Just wondering how much data usage is needed for the drive smart. From what I know I need to use an app on my phone to connect to the device when I receive it. How is it powered? The 12V is currently used for the dashcam.
Thanks for the replies

The other option of course is to tell Motability that you are unable to use a smartphone or it is not possible for you to use a smartphone.
As per their webpage, Motability will then fit a device to your car that does not require a smartphone/app.

https://www.motability.co.uk/get-support/during-your-lease/cars-wavs/drive-smart?open=11
It then narrows their tracking capability down to the vehicle only and not the user’s smartphone.
Also, it transfers both the cost of the device and any running costs to Motability.
If enough customers do this, Motability may not be so ‘trigger happy’ to be imposing the cost of a smartphone and airtime etc onto its customers.
March 11, 2026 at 6:46 am #344006Still on topic if not completely. Does this news mean that Drive Smart is being introduced for all new members to the scheme regardless of age? Its a confusing article because the first section seems to indicate this, but then it goes on to talk about under 30s
March 11, 2026 at 6:55 am #344007Yes, it is being imposed on all ‘new to scheme customer’ contracts from 13th April 2026 regardless of driver ages (and many hereabouts believe/suspect it will be imposed on all customer contracts later)!
See post #343963 in the following thread:
or the latest post on the Motability Scheme fb page.
March 11, 2026 at 9:18 am #344082One of my kids has the box in her car. The insurance is with Admiral and she said that her friends, who opted for mobile apps with other insurers, get instant notification for any attempt to have a bit of fun within the permitted limits like acceleration from 0 to 30 miles.
She doesn’t get any of those. It only seem to monitor if she drives after 22:00 and within the permitted speed limits.
Sent from a mobile device.
