I appreciate I’m not supposed to have a ‘hard’ wired dash cam fitted after having taken delivery of the car. Anyone know if it would it be OK to have one ‘hard’ wired if I go back to the dealership who supplied the car?
Don’t really like the idea of dash cam cables hanging around the windscreen.

You can buy a cable that plugs into the port that will power a dashcam. It can then be run up to the camera behind the pillar and head cloth to hide the wire. As it is plugged into the OBD it is not hard wired. One on eBay as an example.
December 23, 2025 at 12:39 pm #324741I still don’t get or agree with Motability’s argument that you can’t have a hard wired dash cam installed. I had an incident in my current lease, where an aggressor gained access to my car, and motability let me install a hard wired dashcam……..Strange

Thanks for the reply but I did mention “I appreciate I’m not supposed to have a ‘hard’ wired dash cam fitted after having taken delivery of the car.”

Fisherman's Friends, Glastonbury 2024December 23, 2025 at 4:26 pm #324763Be careful where you run the wires, as some ‘may’ interfere with any airbag deployment.
Not saying that it would, but you can never 100% rule out.I have ASD and thus have difficulty with social and understanding information, written and verbal. I process information in logical blocks, before I reply. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong.
I also have a corneal visual condition, which makes me visually impaired without daytime, or daytime bulbs, among other disabilities/conditions.December 23, 2025 at 6:19 pm #324767I appreciate I’m not supposed to have a ‘hard’ wired dash cam fitted after having taken delivery of the car. My understanding of the Motability rule is to ensure that the car car electronics are not interfered with by improper wiring leading to warranty issues. Whilst most will use a professional installer, many people install themselves so I think it’s easier to have a blanket after market ban.
I would imagine that if they permit the supply and installation of one by the dealer pre installation, there would be a good chance they would permit it retro fitted under same terms.
Like everything, only way to be sure is contact Motability.December 23, 2025 at 11:19 pm #324773I had my BMW EYE 3 front and rear dash cam installed by dealership before collection, so it’s all cosher.

Previous car:Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.December 24, 2025 at 11:16 am #324784OBD 11 standard for 12V is
Pin 16 battery +
Pin 4 chasis ground (Pin 5 signal ground).
There is no OBD 11 standard for ignition live, although some manufacturers support this. However, there are OBD 11 microcontrollers available, that operate at 5V 3A / 12V 3A and have ACC and Surveillance modes, such as that seen in the example link below. It is important to research and buy a reputale device, rather than the cheapest available!

If going down the route of a basic 12v OBD11 power adapter, its imprtant the output lead is protected by a cartridge fuse, as OBD pin 16 battery + is often not fused and even if it was, it would be rated at far higher Amps than that of your dashcam.
December 24, 2025 at 11:31 am #324785December 24, 2025 at 12:17 pm #324791As a bit of an ‘update’, the installer said fitting the dash cam the OBD way was fine and said he could do it that way. But just to check with Motability first.
Is there any way I can contact Motability by email at all? I can only find contact details for getting in touch by phone. Again, any help would be much appreciated.

Fisherman's Friends, Glastonbury 2024December 24, 2025 at 1:10 pm #324794“How dashcams work on the Scheme
If you’re on the Motability Scheme and you’re considering fitting a dashcam to your Scheme vehicle, you can, if you meet a few conditions. Here’s what you need to know:
It must be a plug-in and not hard-wired into your vehicle
It needs to be attached in a way that does not cause damage to your vehicle. For example, not permanently attached to the dashboard
Any costs must be covered by you, including buying the dashcam and fitting or removal costs
You can fit your dashcam yourself, or your dealer can do it for you. Before you install your new device, talk to your dealer, or speak to us if you’re not sure. ”https://news.motability.co.uk/motoring/dashcams-explained/
In my view, you have met the terms outlined by Motability, in that its power source would be from a plug in adapter, similar to that of a USB and 12V aux plug adapter and not permanently hard wired to the vehicle.
Most at Motability wont have clue and merely customer service reps, what they input on the computer will simply return no, as it is too defined however, simply by generalising the question by connecting using any 12v socket as long as its not hard wired to the vehicle, will undoubtedly return a yes!

I agree with everything you’ve said. An OBD connection will be a ‘plug’ in method as they’ve stated.
