are also 53p or 55p , but Dobbies sounds as good if not better. At Arnold Clark in September, I was the only car ever charging but this might have been down to the fact that someone had chopped off the cables of 10 of them!
