Was looking into getting one,im just curious why all motorbility cars on pick up, dont have them installed already, win win for all involved,us,dealers insurance company and so on.

I know motorbility dont like them wired into the car(why though baffles me).

Cant stand wires hanging here there everywhere, guess its my OCD .

Whilst Motability don’t allow hard wiring into the car (wires into the electrical harness), plug-in wires can usually be tucked away into the trim without causing any issues or damage. Also consider the removable hooks such as ‘Command, damage free hooks’ for areas where the wires cannot be tucked away. These can be removed from any surface without causing any damage when time to return the car.
        Hope this helps.

? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

The question of dash cam fitting comes up a lot on this forum and elsewhere and I think the answer to hard wiring comes down to the fire risk and possibility of invalidating the manufacturers guarantee so it’s OK for the dealer to hard wire it but not us.

You know how it works, your gearbox falls out of the bottom of the car and the manufacture says you hard wire a dash cam so cannot accept any responsibility for the gearbox falling out of the car.

Extreme I know but any excuse will do.

With my current car I’ve gone the way that Wayne suggested, not that I can do it myself because of my disability but my grandson is a dab hand at removing and refitting interior trim while the wire makes its way to the centre console where my 12v accessory socket is he was able to tuck the wire behind the roof lining, easy to do on most cars, then route over the passenger side foot well. Then he removed the cowl of the centre console, pulled the wire through and into the 12v socket.

Removing and refitting the centre console needs a bit of thought as you don’t want to cause any damage to it but lucky for me the part on my console only required a tiny bit in front of the gear shift where there’s a slide away hatch that hides the 2×12v sockets plus inputs to the infotainment centre so closing the hatch and everything is out of sight.

All back together and not a wire in sight except that is the rear facing camera but that’s sort of out of sight anyway, I’ve not got eye’s in the back of my head ,? and this connection was as simple as sticking the camera on the rear glass and plugging it into the 12v socket there in the boot.

Hi. I never knew about hard wiring a dash cam on a motability car! I’ve had mine for nearly 2 years now!! I bought it from Halfords  and had it put in by Halfords. I’ve never had any problems at all. It is connected to the fuse box as they find a spare section. And all done by checking on the Ford website.
im just about to change my car so will get Halfords to remove and re install. Maybe I should ring Motability then. What an absolute nightmare!!

i wouldn’t mind, but I want to get a reversing camera installed too as having it come with the vehicle, I’d gave to wait 6 months!! Decisions decisions

              Hi Julie

It’s nothing to much to worry about to be honest and I can’t imagine anyone getting pulled up and smacked on the back of the hand for it and if you get Halfords to take it out before hand-back no one is the wiser.

I put my car in for its first service last week and while driving home I noticed the mechanic had pulled the power supply out of my dashcam and I wouldn’t be too pleased had something happened on my way home before realizing it needed reconnecting. They don’t like the ideal of being spied upon which is fair enough but they could have remembered to reconnect it before handing it back.

Just another thing about dash cams is about 2 month after getting my current car someone went into the back of me smashing the bumper in mean the car was off the road for a couple of weeks and guess what RSA asked me first thing on notifying them “don’t suppose you got any dash cam footage” and as it happened I didn’t because at the time I had not got around to refitting the cameras from my previous car but goes to show the insurance people like you to have them.

Most come with a “piggy back” fuse adapter these days so not hard wired but can still have in parking mode if required and removes in seconds.

Hmmm I handed my Ford Kuga back in March complete with a hardwired dashcam that was fitted by Halfords a week after I collected the car.

3 days after handing it back I recieved full Good Condition Bonus the only mention of the Dashcam was by the Toyota dealer who asked me If I wanted them to remove it for me and then fit it into my new C-HR Hybrid I said no as the new car was already booked into Halfords to have a brand new one fitted the next day…….

This question seems to come up fairly frequently.

When my wife started her lease we enquired about a Dashcam from both Motability and the Toyota dealer we were getting the car from. We wanted the hard wired, dealer fitted Toyota DashCam.
Motability’s attitude on the phone was ‘we don’t care’; the Toyota dealer checked with Motability – at our insistence – and got the same response.
It seems to be a non-issue as far as our experience goes.

As for why cars aren’t fitted with Dashcams as standard – they are illegal in some European countries (and UK drivers with them should be aware of the rules if going on holiday).
For example : they’re completely outlawed in Austria, Luxembourg & Portugal; Effectively banned in Switzerland (with very complex laws); You cannot upload Dashcam video to the internet if it’s in France or Germany, plus you need to inform all the involved parties if you are using footage in an insurance claim.
So – manufacturers seem to play it safe, by leaving it up to the user to install & use at their own risk.

From the dealer ffitted one’s that I’ve researched they can all be deactivated on the in car systems for just that reason and when speaking with a couple of manufacturers the extra cost is minimal if fitted during build.

Good post Mike, I keep my dashcam running while touring Europe but only so I can record the scenery. Didn’t make any difference the last time I drove the St. Bernards pass due to the cloud cover, I couldn’t even see the front of my car on the recorded footage.

Manufacturer fits are not an issue it’s after market fits Motability have an issue with, the same as Chips or Remaps, nothing is allowed that may forfeit warranty, this is not to say you can’t have a dashcam just plug it into the socket and stick it on the dash, having it hard wired by a third party is an issue and may seem petty but why should the manufacturers pay or the insurance company because the workmanship has caused a fault or even an accident.
